She's an amazing Mum. Not enough credit goes to single Mothers who were abandoned by their spouse. She is a strong,solid woman who has raised a great son. The awkwardness between Mother and son is totally normal for a teen, it's just a phase they go through. You can tell that he really loves and appreciates his Mum.
I was raised by a single mom. All the anger that built up since the divorce bubbled to the surface when I was 17 and I said some things that also got me a slap to the face. Only now that I'm an adult, i realized how my mom worked so hard to keep it together with not much financial support from my dad. Kudos to all you single parents who try to do right by your children.

I saw a gorgeous Vietnamese woman in a Korean class who was sweet who left her Korean husband because he was an alcoholic. Her baby even once came to class, and he was the quietest and nicest baby. That father was an idiot.
Filipinos dont get as much credit as they deserved. Filipinos who are working overseas works so hard and they are very adaptive, intelligent, skilled, kind and humble people. I have colleagues who are Filipinos and they are great! They deserve to have higher salaries and not to be looked down just bec of their color or diction. In every country even in North America or Europe not everyone are privileged. Same goes with Asean countries. Much respect to these Filipinos who give their best everyday and work so hard for their love ones.

When a Pakistani teacher (darkskinned, traditionally-dressed) came into view one day, they burst into laughter in unison. Sternly, I cut that short with a question: why are you laughing? You could've heard a pin drop. They didn't know what to say. Suffice to say that they received a lesson on why they should never repeat the behavior ever in future. Fact is, the parents of the school specifically asked that we don't hire non-Caucasian looking teachers. But few had the teaching qualifications we needed.

The best “qualifications” for a teacher seemed to be “White” in both, and in Korea, “female” due to their fear of male pedophiles. It was ridiculous. I did live in a Chinese city that was, at the time, more welcoming of non-White teachers, but I don’t know if it’s the same today as I’ve heard there has been an uptick in xenophobia since I left. I definitely had Black American friends with several years teaching experience that found it very difficult to find jobs when compared to no-experience White teachers in places like Beijing and Shanghai. Also, in Korea, you never wanted to admit you had ever been depressed on an application. It was a guarantee you wouldn’t be hired. Also, unless you’re well connected within the Korean educational complex when you lean into your 40’s, you’ll probably have a difficult time finding a job. Youth, as we all know, is highly valued in Korea. In fact, some schools prefer younger teachers because they are easier to manipulate whereas older, more experienced teachers know exactly what their schools can and cannot make them do per their contracts.
Hope this program heals their rift. I hope her son realizes how much she is working hard to give him a good life, and that they may not have much, but she has always provided for him. I hope she sees sometimes just her presence and attention is so much more impt than material stuff she can give him.
I love how the son acknowledged his mom's struggles and that he wants to be successful cuz of her. I pray that their relationship gets better over time cuz they only both have each other. Nothing great than a mother's love.

I cried with Seongjae when he said he told his mother his honest mind and got slapped. I felt his pain, I know how hurtful it is cause I have very similar experiences with my parents. As a mom I understand the mom's perspective as well. I hope they can understand better each other and have a good relationship from now on

Both sides are valid, the Mom really works so hard for the family, bills and rent is no joke, she's a solo parent so it should be really tough. Thr son got so emotional because he's been feeling alone since 5th grade, it must have been hard for him not having physical and moral support from his Mom, he's also still young he's probably at a sensitive phase right now and it's best to fix their relationship right now, communication is basic, but it's really hard to have a good one. It's hard but it's possible so hope all the best for them.

As a daughter from a single filipino mother, she's the most hardworking and loving person I know ever since my father left us at 2012 everything changed for our family. She had to raise two children while working I'm grateful to have a caring & loving mother ❤️ through the years she stuck with us thick and thin facing the struggles we have to overcome As my mom says "keep on fighting, never give up" Sending my respects and love to single parents out there, your unconditional affection towards us will be forever a monument in our hearts ❤️❤️
I think once you're put in a situation of being a single parent, your leading motivation to stay alive and thrive is raising your kids to be healthy, happy and have better lives than you've had.

