One of my favorite parts of The Artist's Way is "Artist Dates." The idea is to try new things, find inspiration, and fill your creative well. Today I'm sharing my tips and ideas to help other artists (especially introverts like me) get out there and explore for the sake of making art. I share some realistic tips after having done many artist dates, and I've also created a PDF download below with ideas for different seasons.
If you have any favorite artist date ideas or just things you do to get inspired as an artist--I'd love to hear from you! Thanks for watching!

All great tips! An idea I had for when I need an accountability buddy for artist dates is to commute together, but spend the 2hrs separately and regroup for lunch or drink before commuting home. Something that has helped me as an introvert, anxious artist: I made a list of libraries within 30~45mins and when I feel adventurous I choose one from the list thats new to me. Hopefully they have a nook to camp out in or big windows with nice views, but it’s always nice to just aimlessly browse thru the stacks. Good luck with your artist dates!

This is such a brilliant idea!!! That's a great way to merge having a friend to do this along with, while still doing things on your own. Good idea Samantha! And I love your idea about the list of libraries, I also love finding a nook to camp out at. I usually do coffeeshops that are quieter (some can be too loud for me), but I really like the library idea! I used to do this when I went to college and would study in the library. Plus, like you said, it's fun to browse all the books! You could even find some art books to read. 😊

I can't imagine just doing artist dates by myself all of the time. Thanks for sharing that! Definitely more realistic for me.

It definitely is a great small step to get yourself out there doing artist dates by yourself! Thanks for commenting!

Jaclyn!! Thank you for giving us permission to change the rules a bit!! I love the idea of going out alone. But feel much more comfortable and inclined to go if I have a friend along! Or yay! To be able to just go outside into my back! It counts yay! Baby steps. How freeing ❤

I think it’s definitely okay to change the rules a bit - it helped me take steps to going out by myself and now I can do it! I still prefer just to go into nature by myself, but have been going to coffee shops a few times alone and it gets easier. 😝 I’m so glad you are also taking little steps too - backyards are perfect for that!! Do you have it set up with a garden or a bench to sit on?!

Hello, fellow Colorado artist! I just finished this book around the end of October. It's great seeing more and more people talking about it. One of the important takeaways I got out of Julia's suggestions for artists dates was to make sure to not force them into being something productive. For me, that meant only sketching or drawing on the date if I was feeling really inspired to do so. Otherwise, the point was to just indulge my senses. In Week 6, she writes "Creativity is not and never has been sensible." I was falling into the trap of multi-tasking during my Artists Dates so that I'd feel justified in doing them. "I got a sketch out of it." or "I also managed to pick up some pest spray for my houseplant while I was browsing the garden center." It's hard for me to really just do things for the fun of it only. I'm with you on it being tough to go out on my own! The pandemic lockdown really cemented that introversion habit in me of staying put, not commuting, not being in public. But these dates have really been helping me and building up my self-confidence. If you're ever going to be North of Denver, send me a message. I'm always looking for more creative friends to spend time with, and it's nice to have common ground like doing The Artist's Way as a means to find similar interests other than just "I like drawing". I'm currently going through her book "Walking in this World." Have a great day!

Kelly! I am so happy to read your comment. I love that you learned from your Artist Dates that you were multi-tasking and needed to reframe it to just have fun and indulge your senses. That is a good tip to realize that about oneself and grow from it. I probably did the same with some of my earlier Artist Dates! Especially when I started my channel and wanted to have content. 😝 Now I make sure to go out and just enjoy my Artist Dates. And I would love to meet up next time I'm in the Denver area! I have a friend who lives there so I try to visit semi-often! Feel free to DM me on IG so we can be friends!!

These are great ideas for low-cost artist dates, especially thrifting. I also like going to 99 cent only store, dollar general, etc. Thanks for making the video.

Jaclyn!! I'm so happy the algorithm brought me here. I love your vibe and can't wait to discover your channel :)) I'm a few weeks into The Artist's Way and I have yet to go on a single artist date... I just feel a lot of resistance to it. Thanks for the tips :) (I too, get anxious to leave the house :'))

I'm planning to go through this book in the new year and hearing your advice is really helpful (for this introverted homebody). Your download of ideas is really inspiring too. I listened to the book as an audiobook years ago, but never did the course.

