Just like Gwyn's theme made it's way into the second phase of SoC, the theme of Artorias is resonant within the theme of the abyss watchers who were founded on his legacy, and just like him were corrupted by the force they were tasked with standing against. However as a single individual, his theme has a much stronger sense of legacy that he left which no single individual after him could fill

One interesting part of the DLC is that you actually get forcibly yanked back in time. If you free Artorias' wolf Sif and beat Manus before you face him in the present, Sif's into cutscene is different. He actually recognizes you and you can see his eyes soften. Alas, you need something he guards and neither of you can back down, so you're forced to kill her. He actually looks kind of sad as he picks up his old master's sword in his mouth.

"The bells are important somehow." I FEEL THE OBLIGATION TO REAFFIRM THAT THEY ARE! If you recall from when you reacted to the Abyss Watchers, a bell was was started the piece, and remained a constant tolling throughout. That's because the Abyss Watchers are the followers of Artorias, warriors who looked up to the Legend of the Abysswalker and took up his mantle. IT'S AWESOME HOW FROMSOFT DOES THESE THINGS! Edit: I think that the tolling of the bell in these two pieces signifies death. The bell tolls for thee, Artorias. Your greatness has passed, and now you stand a shadow of your former self, an abyss-steeped warrior who has lost control of your own fate. The bell tolls for thee, O' nations succumbing to the Abyss. The Watchers have found your taint, and deemed you exterminable. O' Watchers, you have found the taint within yourselves, and so the tolling never ends as you rise in constant self-destruction. The bells never stop until both Artorias, and the Abyss Watchers, are finally put to rest by the players.

The thing I like the most of Artorias' story is that he wasn't the hero of Oolacile that everyone thought he was, but rather a victim. Where he failed to push back the darkness, it was us the players who solidified his legacy by doing something he couldn't and we were then forgotten. Love this kind of time travel shenanigans.

Artorias is the immediate aspirant for one of the most tragic figures in gaming. He tried to single-handedly confront something as old as any mentions of written history in his world, lost, still fought, chased and destroyed those twisted by the Abyss, to which he himself fell, and there is incredibly interesting dynamic in his confrontation with the player. Manus, Father of the Abyss, was humanity's progenitor, who found the Dark Soul, to which the Curse of the Undead is tied. And so, facing us, not only he is torn apart by the Abyss that contorts him into becoming it's puppet, but he also sees a successor of what he tried to oppose, so paradoxically he fights the Abyss by fighting the player, and the player fight the Abyss by fighting him. So even in his demise he stood true to duty imposed on him by something greater, or what he would consider to be something greater, and that would not only be loyalty to someone who he considered his Lord, but also desire to protect those who he left behind, namely, those who ventured with him into Hell (Sif and Alvina), his brethren in arms (the other 3 Great Knights), and especially one of them, Ciaran, the Blade of the Lord of Sunlight, who was, as it is implied by the game, loved by him and loved him in return so much, that she, after his death, thanks you for giving him peace, ask for his soul and gives up her weapons for it, signaling that she got the thing that is most precious to her, and so does not have to fight anymore, and then, in times way after, so much so that the gap is only bridged by you via magic, you find her body at the grave erected in honor of him, with the last of her posessions linking her to him and to everyone else in symbol - the Hornet ring, one of the four rings the four knights had, which were the regalia of acknowledgement of their loyalty, prowess and brotherhood.

So I try my best tldr Artorias: So Artorias once was one of the four knights of Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight (later the Lord of The First Flame) next to Ornstein (yes exactly THAT Ornstein, the one from Ornstein and Smough, Gough and Carian While Ornstein was the head of the four, Artorias was by far the strongest one of them. He had a companion, a big grey wolf named Sif. One day Artorias decided to save Oolacile from the manifesting abyss, so AGAINST Gwyn's order he travelled together with Sif tp the already half-consumed Oolacile, just to face Manus, Father of the Abyss in the deepest point of the abyss underneath the city. The strongest warrior of Gwyn lost against the Father of the Abyss, and he backed off with his left arm being broken (which you actually can notice ingame). But he didnt fled or anything, he knew it was too late for his sanity, he knew he wouldnt survive or if he's survive he would be consuned by the darkness. Upon his last breath he saved Sif with a magic spell which protected her from the darkness, locked away, hidden in the Dungeon of Oolacile. And then the Chosen One appears in Oolacile to fulfill Artorias' duty and the Chosen One fights Artorias and Manus ... Not so fun fact: We fight Sif in the base game of Dark Souls as well and she whields Artorias' sword ... (maybe I should request her theme ... hmm) But yeah, I guess thats all about Artorias

