Released in 1977, the CS-80 was a monster of a machine, weighing more than the average person and packing a huge sound to match. It was very expensive, and sold in limited quantities, but has gone on to become one of the most beloved and respected vintage synthesisers.
in this episode I talk about Touch Response, or keyboard sensitivity, as well as describe how to mix the two oscillators together.
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician and a songwriter. I've created this channel - One Man and His Songs - in order to share with you everything I learn as I strive to improve my songwriting skills. I play the electric and acoustic guitar, and the bass guitar, and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase. It is my intention to build a library of tutorial series concerning both Cubase itself and also the software, instruments and tools within it that I most enjoy using. All of my tutorial videos will focus strictly on being PRACTICAL guides - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about :)
I want to build a community of music-lovers with whom I can share my experiences, and from whom I can gain valuable feedback as I pursue my dream of learning to write great songs. I really hope you'll join me on my journey!

So the sync is sort of like an FM switch it seems like. Thank you for your tutorials they have really helped me explore the CS-80 in a more educated way! I subscribed to your channel as I will be watching the modular and arp-2600 as well.

Love your Videos. You've been a great help. Unfortunately the newer version of this synth doesn't have some of the same features yours does. with the new version you can't sync the oscillators anymore. The option to change the filter slopes is gone as well as some other things. I don't understand why they took features away......... I've noticed other features missing on some of their other synths too. Like their Jup 8 V isn't able to have more than 16 voices. The older version had 32

Thanks for the feedback. It's probably time I looked at making a new series, since the CS-80 is one of my go-to plugins and my tutorials should really reflect the latest state of play.

What is the MIDI keyboard you use with the CS80v? I want to get a MIDI keyboard with aftertouch, but they seem to all be low quality. I see people pressing pretty hard to get the aftertouch effect. You do not see Vangelis turning his finger tip red to get his performances... IMHO

I have a Native Instrument Komplete S49. It's fabulous. Expensive, for a MIDI controller, but oozes quality.

I just can't get my head around the oscillator sync with this synth. When I think of a typical sync sound, it is generated by sweeping the frequency of one oscillator independently of the other. I see no way of doing that with the CS-80 (except by opening Arturia's magic modulation box). Am I missing something ?

Nope, you're right, I don't think you can' do the classic hard sync thing with the CS. I've found it quite hard to make much use of the sync button on this synth, actually (to the point where I gave up trying!)
