Bands breakup, it happens. But many times they get back together, either quickly or else eventually, but this video explores the bands that said ‘goodbye for good’ and actually meant it. Every band that appears on the list must have been broken up for at least 10 years, and can’t have permanently ended the band because of the death of a member.

The stories of 7 beloved bands that said goodbye, and actually meant it when they broke up. Help support longer deep dive episodes of this show by LIKING/SHARING this video! Special thanks to Hannah for all the amazing work on this one 👏 Rules for making the list: 1. Band must have been broken up for at least 10 years. 2. The breakup can’t have happened because of the death of a member. 3. One off reunions for charity, award shows, or something don’t count as “getting back together” or reuniting.

I’d add Creedence Clearwater Revival to this. There was so much in-fighting with them, especially leading up to their final album together, that John Fogerty and the other two surviving members (since John’s brother Tom, the first of the band to leave, died in 1990) still hate each other and are suing each other to this day. There’s a really good video by Todd in the Shadows on their breakup and last album.
@heymistercarter.
@heymistercarter. 3 года назад
@Christopher Bingham that may be part of it. In the Todd in the Shadows video I mentioned about their last album, he compares the songs Fogerty wrote for it to the others’ songs. And the other songs range from forgettable to laughably bad to nearly unlistenable. He also made a point that, if Fogerty really was the talented one of the bunch (since he was not only the lead singer, but also the only songwriter for the majority of their career), he should’ve done what Bruce Springsteen did with his moniker of “The Boss” and clearly established himself as the lead of the band. Apparently a lot of the fighting was over who was getting enough credit and recognition for their work in the band (and hence why Fogerty claims the other bandmates demanded they write songs themselves), but Fogerty was really the one doing most of the work.

Fun was founded by the 3 of us at a time when we were coming out of our own bands. One thing that has always been so special about Fun is that we exist as 3 individuals in music who come together to do something collaborative. We make Fun records when we are super inspired to do so. Currently, Nate is working on his first solo album, Andrew is scoring films, and Jack is on tour and working on Bleachers music. The Necessaries are my personal favorite. After releasing two excellent albums in the early 80’s Arthur Russell their cellist, keyboard player and co lead singer jumped out of the car window and into the Holland Tunnel while the band was on the way to what was considered a crucial show for the group. Russell died in 1992 ( a decade after the incident, and although it was already unlikely they’d all play together again they most certainly won’t be now )

Love the list, Jon. I have one little qualm. To be honest, the possibility for a Smiths reunion is probably closer to a zero than a three. Johnny Marr and Morrissey have cut off musical and personal ties for 35 years now. Marr highly dislikes Morrissey's far-right leaning politics, and Marr's son shows constant vitriol towards Moz on social media. It makes no sense for Marr to associate with Morrissey anymore, who continues to grow more and more disliked by the public with each poorly thought-out statement he releases. Even back in 2006-7 where they entertained the possibility of a reunion for, like, three days, Morrissey only agreed to it if Mike Joyce wouldn't be a member of the newly-formed Smiths. I'm not sure how much of a reunion that would have been with only three quarters of the band present regardless of how integral you think the rhythm section is to the band. The Smiths is over for the better, I would expect an Oasis reunion before they ever come back together.

And now Daft Punk should be added in as I got a feeling they're done as a Duo now and doing there own thing, but hey loved what they did together and can't wait to see what they offer as Solo Artists.

I got to see Rob Zombie in 2012 headline pointfest as just "Zombie" and played a bunch of both bands hits. He had John 5 Piggy D and Ginger Fish with him then :P (my personal favorite of his lineups)

Coldest take in the history of RU-vid: saying Noel's solo work is better than Liam's fantastic work. Liam's 'One of Us' being especially delightful.

The only way I see the White Stripes doing even a temporary short lived reunion is if they do a 3 song performance should they be inducted in the rock n roll hall of fame.

As a long time Oasis fan from the mid 90's still going... I am always of the belief that the fighting of the Gallaghers was always more exaggerated than the media made it out to be. Brothers fight... until they had the big one that ended the group. There are rumors what led to the building animosity... and it was NOT about Liam's clothing label Pretty Green... that was the last thing among a mountain of reasons. I had heard the real reason is Liam not knowing what topic to stay off of when pressing Noel's buttons... apparently Liam found a real trigger point with Noel... and it has to do with the legitimacy of his personal Family... namely one of his children. Liam loves his brother Noel but he cannot help himself to fire off his mouth to hurt Noel because he feels hurt Noel doesn't listen to him anymore.

Sadly I don’t see Daniel Johns ever doing anything again in the music world, let alone Silverchair. It’s not that he can’t, I just don’t think he wants too. Oddly I think it’s a bit like the Meg White story mentioned in the video, Internal mental battles as opposed to clashes with band mates or BS like that.

One vocal group that comes to mind for men is The Statler Brothers. They broke up in 2002, after being together for _forty-seven years_ . Lew DeWitt quit in the 1980s due to Crohn's Disease, which eventually took him in 1990. Bass singer Harold Reid died in 2020, at the age of 80, Phil Balsley turns 83 next month, Don Reid is now 77, and DeWitt's replacement Jimmy Fortune is a relatively youthful 67. I'm pretty sure the Statler Brothers are fairly content in their retirement.

Unwound, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dead Kennedys come to mind as well. I know Dead Kennedys are still technically a band with everyone but Jello, but does anyone really care? And they haven't released any new music since the Jello days. So yeah, I'd put them here too. You could say the same thing with Black Flag w/ Greg Ginn.

I think the beatles count as well, they did break up in 1970 but got made music in 1996. Although John Lennon passed away and technical it wasn't the beatles

your pretty accurate bro, blew my mind you got the TH on here, and No, Byrne is way to good to play in a new wave band, he made his money, obviously that's all it was for, Tom Tom Club have done some stuff though, and the band are phenomenal musicians, that live movie they did is possibly one of the best concert movies ive ever watched, I wished I couldve seen them live, thats the fkd up thing, they were kind of weak on album, it wasnt till I saw that live video that I realized how mind blowing they were. .

Noel and Liam have both discussed the idea of reuniting a lot and whilst Liam seems more keen than Noel,they both have suggested if there was enough money in it they'd do it. Also, if you havent listened to Liams Solo stuff (Beady Eye has been dead for years now) you should deffo listen you might enjoy a few of them

Noel is adamant it won’t happen. Having said that he recently said in an interview he’d do it for 100 mill but that was sort of a joke as he also said there wasn’t 100 mill in the music business to begin with