I lost both parents at a really young age and was raised with my other siblings by my oldest brother who only turned 18 at the time and though my situation is much different than the family in the video, I can understand the awkwardness between the mom and the son. My brother worked 3rd shift every day of the week to provide for us and my family is quite dysfunctional in terms of communicating with one another but we can all appreciate and understand the struggles we all shared as children because we were all children who had to raise children. It is a unique perspective that I grew up with and I hope this family can grow stronger from their past! Lots of love.

this mom is seriously a superwoman....I`m getting emotional just seeing her work so hard to give her son a good life. I do understand her son too though as I have felt rejected by my mom as well when I expressed being bullied or feeling depressed. Why even to this day I have issues telling her some stuff that`s happening in my life:/ I can see both of their sides....I think the lack of proper communication which both haven`t really learned from anyone, is the issue.
Unfortunately, my Asian mum is also unsupportive of my mental health struggles and struggles in life in general. She's an abusive narcissist so she's never been supportive about that because she's an incredibly selfish thinking woman. There's unfortunately parents who exist like this too. Not all who are like this have good intentions. Like you, I've had to keep a lot of my personal life and problems to myself. Because not telling her protects myself from being hurt and violated by her. Also as a teen, when I confessed that I have anxiety, she said "you're crazy!". That was the pivotal traumatic point that made me realise she would never believe or be supportive of my problems and feelings.

As a daughter of a Filipino mom in an immigrant household, I can't help but to see myself in this kid alot ♥️ Growing up with a mother who faced so much hardship and trauma as an immigrant has impacted us children, too. We face alot of emotional neglect, and sometimes inherit mental health issues. I am beyond impressed how they both are such good people, who only wants the best for eachother, and how her son became such a kindred person. He will grow up to understand one day, and his experience and feelings are so valid, he only wants to be heard and understood. I'm confident he will grow up to become a strong, intelligent, kind and talented guy, the way they both work so hard to make it. I cannot imagine how brutal it is to live in Korea as a foreigner facing so much discrimination and racism there. I can't imagine how hard it must have been living in a foreign land with the language barrier. I believed the son doesn't have the language issues, and he could easily pass as a Korean teen if he speaks well. Among teens in Korea, cheerful attitudes matter. If you don't have common topics, it will be hard to be friends with you whether you are a foreigner or not. Don't be locked yourself up in the VICTIM mindset. You can only feel that you are a victim all the time. Brush off harsh comment because they are not your problems. Learn some sports. You will make friends easy. Sending love. ❤
It’s hard sometimes realizing that kids are not always trying to be disrespectful with their words. Sometimes, they are so full of emotions that it just spills out. Later, when everyone is calm again, then express to them a more appropriate way to convey their thoughts. A lot of the time they will come back and apologize for sounding disrespectful. They are both lucky to have each other. Ate Genevie is doing her best to be a mother and father figure by working and caring for her son. Seongjae, on the other hand, is mature for his age. Despite the burden of being teased and the bottled-up feelings he can't express to his mother, he developed into a wonderful person. He understands his mother since he has always trusted her. Their love is strong in their connection. They just don't know how to express it properly, but I'm glad they are now. Baby steps...hoping for their future happiness and continued prosperity.

Aside from being a single mom, she has dreams too for herself and her family back home in The Philippines. That's why she's working hard and sacrificing a lot to give her son and probably loved ones in The Philippines a better life, her way of expressing love. For me I think true love is one that is sacrificial if not selfless. I pray that her son would come to realize and appreciate that what she is doing is out of nothing but pure love.

Genevie, you work so hard. Not sure if there are other parts of your life that the show isn't showing but it seems you also need time for yourself, and for both of you to do something together at least every other week outside the house, even a stroll in the park, beach, do thngs he like or start something new for you both.He needs to see that you can balance parenting, work, and still have time to enjoy somewhat. It doesn't take a lot of money to do that. You were raised in the Philippines and you know it doesn't take much to enjoy life for Filipinos so introduce him to that so he can learn to enjoy even the simple things in life. He will be a father someday so it's important for him to know how to introduce simple happiness in life to his family that we Filipinos are known to be good at
The dedication to providing for her son is amazing, but there’s obviously a lot to their relationship dynamic that isn’t being shown. This poor kid has severe abandonment issues from his father and basically growing up alone while his mom worked and the then the one time he is brave enough to open up, she slaps him and makes him feel like crap about it. Of course he won’t trust her or want to talk. My dad is filipino and he is the same way. Overbearing, easily losing his temper, controlling and terrible at communicating or problem solving. It’s a product of the culture they grew up in, but it sure doesn’t make it right or justifiable.

I actually also lived in Korea and even though it’s starting to change, emotional/psychological warfare isn’t really considered as “abuse”, especially for gen x and older. So I’m not surprised the hosts of the show tried to normalize her actions.
The slap might have been a one time incident. She is a mom who works multiple jobs, who had literally no one but her son in a foreign land who discriminates against them, and was probably Very exhausted physically, emotionally and mentally too when the kid was telling everything he was unhappy about. She may have reached her limits too. I konw It's bad that she slapped him but it's not like she was abusing him.

