Grazie Maestro Michelangeli!
In his spirit, I translated his words. Sorry for any mistakes, feel free to correct me. ABM "If I understood correctly the question is "why do I teach?" I've been performing concerts for 30 years but I've been teaching for 35 years. I started to teach because I was asked. It's not a vice or a mania. On the contrary: I've made great sacrifices to divide time in a proper way between concerts and teaching. It's always been a great concern of mine." Question: "Allow me to add that your teaching comes from an absolute generosity." (He gets emotional) ABM "Yes but this part of my forma mentis. I think knowledge is a right. To know is a right, it's not optional." Question: "Do you think this location is suitable for your needs in your lessons?" ABM "I think it's quite fitting, the location is beautiful, the classrooms could be improved but it's still very good." Question about the students' concert. ABM "Almost all of them are qualified to play but it depends on their other commitments." "Many heartfelt thanks for this rare tv interview because it's not an everyday thing." ABM "No, I had never done it."
After an intricate and hyperbolic question, Michelangeli answers back: "If I understood the question is why I teach?"... "I began simply because they ansked me to... with great sacrifice to combine well concerts and teaching" ... "I think the knowledge, conveing the know how, is due" Great man and artist.
I understood all of your comment and I've basically never studied German. It's the first time it happens in my life. The power of Benedetti Michelangeli. In his spirit, I translated his words. Grazie infinite.

+Peter Von Berg As was his usual manner he really doesn't say very much. He (at the time of this interview) had been performing for 30 years but began teaching prior to that because he had been asked to do so. He held master classes in several different cities at that time and met Maestro Bambace in Arezzo. He states that it is sometimes quite difficult, one would think so, to manage a performing career and teach. He says that "Knowledge is a right, and to know is a right and it is not an option". Personally I find it, at least in Italian, a rather enigmatic statement but that was often his way. I'm personally well acquainted with one of his former "students". Michelangeli was, of course, one of the greatest ever pianists but the lessons, from what I know, depended often on his mood and so forth! This translation is only a synopsis of course.
