Yup this confirms my instincts to only buy canned artichokes. Love em but that’s just too much work for me.

Canned artichokes can't even compare to a fresh steamed one drenched in garlic butter

Why waste the stem? Peeling the outside and steam or however you’re cooking it, results in lots more of the flavorful heart

A lot of people find the stem to be woody and/or fibrous, especially in older/larger artichoke. I also enjoy eating the stem just as you said, but some people just don't like it.

On the steamed version you should dip the petals in melted butter before eating

It's great to see you prepare, steam and eat the whole artichoke. In my Italian family that's the basic way we always eat them, perhaps with a little olive oil or butter and garlic. Using the same method we also stuff them. Nothing is more annoying to me than when I see so-called chefs tear away all the leaves from an artichoke and throw them away and just use the inner leaves and hearts.

I can remember Maymie (my older relative and Mom stand-in) seeing me preparing an artichoke for the first time. Somehow I'd gotten two fingers down in the center...and felt..*hair*. As in some creature's genitalia. It was just the right temperature, and she was there, and I had "this strange look on your face". "It's got...hair!" I said. She laughed and nodded. Puberty. It's a beautiful thing.

Artichoke hearts can be bought canned or jarred. They taste great on salads.

Excellent primer on artichokes. I can't think of any detail or tip that you missed, except maybe to rub them with lemon right after being cut or soaking in acidulated water. But really a fine job!!

Love artichokes, but I will always buy the pre-prepared version because they're so much effort otherwise!

Struggler, thanks so much for this Idiot's Guide to Artichokes - I've never been sure what to do with them, so this is F.A.B :)

Everything you do is great, but I swear to high christ, Frankie, hearing you say "garlic aioli" killed me inside a little bit. It's either aioli which I know you know doesn't have egg in it, or it's garlic mayo.
