Royals is the reason it took me so long to listen to any of Lorde's other music. It's shit. Subjectively, of course, but I fucking hate that song. So I was astonished when I listened to the rest of the music on that album to find that the rest of Lorde's music is NOTHING like that song. It's so good, so that song is so upsetting to me, because I was turned off of her music instantly. I really don't think it's a smart idea to make a single out of a song that doesn't reflect the rest of your music in any capacity, especially when you're a new artist, which she was at the time.
HollowPsyche I have the same experience, I didn’t understand why people liked her until I was listening to some of her other songs with a friend one day.

Well, artists don't know if a song is going to be a hit or not. Even if a song does because a hit but they don't like the song that became a hit, I'm sure the artist/s would enjoy the money.
I remember watching John Lennon and George Harrison interviews, post 1970, about how they hated their experiences as Beatles. I can understand their aversion to the hype, publicity, show biz aspects, that intruded on their private lives and musical ambitions..... but they seemed to regret the whole experience, including the work of musical creation and performance. Seemed ungrateful, and a slap in the face to those who loved and admired their music.
The thing with Misery Business is that Hayley wrote it at a very young age and as time goes by she realized on how problematic and toxic the lyrics are and doesn’t stand by them anymore.
I wonder if there are enough artists who LOVE their signature song to make a list on them. I know Brandon Flowers still appreciates Mr. Brightside and literally always plays it as the closer to their concerts, but he’s the only one I can really think of. I seriously respect how he’s not “too cool” to like his own hit song and how he realizes it means so much to so many people.
Some popstars actually do! Lana Del Rey said in concert that she loves videogames and Taylor Swift still enjoys love story. I wonder if there are artists in the alternative/rock scene that still do though🤔
Slipknot loves their hits, the appreciation Corey showed for us (the crowd) at their show I think really resonates and I doubt he hates Sic/People = Shit/Surfacing I guess they've talked about their distaste for AHIG album recording...but they still played Psychosocial and Sulfur

Northern Downpour is such a perfect replica of what they were trying to achieve with Pretty. Odd. That whole Beatles-esque songwriting was absolute perfection in that song. Even if the lyrics are purposefully obtuse, it works so well. Their best song ever
Stone Temple Pilots hated Plush after it got big because of the Pearl Jam comparisons, to the point where they actively avoided playing it live during Core's album span. During live shows whenever it was played, Scott Weiland, the lead singer, would make fun of the songs popularity by either saying "This is a song called 'Meal Ticket'" or tricking the audience saying that Plush was a new song.
i could tell when i heard plush the first time on the radio it did sound like pearl jam it's also like creep and maybe other songs sounds like nirvana at points
Your comment about Panic! Just removing I write sins from their set is so true. Fans of Panic, could probably care less if they don't play it live for a few years. Their back catalog is so good still have plenty of songs I would love to hear live. Its like Paramore not playing misery business live anymore. Easy to say that song made Paramore skyrocket to fame, and they fact they don't play it anymore is actually quite refreshing.

I have just watched The Doors movie starring Val Kilmer recently and it revealed that Morrison hated Light My Fire because of how it had started being used for commercial purposes.

She doesn't like the version that they put in the album because is a demo version that they recorded in a garage, many years ago.. They actually recorded a new better vesion of it, a couple of years ago
Honestly, Queen's just one of those bands like Green Day or Linkin Park that has too many iconic singles to really say they have a single signature one. You May say Bohemian Rhapsody but someone else could say We Will Rock You.

I saw AFI last week and oh boy did their energy and passion just dwindled into nothing when they closed with Miss Murder. Davey Havok looked so done he just threw the mic and didn't even say bye or say that was the last song.

