Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol: The Pendulum Step Won't Work ... Fight Film

After studying Yarde vs Beterbiev and muting the commentary it's fascinating seeing all the subtle things Beterbiev does in regards to defense and setting shots up, this american idea that he's just sorta this come forward puncher/brawler who mainly relies on power is completely untrue. Sure Bivol might win, but Beterbiev will win rounds and it will be a close contest. And I feel that if Bivol does indeed win many will see it as super controversial, which will be justified. My biggest worry for Artur is the recent injuries he's had. Also I don't think he's team except Marc Ramsey and his S&C coach is very good, he would have a better team home in Russia or somewhere else (perhaps Freddie Roach). Bivol has imo probably a better team around him and has youth, speed and agility on his side. But lets not overlook Bivols punches completely afterall he isn't no Andrade, Shakur or Haney, he does have some power in his shots but he doesn't really throw (or can't) for power, he throws fast extension shots and never really commits to a big hook or lunging his entire body into the shot (Maybe he can't or it's part of his strategy), he also doesn't use the bow and arrow type 1-2 as much and doesn't plant his feet aswell as Beterbiev for example which i think is in large part to do with it. Tremendous fight, lets just hope Beterbiev is fully recovered so we can get, atleast to a certain degree, the best possible competitors on the night.

Pendulum step works really well against stationary guys with bad footwork and no range. Boxers with foot speed, range, and power can force a break in the step by running through it or time the stepper into shots like Fury did.

Beter lunges and throws looping shots with his head centered. This is perfect for the Bivol pendulum. Bivol’s medial movement will make Beter miss by an inch and pay. Beter eats counters from Bivol from the jab to the uppercut

The Step may be amateurish, but Bivol is a legit Master at it. Really though, the key to the fight for Bivol is keeping Beterbiev at range and continuing to apply pressure. Beterbiev shells up when guys fire back at him and becomes a static target. If you let him in though he has no problem clubbing you with his wrists or hitting you on the back of the head. Dude is brutal up close.

the reason Bivol look good was due to Canelo doing 450 punches for 12 rounds. Beterbiev on the other hand throws 1000 punches for 12 rounds. Bivol will need to think for survival

Thank you for saying this Precise! Before I watch this I must say Matthew Fouts is screaming about the pendulum step every time before a big fight like the whole world is depending on it. I know a grinding fighter lile Beterbiev can maul down every boxer from fouts pendulum academy. Its like Fouts thinks boxing is like a dance of catch or something. In reality every punch counts and drains energy and focus and the willingness to continue stepping around. I think Betebiev wins.

I think Beterbiev fights every fight differently. Against Yarde, you could see he respected the power coming back at him and was moving every time he got hit. Against Callum Smith, less movements, more action.

Bivol has solid basic foot work. The reason they think bivol is magic is because he beat bumass slow flat footed canelo.

Bivol doesn’t rely nor abuse or gets predictable with the pendulum step to dominate his opponents; his ring generalship is the best in the division; Beterbiev is AWAYS using the pendulum step to get into range with the jab, don’t you have eyes???

The Pendulum Step in the professional ranks can serve as a good trick to use a few times in order to catch your opponent off-guard. But against operators of Beterbiev's level, it would not be wise to rely too much on it. I think it is wrong to baptise it "Soviet style", because that was not exactly the style of choice for the majority of ex-USSR fighters. Bohachuk for example gives a decent glimpse of what style some fighters used back then. Or Golovkin.

It's obvious you don't like Bivol as a person because if you can't recognize how good he is............. HIS DEFENSE ISNT THAT GOOD? He's got a better percentage of not getting hit than Mayweather does.

Bivol doesn't rely only on Pendulum..he uses the classic boxer step mixed in. Alot of fighters have used pendulum before and where not good..Bivol makes it work with fast combinations & thudding jabs which is keys against pressure fighters who are heavy on the front foot like Canelo & even Beterbiev who is sometimes heavy on the front foot. That being said, Beterbiev is good on the backfoot, is technically sound as well as very good at wrestling & manipulating you to advantageous positions at close range, this fight will be decided by the size of the ring.

How ever the fight goes Beterbiev seems legimately hates Bivol. You can see how much bitterness he has whenever he speaks about him. But who knows if you give a man a big enough pay day like Alveroids gave GGG for the finale It could all go away

Great breakdown on the observation style between Bivol and Beterbiev these are a lot of fantastic points, Beterbiev has fought many pendulum fighters in amateurs but none in professional. Pendulum has been showcased as the premier style to take names out one after the next in the Pro's. The proof is in the pudding now: Tyson Fury, Canelo Alvarez, Devin Haney, Anthony Yarde, Andre Ward, Jean Pascal, Gary Russell Jr, Jorge Lineras Luke Campbell, George Kambosos, Anthony Joshua, Sullivan Barrera, Michael Hunter Teofimo Lopez, Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Bud Crawford etc, etc, all either elite fighters or good fighters are all names that either have avoided pendulum fighters, gotten brought to school, and or gotten beaten badly. The pendulum is the most difficult style to fight against without a doubt. Americans and western fighters have not had enough time to fight against Eastern fighters in the Professional realm to dissect and understand the pendulum style.

