I love how this DLC turns Dark Souls into a Super Mario level. You came to a kingdom where some mushroom people ask you to rescue the princes from a monster.
When you said you would try not to cry when the game ends, man when I finished it and the credits popped up i for sure shed a tear, Dark Souls 1 means so much to me.
(1:12) Catching up with Firelink Shrine NPC's (5:34) Entering the DLC (6:22) SANCTUARY GUARDIAN BOSS FIGHT -(20:28) Succesful attempt (22:18 "You Defeated") (23:32) Oolacile Sanctuary (29:24) Royal Wood / "Are we back at Darkroot Basin?" (32:07) Hi Kalameet (40:10) Marvelous Chester / Tophat guy (42:20) KNIGHT ARTORIAS BOSS FIGHT -(1:03:46) Succesful attempt (1:05:33 "You Defeated") 33:39 this is something I think only Elden Ring has replicated the best since DS1 - it has such a unique style to it, like a darker Studio Ghibli film at times. Elden Ring's legacy dungeons (Stormveil, Elphael), Liurnia, Mt. Gelmir (despite so many ladders..), and the underground areas also got that distinct atmosphere.
@@hachikuji_mayoi Can't deny that! DS1 was my first FromSoft game in 2011, and even though I was already completely blown away and in love with the game, finding Demon Ruins made me feel like there FINALLY existed a proper "Mines of Moria" place in a video game. Always loved the place & Lost Izalith because of this, despite the massive shortcomings! Spoke to my inner LOTR fanboy 😁 Blighttown and Great Hollows use of gravity also resonated with that part of me - even if the community hates it :P
@@Metalton95 elden ring really did what I thought impossible and realized like a full tolkien esque fantasy world and for someone who is really into that I don't think there's a single better game even if ER is a flawed one.
hey I'm going to give some advice for you from one souls player to the next get ride of the habit of blocking with you shield and focus on dodges. unless your playing with a great shield with high poise armor there's really no point because of the stamina cost.
There's actually some unused dialogue from Artorias warning you to stay away because the abyss is about to consume him, it's really cool and heart breaking
That's why they're the best. You can tell that a lot of the base game bosses are gimmicky in the same way as demon's souls bosses were. Other than Ornstein&Smough, and Sif, I don't look forward to any of the base game bosses.
@@connoriquada5429 still pathetically easy. U can just bully him with havels and trade hits for days. On my first playthrough of this game (This was my first souls game) I first tried both him and artorias. I was using demon great axe and full havels, without knowing how much it would trivialise the game... Kalameet was the only boss that gave me any trouble in the dlc.
@@JrKengu imo, fighting enemies and bosses in full havel just makes the experience less enjoyable. I mean, good that you got him on your first try using this strategy, but try fighting like mati does, then you'll have a better understanding of the boss mechanically, and I find that playstyle always much more enjoyable when fighting a well-made boss like artorias. You do you tho, have a gud day!
@@JrKengu I mean pathetically easy is a bit of an overstatement don't you think? I beat Orphan on my second try and have never died more than once or twice to him in the same run but I would never tell people that he's easy when I know that most people struggle with him.
Can't believe we're almost done with this series. Next games are gonna be great though! Keep it up Mati, I enjoyed your post match commentary on the previous video
Yo Mati, I think it would be a fun idea for you to make a tier list of all the bosses once you finish the playthrough. You can do hardest bosses or just rank them by overall enjoyment of the encounter. Loving this playthrough and look forward to seeing the channel grow!
29:28 the dlc takes place in the past and technically that bridge is the entrance to the sif boss in the future, where you take the first elevator is where the alvina cat is, and the enemies that trim trees are the bush enemies in the future, the same with the giants, small details
Some things that make the Knight Artorias fight even more badass: his limp arm is his sword arm that was injured fighting the abyss, he is fighting you with his off hand during your fight. Even as he’s falling to the corruption of the Abyss he initially tries to warn you off before falling back into madness, still in control enough he continues to slay monstrosities. He was also known to carry a shield and more obviously have a wolf companion so that plus the broken arm shows how we never fought Artorias at his peak or best, we find him on his last stand and he is still one of the biggest challenges in the game.
This game never cease to amaze me with things I have seen a hundred times by now, everytime I see someone playing this again it hits the same way, hoping to see you in the dark souls 2 soon, he have three of the bests dlcs ever made and it's a amazing game, we are going to the all souls complete games list man, glad to find you in 2022 and much more of these in 2023.
I agree with that, so many people always say to just skip it. Sure it might not be as good as the other games but it is still a good game that people should experience.
It's pretty neat that in this DLC you can already see Fromsofts change towards faster and more aggressive bosses. Compare the DLC bosses to the base game ones and they're pretty slow. Artorias is one of the coolest and most memorable bosses in the franchise. He's like the poster boy of cool humanoid bosses.
