Arturia Microfreak - Let's Build... a Classic Lead!

As the name suggests, the Arturia Microfreak is capable of some crazy, weird sounds; but today let's try something a little more conventional: a classic lead sound, but with some special Microfreak twists...
The reverb you hear is the Digitech Polara.

I know right?? It's weird isn't it? I think it's because it makes the average perceived pitch lower which makes it seem more chilled out maybe? It's just slightly more pleasant on the ears.

Thanks very much! I just got a microfreak and wasn’t feeling great enough about the sounds. This is the first time I am really excited about what I’m hearing. And it’s been a really nice exercise for me to follow along.

Yes pitch drop does I suppose vibrator to the ear is raising it a bit as an average anyway that's why your truck must work but it just does sound more in tune and centred 😁

I'm not likely to get a Microfreak, but this nicely illustrates the effectiveness of a small number of mod sources patched to a small number of destinations. It's easy to wish for more EGs or LFOs, but you don't need them!

And I only really touch on the cycling envelope's flexibility in this video. When you realise that the rise and fall are modulatable in the matrix, things start to get really interesting.

I'd love to know the science behind why that sounds better to my ears... I think it might be that it gives the impression of a lower overall average pitch?

@@OscillatorSink I'm not qualified to speak about psychoacoustic phenomena but I do think we hear a flat note easier than we do a sharp one. The impression you referred to as "sea-sick" is a great example. We can tell there is something not quite right but don't easily perceive the cause when it is a sharp note. But if it is flat then we immediately perceive it as "detuned". So when the motion is from the bottom up it "seems" more natural like a trumpet blat or over-bowed violin. Just a guess really.

davidryle you’re sort of right, normally (think acoustic string) with vibrato the pitch would be around the tone: above and below. The cycle env only goes up, so above the note and then back to the note. Pitching global down compensates for this

You can use just the LFO: press Assign-1 and then click Matrix knob when on LFO - Pitch

@@OscillatorSink It's not very clear in the manual. Also you can modulate an assigned target, es: key assign1 on sustain, intersection of press with assign 2 to modulate LFO-assign1. Now with after touch you modulate a "tremolo" based on LFO that modulates sustain.

It definitely can be harsh, but I've been mostly making soft, warm pads and basses honestly. And a few angry sounds too of course!

the new sound pack released on friday is KILLER, a bunch of really nice sounding pads. Like REALLY nice! Plaisir Pads, or something like that. Super easy to load onto MF

Hello Oscilator Synk. First of all I woul congratulate you because your videos are very usefull and I am using a lot your online tool for editing on my volca FM. Very helpfull to understand this little FM synthesizer and to found big sounds. I am aswell trying your patches. Some are realy nice. But the point is I would ask you if you know if can recreate the sound of the EDM Wasp with the Arturia Microfreak. I need those kind of sounds for my live set because I used a lot the VST FREE "Waspy" on my last album and I cannot aford a real EDM Wasp.... This little hybrid synth seems similar but I'm not sure if it's the correct one... Thanks a lot!

Hi there, the Wasp has a very specific filter design - very angry and weird, and that really defines its sound. The SEM filter on the Microfreak is very different, a lot smoother, so I'm not sure that'd be my first choice.

@@OscillatorSink I know... Thats why it's complicated to found a simular sound. The EDM Wasp seems so unique! I was aswell thinking maybe on the Skulpt by Modal Electronics or the Buzzy! synth. .. Both are digital... but listening to the tutorials on youtube they have something familiar. .. do you have an opinion about this synths? Or you know other possible solutions? Thanks!! :-)

I just realised that if you want to keep the cycling envelope, you can just keep the mod matrix with the LFO selected to pitch and use the mod matrix dial to control it. a bit more of a stretch but at least it's an option. there's a couple of little limitations like this i've noticed since i've gotten my microsynth that can be frustrating.

also for convenience sake I *really* wish the Freak had a simple built in distortion/delay/reverb in the patch menu, and amp selectable in the mod matrix, it's extremely difficult to get any kind of tremolo sound.

Sister Rose Since this thing is monophonic, I use a guitar headphone amp with effects. It plugs discretely into the back. There are some nice ones on Amazon for $50 or even less. Plus they all have a stereo Aux In, fixing another MicroFreak shortcoming.

Thanks, I'm really pleased you learned something from this one! I won't be selling one, but once I get some time to really focus in on it, I'll make one to give away - I try to make all my patch packs free unless it's a charity thing or something!

Hi Mate, very useful stuff for somebody that’s learning synthesis-thank you so much, can you tell me - is it possible to make didgeridoo sound with just Microfreek and if yes- how to go about it?

Hmm didgeridoo. So you can get a pretty cool growly sound with the FM oscillator with the ratio turned low maybe paired with high resonance on the filter. The formant oscillator playing low notes could be a good place to start as well - slowly modulating the first two parameters, maybe also assigning one or both to pressure could be cool?

Oscillator Sink I’ve been trying for hours now, i I’ve got few pretty cool sounds so far and I’ve learned few tricks but nothing that sounds similar to didgeridoo, I’ll keep trying thou - and i think that didgeridoo as simple as the instrument is itself makes sound that is not necessarily easy to replicate. Thank you again!( btw i play didgeridoo - worst case - i can sample it- but that’s not the point :))
