And that´s why creative art is so liberating and should be protected. Your enjoyment of a certain aspect of a piece does not have to correlate in any way with others opinions. And if nobody likes it but you do then it fulfilled its purpose already. Same for me and Grimgar of Ash and Fantasy, I loved the main protagonist, his self doubts and the steps two steps back for every three steps forward he takes, I can see myself reflected in that, I connect with him and the writing. Should it matter then to me whatever everyone else thinks? People hate being called out on mistakes, they hate being called liars even when they are, they despise harsh truths and look for confrontation with anyone but their own mistakes. So for me that process is very important but takes time and I enjoy that time, I don´t wanna have to justify my likings to others. Overall art tho has an issue with commercialism, engraining the popular majorities view into the worth of the art itself. Like the majority could have anything to say about emotional value. It kind of enslaves itself to money and people in that regard, having to appeal to numbers...when in reality all it needs to do is bringing joy to whoever gets it out of it. So what I wanna say is, slow progression does not mean better or deeper discussions at all but if it does then that slowness is systemically needed to get into that depth, there is no reason to justify your need of that before others or compare it for that matter, rather the only thing that it should lead to is you hoping for more of that content regardless of what the majority wants or finding other pieces that cater your needs. In short, writing is art and art should not concern itself with being a certain way but be the best it can be and that means for you as the reader to value that experience, its ok to like what you like regardless of what others want^^
I really like a slow start when it pays off in the end, when the slow start is there to make what happens later more impactful. Another example of are the games in the Trails series. And an absolute masterclass of this aspect is Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth.
Mynes family only really care that She is better. Mynes mother and Sisted definatly noticed a change but well Myne isnt dead and is starting to get better and contdibute. Also I really like how the series introduces the fantasy elements. From hair colour to crazy plants, to the devouring, and then byond that as well.
Yes. Basically that family has lost several children who died very young, only Tuuri managed to be strong enough, and it looked like after surviving for a few year, their other surviving daughter Maine would die before reaching baptism. They noticed that she changed and had become strange, but they obviously are not going to think that the person inside changed; so they just decide that as long as she's better and smiling, it's fine. Lutz see a lot more of the strangest side of Maine, as he sees her crafting things and using knowledge and words/concepts that just can't be let as simple fluke or being a bit weird.
Technically this is what reincarnation is about. You do not regain your memories at birth of a past life at birth. You need something drastic like hypnosis or something like that. She is not replacing a soul if it is the same soul.
and what more we find out "old Myne" dreamed of her past life and told her mother she wished she could escape to the world of her dreams before the devouring awaked her old persona, which surpisnly matches what people consider Gunter's personality so he behvioure is less strange but more like she was taking after her father
To be honest, I to me, seeing Main's family not noticing that there is something different about her behavior, wasn't that jarring. After all, in real life parents often don't realize that there is some strange changes in their children's personality until something REALLY BIG happens. Sometimes some things are easier too see from far away than from close proximity. Perhaps, Main's parents were so overjoyed with their precious little girl seemingly getting better that they didn't care. Or they did notice but didn't want to admit it to themselves that there is something wrong. Adults tend to do the last one a lot.
I tried out the anime but her psychotic obsession with books kinda threw me off. From the moment she woke up she acts like she's dying of thirst in the desert. I thought to give it a second chance since everyone's showering it in praise, but I was groaning every time she said "book." It annoyed me so much that I didn't even finish the first episode.
Benersan the Bread i totally agree with you. I watched 1-3 episodes just i was eating and had nothing to watch. However after 3rd episode i get curious and start reading LN. In 2 days i finished 4 vols.
@@BenersantheBread I completely understand : I myself had a false start with the novel, finding Myne character just a bit too unlikable despite an interesting setup. But honestly just push a bit farther (it goes very fast, at least in the novel) and you'll find that Myne grows up and it becomes really enjoyable. In fact, retrospectively, Myne in the beginning is understandable, if you consider her as a child with a sudden onset of an adult obsessive hobby.