I can totally relate to her..As a single mom I have raised my son alone too. And for the past 20 years I worked so hard too. Working at daytime and doing online selling at night. It's so hard but everything that could add to our resources is worth the effort. For single moms it's the only way to live and provide for our child. I salute her. ❤❤❤

In life sometimes we don't always understand our parents. We even blame them for certain things, but when we go out to work & realize how tough life is out there. We gain a new appreciation of how much our parents are stronger than we imagine. So with age comes wisdom, i hope you will one day say thank you to mum to mum with understanding of how awesome mum is.
i felt this video to the bone. like the son i grew distant with my mom, since for all my life till i was 10 she was abroad working for me and my brother, then suddenly i moved to a whole new country in a remote place. my mom worked all day and my brother, a teenager at that point hated hanging out with me, plus we lived in the countryside with my stepdad who worked in the oil field for months and i didn't get to see him much either, so i was pretty much alone. kids didn't call me names for being different but the teased me on things like my food, clothes and such that made me feel so out of my peers. i know my mom worked so hard but as a child and teen going through my own things it was hard to grasp and be fully appreciative when it felt like no one appreciated my existence and mentality. i always felt alone, and when i try to voice any of my opinions all i get is either a slap or getting nagged at. it didn't feel like i was my own person at all, and my mom didn't know me either as a person. luckily things are better between us now. my mom learned the mental strain she and our situation had on me, and tried for the first time to work hard as a mother there to love and listen and not just a mother providing, which i am so touched by. as i grew so did my mind and while it still hurts to think of those days, i have learned to just endure and be better.

I applaud her for her commitment! I notice that the son’s upbringing is different with the way he behaves! Maybe he is just shy but in the Philippines, the upbringing is more extrovert. Filipinos are mostly laid back, hospitable, friendly, and always cheerful. I have Korean friends and I can tell the difference when it comes to social interaction! They are less engaging!

I know how she feels being a single parent myself. It is hard work but the love you feel from your child when they do the simplest things for you is surreal. My 17 yr old daughter went for her national id card recently as well. Lost my mother who was the backbone of my motivation always pushing me to do better and I felt empty. I wish her all the best and will pray her goals are met.

What a cruel and heartless father sending his wife and son to his home country, giving them false hopes and a hard life only to abandon them. If he really wanted to divorce her, fine but he should have at least provided financial support to his son. What if the mom was not resourceful and hardworking what could have happened to them? How could they have survived? I bet if the son becomes successful one day the good for nothing father will suddenly show up and recognize him!
@@eric2394I have no idea. She was probably ashamed to go back and face her family after being abandoned and didn't want to be a burden to them. Probably she thought she could make better money working in SK than back home since she's already fluent in Korean having lived with her mother in law for years. She has her reasons for sure.

It's not all money that is important. I feel for the boy. He needs the time, presence of her mom. They rarely talk since she's too busy earning money for the son. She thought maybe that it would compensate her absence being able to provide him all his needs especially for his education. I think they both need time out together for themselves. In Philippines we don’t such thing as that, in fact we even love foreigners too, we welcome them with all our heart, i hope korean society and that kind of thinking should be change, as for me being traumatized in korea in many ways, I Just filled my heart with love, Forget the bad guys and think the kind people that does good to me.
That's definitely not true. It's just that that behavior is squashed as soon as possible, but it's not "not there". I'm 3/4 Chinese, so I look very Chinese (did not inherit the pale skin tho) but I was born and raised in the Philippines. Kids definitely picked at me for being Chinese, they tried bullying me to buy them stuff coz "Chinese = rich" which wasn't the case for my family, tho we did have rich relatives. They tried beating me up coz "Chinese = karate" (yup, wrong martial arts) but luckily I was a big kid so I wasn't beat up... Much. The "ching chong ling long" talk, the "look I have Chinese eyes too!" gesture, the works. But that behavior disappeared by the time I graduated elementary, thank God. That was in the really late 90s-early 2000s tho, idk how Chinese kids are treated nowadays.
@@HudaefCaresthat must have been a really difficult experience for you. Most kids before during those times were really not taught by their parents about differences of race and culture. As a Filipino, I would always hear those things from other kids which i found unpleasant as a kid since i love watching western movies, asian telenovelas, and Chinese films. I also have grandparents who are Chinese, part European, and Black American. Diversity was already exposed to me during childhood so i really feel that maybe now and as the time goes by, kids may learn to appreciate each culture. I really hope that someday it'll happen. Lastly, I do apologize if until this day that experience was traumatizing to you. Nobody deserves that kind of treatment at any age, culture, race nor disability we may have.
