Location: Yavin 4 Combatants: Anakin Skywalker, Asajj Ventress, Clones Series: Original Star Wars clone wars cartoons Awesome duel, especially the end when Anakin uses his anger! All video is copyright of Lucas films and such
What I love the most about this duel is how minimalistic it is. No dialogue. No witty batter. Just an expertly crafted fight. To me, I always interpreted Anakin’s rage coming from both the Dark Side and the Clone Troopers who were murdered. I will never forget that scream. Never.
true, another hint at the dark side is he wielding a red saber as well, very dramatic how he didn't simply grab it, but slowly levitates it ignited with it's red color, and picks it up with his robotic hand, this scene, this entire fight is very well done.
Most weren't even killed. She just threw one guy into the water. That was it. The only guy who probably died was the fucker Frisbeeing through the air.
1:46 Ventress: "Your fall will be my ascension to the Sith." The irony is that as the Clone War progressed, Ventress was pulled back from the dark into the light (or at least neutral), while Anakin was pulled from the light into the dark, and actually became a Sith. Poetic.
@@cujohjosefumi1252I knew there was good in her since she showed compassion for her sisters and saved Obi Wan trom Maul also that time she was on a bounty hunt mission and she had to deliver a “package” to that ugly Mafia man and when she found out it’s a girl, she gave her back to her brother (with compensation, of course)
@@cujohjosefumi1252she then went into the unknown regions to live a peaceful life after, until TCW ruined her, grevious, deleted durge with a shitty replacement with fucking cade bane, hell TCW even fucked anakain up because with how he acts in TCW how the hell did he ever fall when he was always mr nice guy with the occasional dark streak. Despite the jokes of him in the multi media clone wars, anakin is a developed character who over the course of the war from various trials caused him to fall and it took two years and with heavy help from obi-wan for the council to finally (although reluctantly) promote anakin to a knight and stop treating him like a child. It was only after that time from 3-4 years of fighting that he went from being the hero of the republic (and he did eventually act like how he does in TCW) for him to start regressing back into the angry person we saw him in AOTC and the early clone wars. Plus anakain had a greater ordeal of events that caused him to fall in the EU, learning how to stop the dark reaper from ulic qel droma, his duel with ventress, the battle of jabim and many other events all culminated into what happened in revenge of the sith. Where as what in TCW he gets angry because filonis jail bait waifu gets exiled because they fucked over barris offee as a character to do that?
The reason this show works so well is because Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Samurai Jack and Primal) intentionally focuses on the emotions of a show and not the dialogue. I believe this is because he moved to America from another country and was uncomfortable speaking the language initially. The main knock against Star Wars is usually the conversations and dialogue (George is not the best at writing conversations). So what you get is amazing animation and action that focuses on the emotional aspects of Star Wars, which are what have kept people in love with the story for decades. We were truly lucky to get this series, probably was before its time.
If you think about it, it fits the characters too. Maybe they were playing it out in their heads before one made a move against the other. I know what Anakin was doing. Using the Force to rejuvenate himself to fight further. Meanwhile, Ventress was just reveling in her power instead of preparing for the next round.
I appreciate these scenes, it shows more and more why Anakin turned to the darkside, how him embracing his anger got RESULTS....It makes sense that in times of struggle and stress he would consistenly turn to it, it was reliable above all else...helped him defeat Asajj and Dooku...why not turn to it full time?? "All this discipline and shutting off my emotions gets me nowhere"
@Sam Evans granted the clones were relatively far away from him....but do you think that the multiple screams and sounds of clones being bashed into trees MAAAYBE had something to do with Anakin's "mysterious" bad feeling?
That scream at the end is so visceral. It says everything without saying anything. To me, it conveys "What have I done? I've won, but at what cost?" That scream has anger, guilt, shame, pain and many more undescribable feelings in it. That moment really sells Anakin's fall to the dark side. Kudos to the voice actor for nailing that scene!
Is it REALLY 'turning to the Dark side' if the person he unleashed his wrath on DESERVED it? He had been forced to hold back a LOT of negative emotions over his years with the Jedi order and Asaaj brought it to the surface If anything it cements the failure of the Order's teachings
A Jedi needs to be aware of the situation around them and fight for the most moral and ethical outcome but needs to be detached about the evil they face. Anakin wasn’t detached - he let his rage and frustration to drive his attack. It doesn’t matter if he could have reached the same result without using his anger - he did and that is not the Jedi way.
@@jeremyallen5974 Did you watch the original trilogy, or at least Return of the Jedi where “turning to the dark side” is exactly what you describe right here?