And now to wait for about 5 more years for the series to finish and get translated.... Currently 20 out of an estimated 32 volumes have been published in Japan with a rate of 4 volumes per year. Currently 4 volumes have been translated to English at a rate of 6 volumes per year. So expect the last volume in Japanese to be late 2022 and the last translation mid to late 2024.

Using the current number of published light novels, the number of web novel chapters covered by those light novels, and the total number of web novel chapters available, a reasonable estimate about the size of the finished light novel series can be made.
Actually her family does notice her behaving at odds with her former self, but they are so relieved she didn't die on them and started to get (seemingly) healthier that they are willing to ignore it. Gunther (her father) outright says that when someone else asks him about Main's weirdness... though I'm not sure if it's in volume 1. Could happen later. Besides, sometimes are behaving at odds with their older self after coming out of a coma on occasion. Hell, people don't even have to go through a coma for that. My mother had some issue that made her forget two days and be in a daze for several more and it took a good month for her to go back to normal just from that. And if that happens during the formative years of a child's personality, who knows what that might look like.
"God" wasn't mean to her, at all. It's not a "normal" isekai where only the protagonist is reincarnated. Basically, you can think that everyone in the serie is reincarnated. Myne of course, but also Tully, their parents, Benno, and so on. Everyone is reincarnated. But for a normal reincarnation, when the person is still a child, all their new experiences will overwrite the old persona, and so they will never discover their previous lifes. As the author mentioned, Myne is special, because she is constantly sick. So she's not able to create as much new experiences, and therefore Urano's memories are not overwritten as much. On top of her constant illness, she also has the Devouring/Consuming, and therefore Myne's new conciousness gets slowly erased, leaving the place available for Urano's old persona to resurface. So, Urano coming back to the surface is thanks to Myne both having the Devouring, and being constantly sick. If Myne was healthy, Urano would have just been overwritten like for everyone else.
Honestly, hands down one of my favorites and I am waiting for the next part to be released in full! Right now I am reading the third novel so it will be interesting to see how this arc concludes. It really does feel like a series for bookworms. Best part is Myne is a female protagonist and it's easier for me to connect. No shade towards male protagonist like Lawrence form Spice and Wolf and Kirito from Sword Art Online, but I always find a female protagonist to be the easiest to connect with. ^_^

I agree, Main getting away with showing off knowledge she really shouldn't have and generally behaving in strange ways is a serious contrivance, and I felt similarly about the initial premise of "commoners who suffer from the devouring are left to die on their own" vs "actually, the devouring means you have magical abilities, so you'd be super valuable". If that's the case, rather than letting those valuable resources go to waste, nobles making arrangements with commoner parents whose children show signs of being magically gifted, or just straight-up separating them from their parents by force, would make way more sense in terms of worldbuilding. I feel like the author isn't being all that consistent either with character writing or with lore, so after the first three books the series hasn't really been able to grab me.
Main's parents do notice, and it is mentioned, particularly by Gunther, who says hes just happy she is alive. (Also, bit of a spoiler, Mainv1 actually always was Mainv2 )
its my minor gripe with this series as well. Lutz notices Myne's changes but not her parents. Maybe because Lutz got to experience Myne very mature personality, but her parents have yet to see it. Oto mentioned that Gunther wouldn't have noticed Myne's high intel if he didn't point it out to him
I started watching this series a few days ago, and I am very much enjoying it so far :) if I end up liking it enough, I will definitely look into checking the novels out :)
Good review just 1 little problem. Main's mom is a Dyer not a seamstress, her sister is an apprentice seamstress working under one of the mothers friends.
Superb review. There’s definitely a lot to like in this book. I liked the anime but the books has definitely filled in a lot. I like the slice of life start, I’ll definitely be carrying on reading it.
yeah, this is a slow paced, and maybe at times bit to slow. I suppose i'm mostly just annoyed i have to wait many month for each new book TT_TT But I think there is something to say about the passing. still tho, when you really look at what is its got it all. idk, how can i find anything to criticize in a show i love so much, all i can say for sure is that this is what a well writen fantazy world looks like. Could this fantazy world be better/improved. Yes, but so could any world. I have to wait to see how the story ends before i can tell you if this is literal perfection or not, but it is safe to say there's a lot of fantastic elements to this that really takes you by surprise.