After it went out as a single Chester stopped complaining about it because that song got Linkin Park mega famous

Yeah I remember reading somewhere that The Who’s Pete Townshend didn’t really care for “Pinball Wizard”. One of my favorite classic rock bands right there! And original drummer Keith Moon was one of my first inspirations when I started playing the drums.
I saw P!ATD in concert in January of 2019 and Brendan closed out the show with “I Write Sins, Not Tragedies” and all he had to say about it was “I’m going to close out the show with the song that started it all, I think everyone here knows it and I hope you sing along”.

I didn't knew Coldplay hated Speed Of Sound! That's why I never saw it on live performances! I can see why they dislike the song because of its simplicity maybe. But I LOVE that song! I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything like others they have but idkn. It got stuck in my head plenty of times xd And their signature song would be Viva La Vida but that one would be 2nd suprisingly.

I too got to hear "Speed of Sound" during the Mylo Xyloto tour, and am super glad I did. The whole X&Y album (which is my personal second-favorite album of theirs after Viva La Vida), seems to be hated by the band, with the sole exception of "Fix You". Also, I've heard that Radiohead (or at least Thom Yorke) hate their biggest song "Creep".,

Warrant's Cherry Pie is one I've heard of a few times. Sure, the singer's come back out and said that he really doesn't, but he could very well just be trying to save face. 🤷 Also, Scott Hyland is shockingly terrible at Fortnite. He struggles to get even a single kill during a match and he seems to have a 5+ second ping. 🤪The comments section would undoubtedly be better off without him. 🙄
Apparently Jani Lane (Warrant's singer) was under intense pressure from the band's record label to write a hit single, so he wrote the lyrics to Cherry Pie in about 15 minutes (and on the back of a pizza box, to boot) He was distraught that it became the band's best known song in pop culture (although not their highest charting), to the point that it was considered a factor in his suicide in 2011.
Avril Lavigne went through a phase, around the UMS era, where she hated playing Complicated, but she eventually got over it since the crowds can't resist it. I also went through a phase where I got tired of it as well, a few years ago. I can understand how an artist can grow to hate their own work. People keep asking for the same old song and ignore the recent ones, and/or, after a few years growing as singers/songwritters, they'd like to improve on the song and can't. However, in my opinion, they shouldn't completely bash their own work just out of respect for the fans who grew attached to those songs.
Pinball Wizard was not about pinball because of the critic. It's part of a rock opera called "Tommy" about a deaf, dumb and blind boy who becomes the biggest pinball player in the world until he's healed and believes he's a messiah. Great album. Check it out

Radiohead hate Creep. And I can definitely agree with them. Radiohead is one of my favourite bands ever, but Creep being their most popular song makes no sense since it lacks entirely the complexity and experimentation that makes Radiohead what it is. The song comes nothing close to what Radiohead is capable of.

One time years ago the radio did a request for a super slow version of “Plastic Trees”, I thought it was awesome but later on she felt obligated to apologize cuz of all the complaints about it being depressing. A friend of mine told me she saw Pat Benatar in concert once and Pat said how much she hates singing "We Belong," so she has her band play it and the audience sings along. I know that's not really her signature song, but I thought of that story when I saw this video. Also, I once saw an interview with the lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls where he flat-out said he's sick of performing "I Ran," and only does it because the audience demands it.

I remember when I saw Pat Benatar in 2011, she straight up said that she usually cuts "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" from her sets before she started playing it. Moments like these are why I'm glad the song "Never Enough" by Dream Theater exists as a response to people complaining about their signature song not being played.
Brendon's said multiple that he was joking about hating Sins, and that nobody is closer to that song than him, and I do think that's true, but... he's gotta at least be a bit tired of it by now. As you said, he's played it live at EVERY SINGLE CONCERT for almost the past FIFTEEN YEARS. I have no doubt that he loves that song, and is thankful for the success it brought, but it has to have become a bit of a chore to sing it live.

I actually remember I had a camp counselor who had seen Jimmy Eat World at a music festival, (and she told me that at that festival) they refused to play The Middle and the crowd was chanting for them to play put they still wouldn’t.