7:24 A perfect nod to the ending of Vader's battle with Luke in ROTJ. All semblance of technique or discipline is gone as he just hacks away furiously, driven only by pure rage and aggression. But unlike Luke, who was able to stop himself and see what he was becoming before being driven over the edge, Anakin lets the Dark Side fully take over as he sends Ventress plummeting to her (presumed) death. It's a rather ironic end for Ventress, as she sought to embrace the Dark Side and learn the ways of the Sith, but in attacking Anakin, she unwittingly unleashed a far more terrifying force (no pun intended) that she was completely unprepared for, and who wielded the Dark Side far better than her just by letting his emotions get the best of him. She ultimately served to be just another domino to fall that led to Anakin's inevitable fall to become Vader. Tartakovsky will forever be the author of the *_true_* Clone Wars, for my money.
@@christophersanchez7731 now I have imagined this as well and it makes it BETTER! When someone gets stabbed slowly you can imagine them immediately starting to bleed and all the blood evaporating on the blade inside their body, with the release cauterizing the wound. Makes the impaling much more gruesome
These cartoons leading up to episode 3 were the highlight of my youth. The excitement each week was unreal. To me, these will always be what is canonical between episodes 2 and 3.
That yell at the end is so primal. It's like he's not even human at that point, just an animal. The alpha of a herd defeating the wolf that slaughtered his flock, just bellowing into the void - sheer victory, no joy.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the genius who created Samurai Jack made this cartoon. His art style is perfect for drama, action and stunning environments. It was such a perfect fit for Star Wars.
It's about as subtle as chicken pox, but it more than makes up for it with how beautifully unique it is. Almost every scene in Samurai Jack is museum-worthy.
As much as I love the grievous fight in this series, this fight is why I love the series 5:40 if you listen closely the water droplets are the same sound and pitch as darth vaders iconic breathing symbolising Vader taking over. Also notice how much more ventress struggles against his ruthlessness from this point onward Finally when he picks up her lightsaber I believe is the first “Vader moment”
I think his first "Vader moment" would be when he slaughtered the entire village of Sand People. And not just the men, but the women and the children...
Tartakovsky’s magic! No music, just the natural sounds of a jungle with the humming Lightsaber with every raindrop. It’s like watching Blade Runner with the jazzy notes. This is a combination of Star Wars (Before disney) and Samurai Jack. Pulls all your attention into the screen in the present moment. Brilliant.
You can see Anakins fighting style cycle through Obi Wan in the beginning. With swift, fluid stikes. In the end, it's Vader, with powerful lunges and less defense. Man this show is a masterpiece
He’s just an unstoppable force after the face off it was over for him he wanted her bad He ignored everything and just came after her and he will never stop Tht all comes with a good defense sometimes it’s his powerful offense that helps him stay alive He also jumped over her while she had the high ground a throw forward to the duel with obi wan No wonder anakin was so confident
Anakin's style was mainly offensive, supported with solid defence to immediately switch into counterattack. He's also built like a tank. Tall (188 cm, though Hayden is closer to 183 cm) and muscular due to being a longtime warrior.
@@masterexploder9668 yeah to sum up his style is an counter puncher in terms of fighting. He crates opening with strikes to then set up the counter a very aggressive style to counter punching Popular real life guys that kinda do that are guys like Conor mcgregor, Crawford in boxing and sometimes Canelo To counter you need defense but it’s different to the way obi wan uses it
Or when general grevious wasn’t a big pussy but actually a killing machine capable of taking on 2 council members and other Jedi knights at the same time
This is the single most underrated fight in all Star Wars media. The tension, the pacing, the sense of danger, the way the fight progresses through the environment, the moments it takes to stop and take a breath, the rain interacting with the sabers, and of course the glimpse of Vader we see at the end. Seriously one of the best duels in Star Wars.
I love how at 7:06 most of Anakin's head turns red from the lightsaber and the music starts to build up, a subtle little detail letting us know that Vader is fighting not Anakin.
7:28 I love how you can see the shock and disappointment in Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Yodas face as Anakin mercilessly attacks Ventress This act of hate and anger foreshadowed Anakin turning evil
WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS CARTOON? This was gorgeous. This was a Star Wars fight. The cuts, the edits, the hold of images, the breathing, the scenery, THE VADER MOMENT. This was absolutely fantastic!
When it originally aired, it was sort of snuck out there, in between regularly scheduled cartoons, and never really received a huge hype. Oh it's been praised and well received, and fans love it, but it's kind of just been around rather than hugely talked about and hyped. You almost have to know of its existence already to know to look for it.