Definitely one of the most unique themes from a souls game. You can hear the tragedy very clearly, and can tell that it’s getting even worse as the song goes on. The different phases of the song line up with the boss drawing more and more on the power of the abyss. Excellent job of musical storytelling with this haunting tune. Glad you liked it, this is definitely my favorite song from the first game

Every time i hear bells in dark souls music i connect it to duty. in the first game you have to ring the bells of awakening to learn of your purpose as an undead in DS1 and the bells awaken the ashen ones to link the fire once again in DS3. Hearing the bells in this song for Artorias makes me think of his duty to fight the abyss, whether or not it kills him.

Your analysis is always so razor sharp! The bells I've always thought to symbolise duty. In Dark Souls 1 as part of the Player Character's quest they have to ring two bells that open the way to Sen's Fortress and subsequently Anor Londo, the capital of the kingdom and the place of which Sir Artorias was knighted. His duty was to rid the world of the Abyss which was why he went to Oolacile to rescue it and its Princess, the duty the Chosen Undead then undertakes in his place after slaying him. In Dark Souls 2 there are two boss characters whom have prominent inclusions of bells, Velstadt the Royal Aegis and the Burnt Ivory King. Velstadt's undying duty was to King Vendrick's protection, though he failed in life he remained unwavering in death. The second is the Ivory King. When the Flame of Chaos (the Bed of Chaos) was discovered deep under the land he used his soul to build Eleum Loyce and contain the spread of Chaos. Eventually after many failed sorties by his knights he personally lead what remained and fought the chaos until his soul was consumed by it. Both tracks are really fantastic but the Burnt Ivory King's theme is a top 3 series pick. It has this ethereal grandness into a chilling, coldness that then swings back up into grandeur. In Dark Souls 3 the player character is awoken by the ringing of bells. You might be remembering the bells in the Abyss Watchers' theme which is why the bells jumped out as important. Basically their whole thing was Artorias' duty, combating and purging the world of Abyss but sadly the Abyss had taken hold of them, driving some of them to madness and beginning their endless skirmishing until the arrival of that game's player character

Have you played DS1??? You almost told Artorias' entire story just from music. If you haven't, and didn't do much research, that's AMAZING you got that just from this track. If you haven't read his story, it's pretty basic but very tragic. He was one of the 4 knights of Gwyn, assisted in the defeat of the dragons. When the dragons were defeated, the 4 knights were given roles that kind of faded away in importance, spare his. Gough no longer needed to shoot dragons down from the sky, Carian no longer needed to use her blades to carve through their thick skin, and Ornstein no longer needed to guard Anor Londo (and Gwynevere). But Artorias always needed to defend against the growing Abyss. In the dlc is where we learn what truly happened. He had to hold back and infinite force alone, spare his pet Sif. Sif ended up getting injured by one of the living embodiments of humanity, and Artorias was defending her. His curse resistant shield planted down, a massive wave of force flows over him, the shield not blocking his head or left arm (his sword hand). Sif was unscathed, but Artorias was corrupted forever. When you fight him, his left arm just hangs limp (which we know from item descriptions was his dominant hand, rendering him half as effective as he could be.) He blindly charges at you, his swings are insane, corruption flowing in his wake. You defeat him and Carian tells you who he was, weeping over his corpse. In reality, he didn't save Sif. The PC did, when they went back in time. Even more tragic than a fall from grace, he wasn't even able to save the last thing that mattered to him after endless fighting.

Been a spectator of this channel for over half of the year, and I really like the energy and passion you put into these music reactions (its scary how right you get some things lol). If I can make some personal suggestions on future reactions: Cantata Mortis & God In Fire from Final Fantasy Dissidia 012 Duodecim - probably one of my favorite tracks in all of gaming. It's a two for one deal made specifically to compliment each other, all to the backdrop of a final battle against a God that went mad. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WaC-ESH4MGo.html Cante De Los Muertos from Blasphemous - Blasphemous as a whole is a pretty interesting soundtrack with its routes in Spanish history and Catholicism, and this one definitely stands out thanks to its haunting melody and vocal performance. Other tracks like Baile De Violetas and Sierpes are also really good. Stand Unrivaled, Walpurgisnacht, MUST DIE, Hakaishin, and Reincarnation from Blazblue Central Fiction - There are way too many good songs throughout the franchise to choose, but these are just a few that I highly suggest you to listen to. A lot of the soundtrack by the way is composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari, the same guy who composes Guilty Gear's OST. So there's a sign of quality if you needed any. Keep up the good work!