I'm so glad you liked the advice! I am also such a homebody, so it's nice to go outside my comfort zone sometimes - I always learn something from it! ☺️ I'm excited for you to go through it in the new year, that's such an exciting time to try new/old things again! And for you to do the artist dates! Maybe if you come up with some more homebody cozy dates you can tell me about them! I'm always looking for ideas. :)

I love this so much! Esp in a world that’s bent towards non-creatives, but even still - this is a beautiful way to create an intentional time for us creatives/artists. Also - what type of microphone do you use? It’s so nice and clear! 🤣

Thank you so so much for this wonderful comment! It is a beautiful way to create time to be creative as an artist :) I use a microphone called the Tascam - I use it for my other job so it works well enough for my youtube too!

cafe shops are definitely not the best places for introverts. The noise background, the people talking, sometimes the music that is played ... they are all distracting and so draining energy of an introvert. I would recommend being in nature, or a park, or a botanical garden, or even an art museum or a historical site like an old palace that is less frequented by crowds. And if having art dates with others feels exhausting and daunting, maybe there is a reason for that and its better to do what feels comfortable and nourishing. There are lots of things i would love to do but they would require lots of energy from my part, hence, im not doing them. My body crashed several times because of too much extroversion and now i know the signs. Being an introvert doesnt mean we need to adapt to the extroverted world. If anything, i see that more extroverts actually are in need of some alone time to go within and self reflect, but they dont even know it. This world is too fast, too crazy, too disconnected and by trying to connect with others when your body craves inner bonding, you end up disconnected inside, burnt out and depressed. And, btw, Julia Cameron is an extrovert, so her advice for creatives work mostly for her type of people, and less for us introverts.

I can definitely see that coffee shops would be too loud for introverts/people who aren't a fan of loud noises! Good job on pointing that out. I have found a couple of coffeeshops near me that are quieter (especially on weekdays) so when I do go to them I aim for those ones. I've traveled a lot and always love finding coffee shops or tea shops (although those are harder to find sometimes). But when I don't want others around I definitely take refuge in nature of some sort! I used to live in a tiny town where all we really had was nature. So I'm so glad you also find nature to be more soothing. I agree, extroverts need some alone time to disconnect. I am not a city girl at all, but have been branching out every once in a while to downtown. I find that by having a little discomfort and stepping outside my comfort zone I can learn from it in a small way. So far I've learned that I can do things by myself and that in itself makes me feel more confident! It's all about doing things that help you, especially as an introverted person. I thank you for sharing your thoughts with me and that you know the signs of feeling too overwhelmed with your surroundings. It's so good to listen to our bodies and mind and do what's good for us. Oh, and I love your idea of botanical gardens!! I looked one up near me and am going to visit it soon. It's such a good place to go during the colder months since the mountains (where I live) are covered in snow already. lol. Thank you for that wonderful idea!

Sorry but the whole point of the artist date is to be ok with being alone , and doing things that you like. It doesn’t need to be new. It can be going to that store you like to just browse. It’s alone time to be present eith yourself.

Hey! Yes, in the book it does talk about that for sure, but I wanted to create a video for introverted artists and show them the benefits of slowly building up to try new things! It’s done wonders for me and I love to share it. 🙌🏼

@@jaclynbaerart I’m very much an introvert as well. So yes I know going off on my own for myself is very hard. I have been doing it on and off since the mid 90s. What a started doing was going out for walks or runs, go to my favorite art store. Going to places you enjoy and know. The other thing is to do things that you know might only be 15 minutes and done. Like a game shop. Artist date can also be sitting along in the yard. What I learned after all these years is that the morning pages and the artist dates are about learning to be present. I get that that’s really hard. I really appreciate your effort to spread Artist Way to new artist, I really do. Please , don’t take my comments as negative. I just want people to understand it’s a process worth doing.