Because its not on Hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime and DvD production was cancelled in 2004 - the only way to see this is to own the DvD or watch it from online - that and it was also originally a series that had 9-11 episodes and once the series was cancelled most people just fused all the Episodes into a movie - personally i love the way they display the Clones in this series much more than the 2008 Clone Wars
7:05 from this moment with the frame color and Duel of Fates just bangin in you know things are about to Vader on, but the strikes with Qui Gon, Obi Wan & Yoda are just like.. man, what are you doing to me? Leave the guy be, misunderstood genius, ahead of his time ndaaaa
From 5:44 until the end, anyone else ever get the same vibes from when Vader fought Luke in Empire Strikes back during the third encounter. The darkness, the ambush, and most importantly: the way the saber is being held. Whenever Anakin/Vader is mega pissed and fighting, he swings his lightsaber less like a sword and more like a savage baseball bat. The rawness as Anakin and Vader in AoC, Empire Strikes Back, and even Force Unleashed is legendary
Dawson Alvarez also the use of his robotic arm. It was never seen being used as an advantage in the movies. Its cool to see him crushing asajj’s wrist with it
@@michaelmcdonald2792 In the clone wars show he gets in a fist fight and a guy tries to punch his robotic fist. Long story short, it didn't work out well.
@@TbYolo I really don't like his design or voice. I wish they got someone who sounded like hayden (but with actual talent lol) instead of giving him a super deep voice. p.s: not saying anakin in the prequels was good at all, if that wasn't obvious
Anakin: *holding Asajj’s saber in the air, nice and calm* Anakin 2 seconds later: *AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!* Edit: yeah I get that he isn’t calm now, I made this comment like 5 years ago. Calm down
This was the one fight that completely dropped my jaw. I remember watching several anime and other games or cartoons and while waiting to see what the great masters looked like in combat, but other than bigger explosions and so on you don’t really get the feeling that you’re watching masters because there’s practically no technique involved. Just more powerful characters than the others. But this! Oh boy this! Really puts you on the edge of your seat. That’s how you animate a masters duel.
Genndy Tartakovsky has always been great at punctuating action and violence with moments of calm or tension. I liked the detail of the rain hitting the lightsaber and evaporating, with increasing steam when it starts raining harder.
6:26 Anakin tanking a force push is still one of the most badass things I’ve seen in a Star Wars fight, I absolutely love this series, glad I got the DVDs.
I figure it’s the same principle as Vader blocking Obi-Wan’s Force push on Mustafar, except Anakin was definitively stronger than Ventress and didn’t need to concentrate nearly as much to shield himself.
Agreed. This Clone Wars series is awesome. I just wish they explained how Ventress got off Yavin 4 if Anakin took her ship and the other ships were destroyed.
Man, kids back then were lucky to be greeted with this level of quality, storytelling and the fantastic choreography in this animated series of Star Wars.
For real dude. This was the first Star Wars anything I ever saw and nothing else lived up to it (Rogue One is close). The rain drops steaming and sizzling on lightsabers will forever be the coolest thing in Star Wars to me.
All of us is lucky..... very VERY lucky..... unlike most kids today..... I feel bad for them knowing more about the First Order better than they did to the Republic and Galactic Empire..... but fortunately..... not every kids is like that but still
I like how different this is from normal fight scenes, instead of pointless dialog, it was pure silence as they both read each other and we could hear each little thing happening in the fight, from the sound of the bugs, the humming of the sabers, the droplets of rain, to even the slight sounds of thunder from afar, it was all eloquently conveyed to flow along with what we were seeing instead of polluting it with useless banter and chit chat. I wish this type of fight scene would have spread out to other animators, but it only stuck with Tartakovsky.
Carlos Gallego The one thing I find weird about this show is that in some episodes Clones are the most badass dudes ever and in others “something’s not right “
Joel Hornburg to be fair, for all we know, all that took place in less than a minute. and no one really made a sound that was noticed until the last trooper. seriously, look at how fast it happens. they all should've died by whiplash alone
I have never actually seen the old clone wars cartoon. This is astounding. The choreography of the lightsaber battle. Everything looks like it was well thought out and even the use of the force was great. It would absolutely make sense that a force push depending on the strength of the push could be barged through as it isn't an unstoppable force just a force measured by the strength of user using it. Really shows off how the "Shiny and New" isn't always good, especially when it concerns current day disney. This is on a level that producers over their only wished they could achieve.
Dude go watch it it's amazing and it's short enough to watch all the way through in one sitting. Genndy never fails to make a compelling animated show.
The absolute disrespect in the way he just nonchalantly tosses her saber into the canyon when he's done, like he's saying she wasn't even worth the time and energy fighting with. That was a peak Vader thing to do right there.