Artorias and Sif are two of my favorite characters and Boss Fights in all of Dark Souls! Their lore is so heartbreaking, fighting Sif was the first time I ever cried during a boss fight when she started limping. Edit: Grammar
If you watch Artorias you will notice that he never uses his left arm. It just hangs by his side even though he is wielding a ultragreat sword. He has been fighting the Abyss for soo long that his left arm is broken. What a legend.
U can get Artorius armor from Domhall of Zena (where u bought Ornstein gear) since u killed him now. It does look great. To get his sword, u gotta do it from giant blacksmith in Anor Londo
@parthachem83 this isn't correct. A +10 broken sword or hilt will get you the greatsword. A +10 normal straight sword will get you the cursed greatsword. You need a +10 shield to get his greatshield.
I already wrote this in last video, but writing again in case u didn't read it. KILL the npc u will meet at Artorius boss arena when u return there again. That is the ONLY opportunity for his gear. It is a very impressive gear so would like u not to miss it. If u want that gear, gotta do this. Anyways, great job in DLC so far and one of the most iconic bossfights of Souls series, the great Artorius. A small trivia (in case u thought he wasn't so special 😅): Artorius was actually a left hander but he crushed his left arm falling in abyss, also not to mention he basically lost his sanity while fighting u. So, if anyone was with handicaps in that fight, it was him 😎. He fought u with his wrong arm
This is actually false. Artorias was right handed, you can tell because he used a shield but for spoiler reasons he left it behind and broke his arm in the process and his left arm is the only one with a big shoulder pad, commonly used to give extra protection to the arm with which you keep your guard up.
Watching you speculate and then put the pieces together when you're given more dialogue has been very satisfying to watch; satisfying to experience for yourself, I imagine. That's the magic of these games, what was once a coincidentally familiar location, potentially even a lazy knockoff has been recontextualized and given deeper meaning. You can see the people of the Royal Woods were simply peaceful gardeners before the corruption of the Abyss at away at their sanity. Then to realize those are the bush-people from Darkroot garden is an awesome insight. There are many more such insights and callbacks so keep your eyes and ears open! Enjoy Mati
You can interrupt Artorias’s buffing if you’re quick enough and can deal enough damage. That, along with being able to regain stamina quickly, are probably the biggest keys to beating him really. You saw what he can do when he buffs twice! Nice one though bro 😁 he’s probably the best fight in the whole game and arguably even the series. Next two bosses are even harder
SS Isshin, Gael, and Artorias are easy top 3. Picking top bosses from the other games is more controversial. For instance, I think Ludwig is overrated and feel that Orphan is the best boss in BB, but most would disagree with me.
love the episode as always and came to share some spoiler-free must have knowledge about how DS2 works. There's two things you absolutely need to know to avoid having a terrible time: 1. there's a stat called ADP, it determines how many invincible frames you have on roll. A low ADP means your rolls are gonna suck and you're going to be hit a lot more. 2. it's the only game where locking on to an enemy makes you move slower. so locking on is actually a self-nerf I guess you could say
FINALLY. And yo, be careful about which videos you watch about the lore. If you're gonna watch Vaati, make sure to watch his OLD videos about DS1 and not the UPDATED ones. The updated ones have spoilers (visually and descriptively) for DS2 and DS3. You definitely don't want to be spoiled.
Just to reassure you Mati, I think the post commentary on the last video actually has some advantages. When you’re not panicking trying to fight, you can form a lot more coherent and witty commentary lol. Not saying I like it better than the normal format, but I was dying at your commentary last video 😂
I love the way you limit yourself to keep things a challenge(i.e. not kindling, setting a level cap). Too many people unknowingly make the game significantly easier by overleveling. Really enjoying how you're taking thorough measures to get the most out of this game, great playthrough!
35:23 not gonna lie, but you realizing where, actually, what Oolacile is, give me chills also, Artorias is the second boss that I most died in my first run (50 deaths, the boss I most died was Our Friends Drake and Josh with 72), nowadays I always "first tried" Artorias, don't think he is difficult, just hits like a Truck and has a Health bar of one, indeed my fav boss from DS1
bro replaying the game with my new headphones, I had the same experience like you and realized just how stunning the sound design of this dlc is. It's so immersive and vivid - a time way back in the past
I hit that like button so hard for this episode that if there was any justice in this world it should have gone up by a thousand likes, well done bro, breathe the pain! 😁
i'm still playing through the game myself and haven't gotten up to the DLC yet but I'm still gonna watch this right now!! you're doin an amazing job with this channel man
Fun fact this dlc came about because of a petition to make it come out on pc. The people that worked on the dlc were the people that would go ahead and work on bloodborne. It was the switch where fromsoftware started making arena bossfights that are iconic today. Also one of the reasons this dlc is so beloved and a switch of tone within a classic game. That and just so much love for the community in this suprise hit of a game, with so much grandiose lore (out of place) cool weapons and support for pvp. It really felt like an expansion back in the day.
