Very good review. I'm looking to buy my first big laptop and as a digital artist the LG Gram 16 clicked the most important checkboxes for me: It has a good resolution for it's size, It has a GREAT battery life, and it's light and silent. It's a real shame about the glossy display indeed, and the trackpad and keys position could easily be better if the number keys were more separated from the main keys, I mean there's a lot of wasted space and bezels around the keyboard, so it didn't have to be as cramped as it is. I'd love to watch you doing a mini review putting an anti reflective matte coating on top of the screen as I'm sure that If I someday buy this laptop that would be the first thing I'll do. I use glossy displays at work everyday but a matte display at home, and I feel so much better doing photo editing at home! My eyes thank me for that matte screen :).
The casing is flexible but actually military grade. :-) Great review. I'd heard from reviewers here in Germany that is is not good for Videoediting but your example looks pretty sufficient to me. I think a lot of reviewers just judge by the specs without actually testing. Thanks for taking the time. I'm more likely to work in FULL HD rather than 4K anyway. Pretty sure I'm going to get the 16". Currently on offer for 1299,00€. Its primarily for vocal recording and mixing, then video editing
Thanks for video! i will buy 17 inch model. For programming in my house or library. I hope don't have too many reflections in the library Thanks for video.
@@samann9pls who is good 17 or 16 for watching video and playing games both has 16:9 I think the bigger better for desk usage especially in caffe or general desk
great review, thanks! i like the 17 inch more because of the keyboard with a less crammed numpad. wish the display was less glossy too. and also wish it offered a 32gb ram option, or at least that it wasn't soldered on the motherboard. but still, looks like a great laptop.
LG needs to upgrade their screen choice for the gram lineup. The fact that this is so light appeals to most of us consumers out there. Reflective screens just are not the right choice if one has to work on the road.
I’m strongly considering this laptop. Partly because of your exceptional review and partly because my iPad Pro 12.9 M1 recently corrupted over 30 files after transferring from my external ssd. Have you ever encountered corrupted photo/video files from transferring them? It’s happened to me before on my old 11” iPad Pro. Thank you for your content. I subbed earlier this year.
Corrupted files during iPad transfer, yes. Many problems actually. File transfer can be way too slow. When file don't transfer properly, you'll have grayed out files that you can't delete. It's like the failed file transfer that's there to mock you. Best way to prevent all that is not to use the Files app. To me, it's that bad. Oh, the LG Gram 2021 is great. Just that it's not a gaming laptop that's all.
@@teohontech7141 I don't know if you know about the app FileBrowser (pro) but this video says it will fix the problem. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-erI79yPc-q4.html I tried a few times and it seems to work but, I don't trust the iPad pro. Thank you again, especially for replying!
Thanks for the review! I've heard mixed things about the color accuracy, with some reviewers calling it a not recommended for graphic design...what are your thoughts on the unit you purchased (14 inch one)?
I measured colour support for 100% sRGB, 87% NTSC, 89% AdobeRGB, 100% P3 and a maximum brightness of 301 nits. That's more than good enough for graphic designers. Anything with 80% + AdobeRGB is good. 90% AdobeRGB displays are significantly more expensive. The one I bought is 16-inch. Note that 14-inch only has 1080P resolution. Main downside of LG Gram display is it's quite reflective.
A great and detailed review. Thank you! One question: the bundled LG software which presumably can't be uninstalled - has that proved to be a problem in any way?
There aren't many LG software and they don't take up much storage so it's not an issue. Do not uninstall the main LG software for controlling the fans, battery charging, function buttons
@@teohontech7141 Noted! And I've since bought the LG Gram 16 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. It was discounted by about a quarter so I was pleased. Got it from a British retailer called Ao. First impressions: it looks great, has a lovely screen, sounds fine, seems solidly built, extremely light, very quick and also very quiet. Yes the screen is shiny but not enough to bother me. Only slight irritation is that the touchpad can be occasionally unresponsive when lightly tapping the equivalent of a left-click on a mouse. But again, not a significant issue and overall I'm very satisfied. I've left the LG software in place as you advised but I uninstalled Alexa the first day I first booted it up!
Excellent review, pleased I found it. Concerning the finger print reader - Is that required or can a person omit that? If required, is it sketchy? My phone was poor to bad about agreeing my finger was indeed my finger print! Real hassle.
I will review that soon but my review unit is not in yet. Despite not being able to test the new 2022 model yet, I will still recommend it especially if you can get it with the pre-order or early sale goodies. The 2021 model is already very good so the 2022 model should be good too. I would recommend the 16 over 17 model as it's 1.19 kg vs 1.35kg and you still get a huge screen to work on. The 17 advantage is the numpad has more logical button layout.
@@teohontech7141 the current listed price is 100sgd difference between the 16 and 17. I am so used to the current keyboard on the LG 14, and i assume the 16 and 1u will take some time to get used to. Qas checking out other 16-17 inch laptops, and LG still seems to be the one with the best value. Will check out the freebies for pre order. Thanks again
How about the software ‘painter'? My laptop can't undertake it, the stroke of oil brush and watercolor brush is lagging, this also happens in photoshop. I like LG gram 17, but I'm not sure if it works well on the aspect.
