Released in 1977, the CS-80 was a monster of a machine, weighing more than the average person and packing a huge sound to match. It was very expensive, and sold in limited quantities, but has gone on to become one of the most beloved and respected vintage synthesisers.
In this episode I cover the basic sound generation module in the CS-80V - The Oscillator. (Actually, it has two, but just for now let's deal with them one at a time!)
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician and a songwriter. I've created this channel - One Man and His Songs - in order to share with you everything I learn as I strive to improve my songwriting skills. Watch my songs evolve each week - the rhythms, the melodies, the lyrics, the production... everything I need to learn in order to produce professional-sounding music of which I can be proud!
I play the electric and acoustic guitar, and the bass guitar, and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase. It is my intention to build a library of tutorial series concerning both Cubase itself and also the software, instruments and tools within it that I most enjoy using. All of my tutorial videos will focus strictly on being PRACTICAL guides - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about :)
I want to build a community of music-lovers with whom I can share my experiences, and from whom I can gain valuable feedback as I pursue my dream of learning to write great songs. I really hope you'll join me on my journey!

You’re a legend for this series. I’m about to check out your other Arturia synth breakdowns. Learned a whole lot from this series alone. Just got to the preset deep dives. Thank you so much brother. 🙏

This series of videos on the CS-80 are so well done. Your depth of knowledge and ability to explain the synthesis and controls on this synth is impressive. I'd be lost without you

Excellent tutorial! Your in-depth explanation of the CS-80V's oscillators was really helpful, and I appreciated the way you broke down each parameter and demonstrated its effect on the sound. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series and learning more about this amazing synth. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, and keep up the great work!

I love this series of videos. It has helped me so much to navigate the complicated and sometimes counter-intuitive synth. As you are probably aware, this is not longer the must current version, and the current version has some substantial differences. Would you consider doing another a new series for the new Arturia version? I would love to have some preset deep dives on patches that I can look at in my synth. Sadly, the presets that you covered in the deep dive videos no longer exist in the current version. Anyway, thank for everything

Thanks for the kind feedback! I'm aware that as these videos age they're going progressively out-of-date, but there's so much cool stuff to cover that it's difficult to keep all the plates spinning! I'll certainly give it some thought, though.

The GUI of this synth doesn't seem to translate well in the digital world. I'm guessing these are more intuitive in the hardware world. But yes you have a way of breaking down complex things making them easier to understand. Much Thanks.

Thank you! It is one of the more challenging interfaces to understand, for sure. Vangelis once described it as the only true "musical instrument" in the synth world, because he played it with such expression. I think a lot of that is lost in a plugin - stuff like the ribbon, for example. (Not that I've ever owned a real CS-80... I chose to buy a house instead!)

When working in Cubase Pro, are there generally any advantages to using the Arturia CV-80 instead of Halion's Flux or Trip?
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs Год назад
Only if you think there are! Many instruments have large areas of functional similarity, but on any given day one will inspire me and another won't.

Did anyone encounter the following problem: PW only works with the second OSC (with the default preset)? Thanks
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 3 года назад
Are you sure you had the Square Wave on for Osc I? PW only operates on the square wave, so you might have just been hearing the Tri/Saw wave on its own
@dormaettu302
@dormaettu302 3 года назад
@@OneManAndHisSongs Yes I'm sure, but I it fix by taking a preset with the PW that was working with OSC1 and I reset all the parameters to make it my own default patch. Thanks again for these tutorials the Multi was a clear and precise.

How close is the vst to the real cs 80?
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 2 года назад
Dunno, I've never even met anyone who owned an original. In terms of the functional replication, Arturia are well-regarded for being very faithful to the original design, so I'd guess pretty close.