A mighty knight of the lord of light once sought to save the world from the corrupting influence of the abyss. He and his companion wolf journeyed far, to a town of learning, a place where, tempted and guided by dark forces, the scholars unearthed Primeval darkness, and from it the abyss surged forth. The knight fought long and hard against the horrors that sprung up in the abyss's wake, but it was for naught. The dark was without end, its potential for corruption without measure. As the knight felt control slip from him, his sword arm shattered and limp at his side, he laid his great shield upon his loyal hound, its magic holding back the dark, in hope his friend may survive. He fell then, his body broken, his mind made thrall to the dark. As the dark overcame him he went mad, the once proud knight reduced to a beast, hunting the citizens of the town he had failed to save... Untold time later a mighty undead, displaced in time by magic of the Primeval dark that the knight once faced, would stand before the broken knight. The nameless undead would triumph where his famed predecessor failed, rescue the wolf, push back the abyss and lay the old knight to rest. The Undead would be forgotten, as is their fate, and the legend of Atrorias the Abyss Walker of Gwyn's Four Knights, who valiantly gave his life in Oolacile to save the world from the dark would spread far and wide, the true story held tight by the knight's closest friends. Artorias's story is not a gentle one. It is a tragedy in the truest sense, and nobody gets a happy ending. A hero suffers, his wolf sees his master go mad while saving him, his friend/GF has to bury her closest friend and the only silver lining is that only one kingdom got corrupted. It's not an easy thing to get across in orchestration alone, but damn does the OST get it key points across.

Currently trying to get all the achievements and 100% all the Dark souls games. Just finished this DLC last night. And let me tell you...the somber funeral dirge does NOT match the sheer ferocity of a man with a shattered arm one handing a greatsword. Dude was leaping all over the place like a buzzsaw and I was back peddling more often then I was swinging at him. Also, excellent observations at usual. Unfortunately, Artorias is a shadow of his former self by the time you face him. He went to confront a monster in the abyss. But was defeated and succumbed to its corrupting influence. He was basically just a husk at that point. A frenzied howling husk of a man that was still 100% capable of beating me into last week.

This is by fare the saddest song of Dark Souls at the same level of Sif's. Artorias literally doesn't want to fight you, but he has no control over his body anymore after Manus, the Father of the Abyss, forcefully took over. If you listen to the cut audio that was meant to play in this fight, Artorias is begging you to kill him as he's afraid of what he'll do to the innocent if he's allowed to leave. This fight is nothing but tradgity. Artorias is the very definition of the phrase, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain."

I am inclined to think the bells are funereal. Artotias leaves a gravestone after you kill him, at which his friend and comrade (and often presumed lover) Lord blade Kieran mourns him. Artotias is bound by duty and ordered into the abyss to save the land of Oolacile by his liege and friend, Gwyn. He fails to save the country but the player character takes up his mantle, stopping the abyss to prevent further corruption. The human-ic corruption of the abyss is too much for him to take, and leaves him hungry and lost and raging in pain when he encounters the player. But still mighty. Took me like 15 tries my first run, but I learned to beat him.

Artorias was strongest warrior of his kingdom, maybe even in entire land. When the calamity came, his people started to turn into monsters, they lost their self and the only "Cure" was to delay decaying their soul in quest that never will end. Artorias was one of people, who faced darkness itself and conquer it, he fought many demons and sealed them, put then back to their pit, and even face every matter of chaos of this "New Era", but even then he fell in his last battle or maybe he was consumed by darkness, but even that is a matter for speculation. And even now, his wolf companion is lonely waiting, for him, always vigilant, keeping his masters sword in order to protect his last place of rest.

