One common yoga injury is to strain or overstretch the hamstring up near the sitting bone at the insertion of the muscle. This frustrating condition can be quite debilitating and take a long time to heal. Also it is often difficult to pinpoint what to avoid and what positive actions to take to promote healing or at least prevent further strain. In this video I offer several helpful, practical ideas on how to heal or at least manage the condition including:
1) Learning to provide healing resistance to straightening your leg in all poses that call for extended legs
2) Learning to create a neutral pelvis and to avoid excessively tipping your pelvis forward when forward bending or doing other poses.
3) Wrapping a tie around your upper thigh to take pressure of the muscle.
4) Working in a variety a of ways with a seated forward bends including finding fulfilling, wholesome actions in upright positions, varying the position of your arms and hands, resting your head on block or a chair, and planting your feet at a wall.
5) Learning to pull your focus away from the offended area near the sitting bone and enlist more participation from your entire body in the expression of your pose.
Enjoy!