I think the slow start is actually really important for this series. It gives your understanding of how the world works a huge boost. (Spoilers below) In some novels it'll often say "A commoner/average person could never hope to see magic like this" or something along those lines. Here we have read what, 6 books before we actually see magic the first time, while we now that magic exists slightly earlier, it is made absolutely clear to the reader that it is not something most people ever see. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the series will handle the academy, but I'm guessing that's still 7 or so books away, but the fact that this books shows us different lives and perspectives from the same world is absolutely amazing.
yes indeed, the slow intro to magic is really important for 2 reasons 1: Magic is overrated, we seen magic so much and yet we belive magic is what we come for in fantasy, but no, magic is icing on the cake. but without great characters to wield that magic and fight with it, it means nothing. 2: having the slow build up means that we get a real sense of scale, when we first see the kinghts battel a huge living tree, we like "wow, thats shits scarry" but in other storys that tree would just be something like a random monster encounter at adventure start. and we wont feel like its that dangreous becuse we alrady know magic wil solve it. In other words, to get a feel of how spectacula magic is, you first need to show how life for the characters are without it. Like Mynes starts out with having a staircase be what leaves her out of breath, and simple sickness treating her life. when you contrast that with beast big enough to kill her with one wrong move you things become a lot more exciting. Also 2.2 overuse of powers is what makes powers feel less powerful, its why One Piece still have epic battels with less than 10% of what other shows consider to be powerful. being powerfull is about contrast, not scale.
I'm of the opinion that people misinterpret what happens to the "original" Myne ... I don't actually think there is an "original" Myne. I think Urano's soul/spirit was reincarnated as Myne, but like most reincarnated people, her past life knowledge was locked away ... until the devouring ate away at everything that made the little girl who had grown up sickly and somewhat isolated. With the child's under-developed consciousness in the process of being consumed, that left an emptiness for Urano's essence to fill in (thus the "handing off" moment when she heard a voice crying for help and fading). It doesn't actually change anything, nor does it mean the original personality isn't gone and replaced by the Urano personality, but that's how I interpret the opening of the story. Also, seconding what Sarah Gale said ... the family makes multiple comments about how different and weird she suddenly is early in the story ... Turi even gets upset that Myne is better than her at something. It's not enough for them to get over-excited about (in my opinion) because she KEEPS screwing up and KEEPS being selfish and KEEPS getting sick -- THOSE aspects slowly change even as she keeps coming up with outrageous ideas. And they get told by people they don't really see her interact with that she's smart and can survive using that intelligence alone -- they never see how unusual those interactions are, the way Lutz does, until what happens at the church, and then it's basically spoon-fed to them that their daughter is something special and uncanny and probably always has been. Also, by the time Lutz figures out that something's not right, he's spent more time actually interacting with Myne, and watching her interact with others, than her family probably ever has. And he's the ONLY ONE who figures it out. The other guy cheated. So I think they actually did a good job covering the issues of her changed personality and surprising knowledge and why the family didn't have her burned at the stake.
there is also when Effa was at the well with the other wives, her neighbors point out how much the Urano persona is like Gunter so the new persona isn't out of place in the family
Myne is an anti Over powering Lead character - her initially strength is having a educated mind and her initial weakness is her naivety about social relationship
when i first seen the anime of the Ascendance of a Bookworm, i immediately read the manga (which is close to ending the part 1 of the LN), then moved on to the LN version and blitzed my way to part 4 volume 1(chinese translated btw). i have to honestly say that there are parts of the chapters make me laugh and there's also several chapters makes me cry (part 1 book 3). ain't going to spoil for the LN part 2 (except part 2 volume 1) onwards due to english translation is not officially out yet
The anime & novels complement each other nicely, the former got me into the latter. The Manga is pretty good too, it's a toss-up for me whether the end of the family talk is more heartbreaking in the anime (#11) or in the Manga (#27).
Well I'm don't actually care if there is not any supernatural things here.. The things I'm looking for was, what she gonna make a change to that new world with her knowledge of book she has.. I thought it was like dr stone.. But it seems start to a little off from that path I guess..