@Yu Tubaru It was much stranger in the comics because in the fight where he received his scars, Anakin tied Ventress up in live wires using the force and then dropped her from the top of the Coruscant skies while she begged for mercy. Then she reappears again as a cyborg.
Watching this years later, I can definitely see Vader appear towards the end of this fight. The ruthlessness, the strength behind each lightsaber strike and the sheer speed and precision. Anakin did not win this fight, Vader did.
Jon Arbuckle definitely, I love the lack of dialogue in this show I especially liked when anakin loses his lightsaber and whenever he catches her hands the red of the lightsaber shines in his face and the sun or moon is red to show his slow decline to the dark side
Spyro Synaes Symbio blame Disney’s agenda, they made expanded universe non canon just to fit with their shit story telling with their PC and feminist characters
I love how you can see the surprise is ventures's face when anakin launched the piller back at her with ease, it shows just how much more powerful he is compared to other force users
TheBigboi16 Well he certainly was but he was using his force abilities during the duel too. Granted it was mainly lightsaber combat. When he used his powers though he overpowered hers pretty easily.
This has perfect build up to the fight. It has a beginning, middle and end. It all builds up to the climax, then it cools down after Asajj falling. That's how you do an action scene!! They better take note of this in the next film.
Михаил Потапов seriously the last good star wars movie was rogue one and thats considered a prequel, disney needs to step up its game with the new generation starwars.
The way duel of the fates kicks in as soon as the light of the red lightsaber shines on his face is so beautifully done. It perfectly encompasses the fact that this is no longer Anakin Skywalker, the jedi, this is a man twisted by rage, ready to kill.
This cartoon did such a great job at establishing the lethality of the Clone Wars villains. Ventress taking out an entire squad of troopers without even touching them is just awesome.
I love the way the rain hits the lightsabers and turns to steam. An effect they didn’t do in the last Jedi or attack of the clones. This cartoon series paid more attention to detail than the movies.
Clone wars from 2003 must be one of the best things ever happened to Star Wars, the simple fact that characters introduced for the first time in here such as Grievous or Ventress (two of my favourite actually) even stayed permanently canon and one of them even got to Episode III just puts a smile on my face
@@shard7549 This is actually part of the skywalker saga Stupid name honestly it should be just the Star Wars saga. It goes on for a while then They brought it back with the 2008 cartoons. Turns out this is the very beginning of the clone wars that's why in 2008 the clone wars had already been going on for awhile and anakin has longer hair. And kenobi trimmed his. At least we find the understand how they came to be. Clone wars lasted for a long time.
They shows visions of Kenobi, yoda and qui-gon jinn looking on in horror. They should have also added a vision of Sidious looking on in pleasure seeing anakin embracing the darkness.
It was the kind of brilliance Genndy had demonstrated in the past with shows like Samurai Jack. Maybe we should just give the rights to Star Wars to Genndy?
She does. That is if we take both this and the 2008 animated series as both being cannon(that is to say, if both seris actually happened) She shows up in episodes that take place after this.
Ventress SHITS herself when she realises who she's really fighting towards the end. She knows Anakin isn't a 'regular' Jedi - he has some deep connections to the darkside, leagues beyond her own. Probably the strongest Sith presence shes ever felt before tumbling down that canyon.
Ronbo Fett so true you can see it in his style and how ventress saw something nothing else in par with count doku or anyone she has ever seen if presence even dark sidious and you can feel his presence miles away
Yeah. Anakin may not have ever been about choke outs and lightning in this series, but you can tell he gets stronger the angrier he gets. And he is beyond pissed in this fight. That force push he uses after deflecting the column damn near obliterated the staircase Asajj was standing on.
He does choke people out in this series with the force. He crushed one of the alien guys throats in one episode for his force journey. Pretty epic and scary
I. Th. Of course Sidious knew because he and his master were the ones that impregnated his mother with the force 😂. Their scheme is what made everything happen: the clone production, the fall of the previous chancellor, entry of Palpatine into the Senate and then chancellor seat, and even the very creation of the "chosen one."
The end scene where he is wailing on her (like Luke did to Vader in RoTJ) gabe me chills. I love how animated Anakin in this looks more like Luke than in any other portrayal.
This has a very nearly force unleashed vibe to me. One of my favorite parts of how those games work is just how brutal they make the force. I'm honestly surprised we don't have more star wars movies/games doing the same.
One of the best parts of the Original Clone Wars. This was so well made. This fight works so well, little to no dialogue, the characters and the fight is all you need. Great score too
holy fucking shit, i was searching for years to find this. the most incredible fighting scene in a 2D cartoon in like forever, you could literally feel the pain and agony anakin was going thru when he completely obliterated asajj at the end. perfect.