Hey dude. Great Job with Artorias. Hes easily one of the most memorable and coolest bosses in the entire series. Was waiting for u to face him since the start of this game! You should definetly dive into his lore as well! Its truly amazing.
Fun video. The Sanctuary Guardian is my favorite boss in the game. Such a cool concept and moveset immediately upon entering the DLC. I remember having the same struggle with Artorias when I first started too. One important thing, if possible, is to break his buffing animation, which you can do by hitting him hard enough. If he buffs he gets something like a x2 on his hits, which is scary. Good luck with the rest of the DLC.
Damn, I've never seen you like that. I know the pain man...I know the pain. Artorias is my favorite boss in this game and also the next one you'll fight. You will have a grand ol' time lmao. You probably know now but you can interrupt his buff and get some hits in. When you said "that may be a good time to land some hits but...." I was like DO IT BRO JUST DO IT!!! Regardless, you beat the legend himself on like triple buff! Madman! Well done and can't wait to see the next one. Take care man. Edit: There's one more tail for you to cut ;) I hope you find it. Super cool stuff. You'll love that.
Mati's face is back, yay! Hope you are doing well bro, weekend coming, hope you'll get a well deserved rest. Clearly having a blast I see, you're doing great.
Some basic ideas of what to do going forward: explore EVERYTHING in Oolacile Township and go there as a human. Also go back into artorias' arena for a surprise.
Finished DS1 my first time without DLC and went back recently when a friend was over and created a new save and speedran to the dlc and we both played it for the first time, was so fun!
Artorias bro..... hands down my favorite ds1 fight. I'm assuming after the dlc you'll do a poll for the next game? I'm hoping for DS3. Best boss lineup and combat in the series, imo, PLUS lots of cool items from the whole series. Keep up the hard work brother. We're rooting for ya!
I was gonna congratulate you for getting to oolacile. Then you got the Stone Greataxe almost instantly. Damn you, I'm not salty because I had grinded for like 3 whole days for it, I swear...
I know you are way past this, but, something to consider in the future, you can back up your save prior to the boss, and then just reload the game rather than doing that ridiculous run to Artorias over and over. That's how speed runners practice, they often back up saves outside a boss room and do the fights over and over. This has been a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for uploading.
28:08 the best way to explain this DLC is you have travelled to the past and are currently in the time when Artorias became legend. This DLC is truly the best part of the game even if I’m bias to the frozen dragon princess.
If you want his sword and his move set, don’t give up his soul and craft the sword at the smith, you can also make his armour and you can get his shield, a cool little detail by the way, artorias is left handed, so when you fight him he has the sword in his right hand, because his left was broken as you can see, you’ll see where the shield is later on, but definitely a cool detail how he was this difficult with a broken hand and a non dominant hand sword fight. Insane
The people that worked on this DLC worked on Bloodborne next. And it shows. Not just with the bosses, but with Marvelous Chester, the sneering vendor outside the boss room. If you kill him, you get his armor and it’s awesome. My favorite in the game. If you want any advice, I still think you need some sort of range weapon in your arsenal to finish bosses off. Even throwing knives. It’s way too easy to rush in and blow it with the last few hits.
Artorias is one of my favourite bosses of the trilogy and his armour is definitely one of my all time favourites, really wish it appeared in Elden Ring
Didn't even see your last fight. I saw it all over that you was in your "Zen Mode" and was going to do it. Not because it was so close to the end of the video. I just saw you enter that Zen that makes everything OK. Been there myself sometimes over the Souls bosses^^
Love this DLC Artorias is probably my fav DS character, period. He is such a tragic character. An inversion of the Saviour Knight archetype. A sad story.
Mati... bruh... I NEVER comment on youtube videos, BUT you've faced down Artorias and I have to say something. You popped up on my timeline all those months ago beginning Elden Ring and I couldn't resist watching the hot noob tackle a SoulsBorne game. Back in those Elden days I had my popcorn and kept thinking I'd love to see him fight Artorias or Manus... and here you effing are bruh! When it's time, VaatiVidya is the channel to get your Dark Souls lore. Lots of love and keep growing that channel!
I find the story of the Witch of Izalith and her daughters to be incredibly incredibly interesting. Definitely worth checking out after you complete the game
I wasn't certain if you would fall under the part of the dark souls fanbase that would love, or hate Dark Souls 2, but I think that after watching you play through Dark Souls 1, I think you will enjoy Dark Souls 2, cause you obviously crave pain, and suffering. So I'm looking forward to that playthrough.
Hey Mati, thanks for the upload once again. You playing these games makes me so happy. It’s the closest thing I can get to replaying them blind again, so I look forward to your videos in my sub box every day. I like your new set up as well. This is the first gameplay I’ve seen of u really using it properly. Glad to see your webcam didn’t shit the bed this time ;) P.S. imma ask on every video till u respond, but do u happen to be from Ottawa Canada? Your accent is so much like my family, who are all from Ottawa.
