Released in 1977, the CS-80 was a monster of a machine, weighing more than the average person and packing a huge sound to match. It was very expensive, and sold in limited quantities, but has gone on to become one of the most beloved and respected vintage synthesisers.
In this episode I describe how the Voltage-Controlled Filter applies tonal shaping to the waveforms generated by the Oscillators - and there are two different filters: the Low-Pass Filter (LPF) and High-P:ass Filter (HPF).
As with most features concerning this synthesiser, there are non-standard attributes about its filter engine... that's where its unique sound comes from!
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician and a songwriter. I've created this channel - One Man and His Songs - in order to share with you everything I learn as I strive to improve my songwriting skills. Watch my songs evolve each week - the rhythms, the melodies, the lyrics, the production... everything I need to learn in order to produce professional-sounding music of which I can be proud!
I play the electric and acoustic guitar, and the bass guitar, and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase. It is my intention to build a library of tutorial series concerning both Cubase itself and also the software, instruments and tools within it that I most enjoy using. All of my tutorial videos will focus strictly on being PRACTICAL guides - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about :)
I want to build a community of music-lovers with whom I can share my experiences, and from whom I can gain valuable feedback as I pursue my dream of learning to write great songs. I really hope you'll join me on my journey!

Anthony, another difficult anomaly explained well. It took me a while to get around how to create a ADSR envelope without the S. The trick for me to fully get it is to understand that the cutoff frequency IS the sustain frequency (unlike your usual synths). I hope these videos get more attention here as your teaching method is very clear. My wife is half way through your ARP 2600 series and has understood everything (we're both proud of that!) Regards, Charlie

Pauline calls them toilet rolls (actually painted bird-feeder-post offcuts, on top of an old kitchen knife block ;)) Sadly no more after a bit of a re-vamp, but I had a soft spot for the old loo-roll logs!

Why can I still hear sound from an oscillator when the 'VCF Level' for that oscillator is at 0?
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 3 года назад
There are several possibilities. 1. Every patch has two independent sound generators (I and II), so the sound could be coming from the other generator. 2. Each sound generator has a dedicated sine wave generator, so it could be that. 3. The synth is capable of having multiple GROUPS of sound, each with their own dedicated user interface. (I deal with Multi Mode in Episode 8). Unfortunately without deconstructing the settings you're using I can't say for sure what the reason is, but as far as that particular oscillator is concerned, it's not that... it's something else.