The english to chinese and then to english again dub makes sure to call it superior geographical stance, wich is a technique only usable the day after the fair. Glad that the shitpost dub is more canon than this... the dub is named "Backstroke of the west" and is on youtube, enjoy...
@Tom Ffrench yeah I did not care for their animation at all. Too much like play-dough. Granted at least the story in Rebels at least overarches into a coherant story. But still
6:58 this honestly now fit so well with the Obi wan show flashback of pandawan Anakin training with obi wan even after he lost his lightsaber he still pushed through really learning his lesson even if your weapons is gone the fight isn’t over
The best memory was watching this when it first aired on Cartoon Network with my brother, but extremely frustrating because each episode was literally four minutes long 😅
@TM Films They're both good but determining which is better overall is just a subjective opinion. The animation and the dark atmosphere in the original Clone Wars is better, but the story and character development is better in the 2008 Clone Wars
Before Anakin knocks her down the cliff. We see images if Qui Gon Jin, Yoda, and His Master Obi Won. They sense the rage flowing through Anakin Ashe kept attacking Vintress. It's a sad reflection of the future to come. Anger leads to fear, fear leads to hate, hate leads to suffering!!!
If these words had value, then how did the sith manage to defeat them?? Oh right, patience that was built up throughout the three prequel films then an act of urgency in the third film. The sith ultimately won because the Jedi lacked in their duties and didn't bother to understand the sith of their time were far smarter than the sith of old.
Don't forget the robot hand foreshadowing his rise as Darth Vader. It also may have given him the strength to beat her, which may be a metaphor for his lust for power regardless of the cost.
Cybernetic arms and legs is a great buff in terms of Physical Strenght but big Nerf in Force Abilities (since Force flows through living things and prostetics aren't alive so it's harder to use Force)
@@ashrist621 Force pushes are like a physical force impacting you. Anakin simply charged through it. Conceding Asajj is strong enough to lift heavy stone pillars and boulders and literally blow up space ships with her force prowess, it really shows how much of a tank Anakin is
@@H1GeEn0 This duel is far superior to any duel in that cgi show. And actually the best duel in all of modern star wars media, excluding probably maul vs. Obi/qui gon (thats number #1 of couse). Bottom line is this art style in general is leaps amd bounds better than the CGI and will always be. A shame people will never see this due to trash Disney
I noticed in one of the recent Mandalorian episodes that Anakin Skywalker was referred to as the Enforcer for the Jedi Order. Some may think that reference out of place, but the more I think on it, the more that I find it a perfect description for Anakin's role in the Jedi Order.
Ventress: It's over, Jedi! I have the high ground. Skywalker: You underestimate my power! Ventress: Don't try it. (Two minutes later..) Ventress: But...but...I had the high ground... Skywalker: Sure, you did.
Ventress thought the high ground was her ally, but Obi Wan was born in it, molded by it. Obi Wan didn't see the low ground until he was a man but by then it was nothing but blinding
There is a difference between being in higher ground, and having THE High Ground. Only one Jedi could master the old arts of the High Ground, that's why everybody who isn't him loses...
High Ground rules only work for Jedi and other good guys. Darth Maul and General Grievous tried to use it, and they were either killed or gravely wounded.
Lance Curry it works for them too, but Obi Wan is THE master of it. You can’t use his own trick against him. Anakin is more skilled in it than most due to being Obi Wans student (as you can see here when he defeats Ventress despite her having the high ground) but even he could not defeat the high ground master.
The lack of music made this fight so much better. The water vapor coming from the light saber. Just such an amazing fight. Wish there was more like this
Best Anime shorts ever made.... these were so good. Obi Wans fights with that general, Mace Windoos fights with the droids, the episode where Grievious kills a squad of Jedi...are my favorite episodes.
I like how, even before Anakin gets angry, it's clear that he's actually the better lightsaber fighter while Ventress is the more skilled telekinetic. Very fitting for the difference in training between a Jedi and a Nightsister.
No, Nightsisters and Ventress were not associated back in the day. She was a Rattatakki. Think more of the difference of a Jedi Knight and a Sith Assassin
@@Alrokako if you meant overall the better fighter dooku probably believed being good in the force is better than being a good lightsaber duelists as dooku first tries using force abilities on yoda until he saw it was no use so they resort to lightsaber dueling you can only be so good at using a lightsaber but the force has endless possibilities
She just wasn't better telekineticly. She threw a pillar at him, he then effortlessly smashed her into the stairs with it, then he tanked a force push and hit her with one of his own. Anakin is far superior to ventress.