"Whatever thou art, stay away! Soon, I will be consumed... By them... By the Dark." Artorias was one of the four knights of Gwyn, also known as The Abysswalker. He had a unique ring allowing him to walk the Abyss without being immediately consumed, however was nonetheless beaten into submission by the monsters and powers of the Abyss. He and his great grey wolf, Sif, fought against the powers of the abyss in an effort to rescue the princess Dusk, of Oolacile. He, in his heroic efforts, fell to the Abyss, and in his last act of sanity, laid his blessed great shield and his magical ring with his wolf, as to save his companion's life and mind from corruption. You, as the Chosen Undead, find Artorias in a ruined colosseum without a semblance of sanity remaining. His shield arm is broken and dangling, he wields his massive sword in one hand, and no sound that could ever come from a human is uttered. Instead, bestial roars and screams are heard beneath his helm. In the end, your endless chances at life overwhelm his enraged skill, and the great knight Artorias is killed, and you receive his soul, which is unlike any other as its color is a dark purple and black, tainted by the dark. In an act of kindness, you can grant this soul to his former companion, Ciaran, another of the Knights of Gwyn, while she kneels at a handmade gravestone for the fallen knight. The quote at the start of this comment is scrapped dialogue Artorias would have presumably had in the opening cutscene preceding his bossfight. While the dialogue was removed from the final product of the DLC, it still holds up perfectly to the story presented, and is all the confirmation needed to tell that this man is a cruel twist on the Knight in Shining Armor trope, one who lost in his fight to save the supposed Damsel in Distress.

Not sure if you've heard it before, but if you've ever heard of Dragons Dogma, you should listen to Coils of Light!! It's a very sad song for an incredible final boss!

That moment you realize that Artorias' quest to save humanity by fighting back the abyss was actually only stifling humanity. Everything he, and by extension Gwynn worked for ended in ruin... but for the opposite reasons. Artorias fought to preserve the future of mankind (or so he thought), but Gwynn strived to stay in the present eternally; never letting go of the dwindling flame of ambition that once sparked his great kingdom. If Artorias had known the truth of the abyss it is very likely he wouldn't of sacrificed everything to spite it. Each one of our humanities end in ruin... in emptiness and the abyss is the embodiment of that. Fighting against the inevitability of loss will only cause you to lose grasp of what you have without enjoying it before it is gone.

I always feel despair listening to this theme bc it feels like to me as if he “Artorias” has been consumed, taken over by this dark energy, not even knowing who he is, even though he used to have a amazing best freind “Sif” a dog. But what truly strikes me is how in game you can fight manus one to have control on dark energy, and to be able to summon sif to fight with you against manus almost feels like revenge for his best freind.

If you want to analyze some more classical music, (with a tinge of suffering) I'd recommend either Sorrow from Ni No Kuni, and The Final Battle Against the White Witch. Both are fantastic pieces, with Sorrow being very sorrowful and the Final Battle theme just being incredibly dynamic and fun to analyze, so you could try and figure out the story by just listening to the piece? Something like that. . .

The way you talk about every instrument doing their own thing reminds me of a song called Black Hole by my favourite band : BAND-MAID. At first it seems like it's complete chaos but somehow it all fits together even though it's like everyone is doing a solo. I really recommend checking it out in your free time (cause i know you only do video game music here) you can find a great live version of it on their YT channel, it's paired with another song called manners. The vibe is very different from this but the layering of the instruments is kinda similar. And on a side note, the band has a main composer (she comes up with the song ideas and demos) and a main lyricist. And the lyricist comes up with the lyrics after listening to the demos, WITHOUT any input from the composer, which is exactly what you're doing right here, coming with stories for the characters without knowing the subject matter, very cool! Amazing work as usual Marco, love your channel! (btw you might recognize the band as they were part of the Genshin Impact concert, they did the Dawn Winery theme)

I have very much enjoyed your reactions to our favorite music. Every time I hear a song that I like I think to myself. “I wonder how MarcoMeatball would react to this” . With that said I would love to hear your reaction to “Hanezeve Caradhina (ft. Takeshi Saito)”. There aren’t any Opera lines in it but I think you would very much appreciate the emotion this song emits to the listener. Much love and hope you are well!

Artorias became a favorite by proxy because of the abyss watchers he/they were interesting to learn about because the boss itself was an unintentional ally or a 2v1 or 3v1 their antagonism isn’t purposeful or better said intentional

What makes this amazing is, not only you nailed his story from his song but some crucial information that was actually cut of his dialogue you got it right at the end, in the cut version he begs you the player to stop the abyss (the thing that corrupted his soul and made him fight us in the first place) from spreading. Going from the greatest Knight to a fallen warrior who used his good arm to shield his companion causing the shield to break and his main arm to be shattered, to fighting us with a very corrupted mind and his off hand (he was left handed and when we fight him he is using his right arm as the other arm is very limped) but he also acknowledged that he was too far gone to be saved in the audio clips, as well as in his death animation he holds onto his swords hilt as if he still got some fight left in him showing even if he knows he's losing he wasn't going to go down easily. By far one of my favorite boss in Dark Souls