I bought the LG gram 17 2021 on Amazon (i5, 8 GB ram, 512 SSD, at 999€). I don't understand whether I can upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. Has this model a free slot? Amazon and other sites say yes, LG website says no...but a model with i5 and 16 GB ram exists for sure, I found it in several online shop and also on notebookcheck. Does someone know which is the real situation? Thanks
@@teohontech7141 Great review but I found your opinion on keyboard layout quite nonsensical and wrong. It looks like you don't use numpads very much or at all, because no one that did so professionally would preferer the non-standard layout of the 16", with the arithmetic operators in the wrong places. Having said that, why would you ever prefer to accidentally hit minus (-) instead of numlock, which does not input any text; and since you don't use the numpad that much, why would you even care if numlock is toggling? You conclude that all of that inconvenience is worth it because in the 16" you get pageup, pagedown, etc. sitting in the arrow keys. Even for people that don't care about the numpad, that layout requires pressing Fn every time. Why would anyone prefer using Fn+whatever over standalone keys... I loved your review, though! Cheers
Nice review. I was a little surprised this wasn't a 2-in-1 review. I'm guessing your usual portable drawing solution is the iPad then? I've been thinking of giving up the search for the right 2-in-1 and finding a lightweight laptop so it's not as heavy to bring laptop and tablet.
Unfortunately most 2-in-1 don't really have good drawing performance. Only one I know of that's good is Wacom Studio Pro but that's so expensive that it's probably better to just get an iPad/Air/Pro.
@@teohontech7141 My thoughts exactly. Other than Wacom themselves, Samsung is the only other one using Wacom EMR at a reasonable price (not AES like other manufacturers). But that doesn't leave much choice if one didn't like Samsung's laptops for any reason (like their use of 16:9 instead of 16:10 or lack of ports)
I’m about to purchase the 17 as an intermediate everyday device as my 10+ yr Sony vaio has died or dying… just wondering how this thing handles multiple applications like photoshop open sketch up open ms word open Spotify open RU-vid open and 10 browser tabs open??? I’m going on the way I used my vaio, also a graphic artist/3D modeller soon I’m aware this doesn’t have a gpu I’m assuming it can handle light 3D work like sketch up etc… Budget constrained at the moment… so this is pushing me towards this model as an all round… but I’m hearing good things about realme book slim and mi notebook ultra… the realme book slim coming in at around 650 is supposedly good for the price and minimalist metal quality… so I need to do abit more research on these 2 other Chinese laptops… screen size at 17 is preferable but obviously if 650 price comes near these specs then even better… Wondering if you have looked at these 2 other Chinese laptops… aiming for either xps 17 / x17 / razer 17 as more dedicated 3D hardware further down the line maybe
The LG Gram 17 should be able to handle all that work you mentioned smoothly. Sketchup should work fine. All those apps you mention are not particularly taxing on the processor.
@@teohontech7141 thanks for the reply, as a fellow creative whose everyday laptop has died it’s much appreciated! The timing of my bad luck is disastrous! A month away from Black Friday… but needing this lg now at full price… Should’ve asked you about your second screen as well!!
For 3D modeling, it's better to get one with dedicated graphics card. If you're talking about 3D modeling with Sketchup, then no dedicated graphics is needed.
Do you have problem connecting bluetooth headset? Such as Apple AirPods pro, I think LG is running bluetooth 5.1, while I can connect the Airpods Pro to the LG laptop, it only has a range of 5 feet, if I walk father away, it drop off. Not sure if this is because AirPods pro is using blue tooth 5.0, please advise. Thanks.
My brand new LG gram when touched on the keyboard side metal surface it has a electrical vibration tingling sensation. Does your two LG gram unit have same issue?
Does it make any difference whether it is charging or not? If it does it when plugged in/charging then lots of devices do that to some degree. Wouldn’t worry about it.
14 is ultra light. 16 and 17 have 2560 x 1600 resolution. These 3 have 16:10 aspect ratio. I would avoid LG Gram 15 since it uses 16:9 aspect ratio. So my recommendation is either 14 or 16. If you really need a big then, then 17.
@@deepavannan No. If you need graphics card, you have to get laptops that already come with one. If you use Autocad, check the graphics card that they recommend from their product page.
@@deepavannan You should be able to use an eGPU with the Gram as a bit of a workaround. However, for the extra cost of an eGPU you could just buy a more powerful large laptop like the Dell XPS 15. That has a dedicated GPU and a much more powerful CPU.
u r 7 years behind, sony vaio that i own i5, 8gb ram, 512 gb ssd (m.2) is a 2014 model at 900gms, still going strong, (Dell r u hearing,,,welcome LG,,,,Mac Air shud u be competing at all?), they discontinued the model Vaio was sold off. Someone else bought it , its Vaio Z Thin & Light Laptop NZ14V3IN001P i7 its i7 1060gms now...in 2022
I'm still using this. It's not too bad if you don't have light source directly pointing at the display. But if you're seated with your back facing the window for example, the reflection is too strong.
@@teohontech7141 So, it turned out this is the laptop I bought. The best value for the money which was on sale for $450 less than full pop so I got it for $1799 CAD. I’m very happy with it and it’s so light compared to the beast I had before at 7.5lbs. Another great feature is that it is up and running the moment you open the lid while my heavy HP took 5 minutes or more to wind up before I could even use it. That was a pain in the ass. Bottom line. Love the new LG
@@101Parkside So did you get the 16 or 17? Charge the laptop to 100% (after normal usage) a few times, and do a battery check. Then you can use the LG built-in software to set battery charging to just 80% to extend the battery longevity.
@@teohyc I got the 17 as that's what I like to use for photoshop etc. The nice thing about this one is that since the screen is almost edge to edge, it makes the actual laptop over an inch narrower than my old one. The keys are a little bigger and clunkier than my old HP but I'm getting used to them. As far as battery life I generally always have it plugged in since I really don't take it anywhere but that is a good tip and something I can try. Thanks
