As Good As The OG? King Bee 2 Review!

Every since the release of the original King Bee there's been a lot of buzz about it. I was the first person I know of that bought one and upon listening to it, fell in love with it. Then Neat bought itself back from Gibson when they went bankrupt and the price of the King Bee crashed from $350 to $100 and quickly sold out. In January 2021 Turtle Beach bought Neat Microphones and the world waited to see if they would be releasing more King Bee microphones.
The King Bee, Neat's flagship XLR microphone, was reworked and to the pleasure of podcasters everywhere, rereleased but with a new design and a number II after it. In this video I will compare to King Bee II to the original King Bee and we'll discuss if it's worth the $170 price point. Is it as good as the OG? We'll find out.

Little late to the party but want to say these comparisons are always interesting. Felt like Mic 2 had a bit more bass coming through compared to Mic 1. Also, seems like they just added II to the frequency chart and said "sure, close enough!"

Yeah, that's why I showed that. An example of nearly identical specs and identical charts but sounding different. This is why I always say, you have to listen to mics. Don't trust the specs.

Being a sound channel it helps to speak into them correctly. :-) I may occasionally put a lens on backwards though.

They both sound really good. I need to back off them a bit to keep me from hurting myself with my own B sounds.

I’ll bee honest and say that this definitely was a neat review. It’s really interesting to see the direction that Neat is taking and I’m glad Turtle Beach didn’t just let them waste away.

A lot of people would have been mad of they did. As I said in this video, why mess with a winning combination? I do think the new look is cool although I still miss the OG bee stripes.

Got a pair of King Bee One and really liked them, but the bee-meme looks and heavy weight were not ideal on the long run, so I let them go. This was the best mic for the (discount) price ever and beautiful sounding (EQ in post, a bit humpy in the upper mids), the KB1 had a transformer and was built like a tank.

Do you recommend this microphone for deeper voices or would something brighter be better? Just bought this and a zoom h5 for voiceovers and they should be coming in tomorrow. Obviously a dedicated interface is better but I won't have any computer fan noise with this set up and the zoom was more versatile. Also, the King Bee II has a low self noise to offset the noisier preamps.

It may be too much bass for you but then, you may like it. You may be able back off on the mic a little and it'll still sound full.

I've been an audiophile for quite some time, but microphones are a new thing to me. I liked the mic 1 the best, but for what I can tell from the other comments I don't have many company on that. Maybe my earphone is much better than theirs! HEHE

Listening is subjective. Go with what sounds good to you and forget what anyone else thinks.

When I started the video watching the blind comparison, I thought Mic 2 was King Bee II because it has a warmer sound, but what revealed it is when the pop filter was removed, and the shock went into the mic.

I realized that when I went into post. There were two moments before my reveal where I made it obvious... The pop filter removal was one and the other was when I made an adjustment to each mic separately. I thought about an earlier graphics reveal but went with it.

Do you like the Bee 2 models better than the CAD Audio E100Sx?

Such a good question! I think that depends on the application. I connected up the King Bee II at my desk last night and holy crap does it reach well from far away. Very bass heavy. I'm going to keep it there for a bit but I think I would prefer the more neutral sound of the E100SX and the E100 vintage over that. I bought a Worker Bee II this morning and considering how much I love the Worker Bee I (but not the way the shockmount holds it sideways), I'm thinking I might like the WB2 at my desk. We'll see. I may do a Livestream soon to try it though. I'm expecting viewers to think I'm going for a DelGaudio sound.

I have the King Bee 1 and like it a lot. I don't love the weight and how it sits in the Bee Keeper, which they seem to have refined with the King Bee 2. However, it's a bit more boomy in the lows than the Bee 1, so I would tame the low end with EQ a bit more than the Bee 1. Great stuff, and thanks for the video!

Like the comparison and video.Owning two KB1’s at $99 Amazon, very satisfied already. They live in the foam block they came in and I re purposed the four boxes. Still mystified by the dreidels( they carry stickers with serial numbers)

@@SoundSpeeds I saw the video with the blind test that compared it favorably with TLM 103 waveform.Then a video saying line was discontinued. I was buying inexpensive gear for my retirement hobbying.

I think they decided to produce this one cheaper than the original by omitting all the kitschy nonsense and omitting the transformer, making version 2 a little leaner internally.

I think I prefer mic 1, but it feels like you could just use a shelf boost to get the response of 2. They both sound a little mid-scooped but definitely great mics.

Boosted on the ends does indeed make a smiley face but I don't hear a lot of sibilance in these. Not as much as other mics, at least.

I have a Beecaster USB mic which is way cool, high output, four capsules and modes. I’d like to mod it to kill self noise and make it darker.Any suggestions?

Sorry but I'm not sure if it has any USB filters or processing that it offers. There are plenty of tricks you can do inside of a DAW though.

@@SoundSpeeds I just watched Bandrew’s review and it beats the Blueyeti! Mine came from Amazon with a broken solder in the crude capsule input rail. Perhaps it’s the FET andor cheap caps that make it so noisy. Just seems like a diamond in the rough, with a little TLC it could be useable..

Hard thing. Both sound good. I switched to another tab for a sec and did not hear a difference - when closely listening I feel Mic 1 has a bit more high mids and a little less bass (I listen on 250 Ohm DT770 powered by a PreSonus 1824) - I personally would go for Mic 2 (at least on your voice in your room -> with my taste :D)

@@SoundSpeeds Thats how it's meant to be - different opinions :) But I also might change my opinion when listening with my 7506s.. Its really hard to judge, since we all listen on so different Headphones/HP-Preamps. I often am not happy with how a take turned out on set (I mainly use the 7506's there) and when listening back home on my DT's I suddenly dont have anything to complain anymore.

One reason for that is because 7506s allow sound in and sometimes those sounds can cancel against the sound in your ears. That and you hearing the offensive sound thru your mic and your headphones so it kinda increases.

@@SoundSpeeds I hated the 7506 mostly for that reason, but after using a velours type ear pad, I just gave thicker leather ones a try and now the isolation is SO MUCH better. I almost could not believe it. They were like 6€ pieces from AliExpress, but they increased my experience by a lot! I feel like this is a must do upgrade. When using the stock or velours ear pads I often even got a feedback loop when standing too close to the boom with the headphones louder -> newer had that problem with the new pads!

Geez, how loud are you monitoring your sound? I often stand with my headphones off on the right side and can touch the mic to my stock pad and not feedback.