A good fight to watch is Bivol VS Beter’s cousin Umar Salamov. Another Russian-Chechen. Umar is a big mofo like Beter. A cruiserweight who can make light heavyweight. But he’s much longer 6 ft 3.5” with a 76” reach. Umar sent Bivol off balance twice once causing a slip in round 1. Beter would be wise to use roughhousing tactics. Pushing an opponent around looks dominant. Chechens wrestle from childhood. Umar showed how Bivol adjusts his pendulum to be effective against a much rangier opponent. Bivol runs through Beter, Bena, Opetaia and that’s all time great Opetaia is highly hittable but his 76” reach height and southpaw stance could be pain in the azz for Bivol. Less angles to land jabs on lefties Bivol is one of the smaller light heavies. His jab defense timing and speed sees him through against these bigger guys

I agree to disagree have seen him in tough fights and he always does simplistic movement but a little bit extra and it works.. so I like both of them don’t want to complain I’m just saying it’s not that simple Demetris got a little bit more but we’ll see you on the day as the shorter guy thing and that has nothing to do with it I seen him do the taller stronger dudes stronger guys to top guys not too many top guys nowadays but that goes for both of them so we’ll see I don’t have any hatred against either he has a 90% ratio that I thought was BS but I watched it he wins pretty much every round of fights. Couldn’t agree more, Precise. Bivol’s tricks work without him having to adjust much because his opponents are limited in their skillset one way or another. Artur is a different kind of animal so I’m real curious to see how they adapt to the other’s tactics until Bivol gets stopped or a decision is made.

I don't know what is, but sometimes Betererbiev is across the ring, then in like two steps, he's back in mid range like he's excellent at timing his pressure with patience, maybe? Chocolatito will do this too where they'll seemingly be "still" on defense and then bam they're in mid range again. Sometimes, it gets lost in the action cause it's so constant.

Bivol has no problem dominating taller opponents, what are you smoking? Take a look at any fight against taller guys and they don’t shut down shit, they lose 9-12 rounds and never connect above 10 punches on a round

Bivol other counter for the jab slip outside and return with a left hook. This will come in handy. Beter has had his jab countered with a slip outside left hook by multiple opponents from Yarde to the Serbian

If I had any money, I'd put it on the long shot of a Bivol KO of Beterbiev. Why? Ali v. Foreman and Douglas v. Tyson. Both Foreman and Tyson were considered invincible knockout artists but were bested by excellent boxers...Ali excellent over a career, Douglas excellent for one night. Say what you will about style, but Beterbiev is a seemingly invincible knockout artist and Bivol, an excellent boxer. We've seen this at least twice before.

Fight could be a “boring” if it goes completely Bivol’s way. He doesn’t care if he can win a fight by landing one or two jabs at a time he will.

I think Beter can win a decision if Bivol proves too too tough and defensively sound to ko. Kolling went into the 12th round with Beter. So it’s not impossible to go the distance with him

In a medium to smaller ring Beterbiev gets him outta here, in a larger ring Bivol might survive and get a gift decision. The better fighter will always be the guy who comes out alive if locked in a phone booth. Bivol is a plant 🥊

Footwork is the foundation of technique. Pendulum step or not if you are worse at it than the opponent, you are having problems. Also Dmitry uses specific flat foot pendulum step which is something inbetween classic soviet pendulum on balls of feet and western "energy saving" feet dragging or whatever you call it. So the idea behind Bivol's footwork is to be mobile while conserving energy. That's one of the secrets why his gas tank seems to be endless.

Just realizing how bad Bivol's record and opponents actually is. Bivol is going to have to be able to somehow avoid Beterbiev's blatant rabbit punches. Maybe Turki's guys will help Bivol out by making sure Beterbiev isn't allowed to throw punches at all.

You aint grasping the pendulum step bro. Its not the bouncing part. Its The step part. That lets you bring ure feet and weight with you to reach a guy on his back foot. Like how OG Big Pac would do when he double jabbed and fired the str8 left and bozo's called it lunging in. Almost every "going str8 back fighter" is using a pendulum step to retreat.

The pendulum step isn't as effective when your opponent has reach on you and is trying to time u.

They'll be using most of punches so pendulum step is not as big deal... i think bivol would still come out the winner with sharp punches and when his opponent gets really hurt he could do the knock out

Bivol is probably the most versatile fighter certainly in the division , and he fought zinad the way he did, precisely because he wanted to test out being more aggressive as he will need to be against Beterbiev so sorry you seemingly don’t know shit making such rediculous comments you use the classic casuals triangle argument which proves you don’t know what your talking about… Foreman Ali and Frazier being the most famous example .

Bivol has never been knocked down, beterbiev has been knocked down twice. Also Usyk didnt master the pendulum step like Bivol has. Bivol beat Ducknelo and Ducknelo is hard to beat. Bivol has also fought a few good boxers that were bigger than him and it worked against them. Ether way this fight with beterbiev is gonna be a great fight and can be the fight of the year. I do like both of them and cant wait for this fight to happen.