Her mother and sister actually do notice the change but when her mother consulted her father he said he doesn't care as long as she is not sick in bed and her mother agreed. They dropped that talk afterwards. Also, her mother noticed how her eyes change when she uses magic but didn't confront her about that too until they were told about it. I guess she is just that kind of a person. Their lives are just too different from ours more like our world when it was normal for people to die by influenza and such and they think about just surviving much more than us.
And he Neighbours point out Myne behaves so much like Gunther when he was little, after all he two gothimself an apprenticeship with out the help of his woldcarver father
Does anyone know which chapter I can find the names of dates and seasons? I don’t remember which chapters they were in. I wanted to write a review on the world building for a school project. I remember they mentioned what dates are called in a baptism sentence, but I don’t remember if it was in context to takling to Otto, making hair ornaments for Turi, selling them to Frida, waking up from fainting under her own baptism or any else. I am not quite sure if you do take requests, or if it fits your style, but I would have a personal one in mind that I couldn´t find on your channel as of yet that I would be very interested in and think that the timing would be all but perfect to look at if you want to. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) seems to be getting a third anime season but is to my knowledge based on light novel material by Wataru Watari. Due to it not being fully released or at least not fully translated I didn´t yet want to pick it up myself as an unfinished story in bookform is leaving me quite frustrated, which is also true for watching animes but in reading form I find that to hold true even more so. In another comment I mentioned the protagonist of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash to be one of my most liked main characters but that holds true even more so for Hachiman from this series. Now I realize that such a strong personality type with his own quirks and due to his nature of being, inner contradictions can be quite hard to read for others, I actually consider Oregairu my favourite anime, although not by overall presentable quality but for me personally. I just very recently found out about being an INFJ personality type by the Myers-Briggs typesetting, a fact that sounds insiginificant to most but was actually the most beautiful gift I could receive after suffering through lifelong soul loneliness, misunderstandings and inner contradictions that seperated me literally from my own feelings for the majority of my life and lead to some deeprooted problems with depression and anxiety and...you get the idea. For other types this is a mere means to identify themselves and take it as an extra informationpiece (although I can recommend the 16 personality type to literally everyone who seeks deeper understanding of themselves and the ones around them), but for the INFJ as one of the rarest, or more so even the rarest personality type, that loneliness and those inner contradictions are almost a design by nature itself for us as long as we are not aware of that information. And that knowledge on a very holistic level solved so many issues in my life, in a way gave me a sense of purpose and belonging in this world that I literally could have missed easily until I would´ve died if I didn´t stumble accross that discovery. Hmm, well too much info...how this relates to my personal request is that quite frankly as sad as it sounds, I identify Hachiman quite strongly as an INFJ character infact for those past five years I actually considered him a more functioning version of myself (that´s rather sad I guess as I don´t have two sweet girls fighting over me nor a helpful parental teacher figure but signifies the meaning this anime holds for me despite the romcom setting), and as this personality type is so rare you could have guessed it, he is literally one of only three characters in anime that I can see displaying that mindset (the other being the MC of Grimgar and to a lesser degree the MC from 3-gatsu no lion) he is the one that displays those personality traits the strongest. Well so my question is if you would actually do me the favor and review the lightnovel parts that are out already to give me an overview of how they are holding up compared to the anime and shed some more awareness for that little gem I hold so dearly. Obviously that goes only if it fits your personal style and sounds interesting to you as well.

I really enjoyed the anime adaption of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU but currently I haven't read the light novels and don't own them either so it may be a while before I review the series. Once I've read the series though I will definitely review it.

The more I think about it, I guess Shield Hero does display these traits to some degree as well, overall the categorization of characters by personality type is very imprecise, but moreso I feel that with him he often gets thrown around to jump wildly in his thoughts and actions due to trauma but also in a general sense its an interesting angle to look at light novel characters from that angle in terms of writing style and skill of the author. A lot of MCs seem to be more blank slates with vague heroic characteristics at display that prevail to appeal to the masses rather than letting them form out within the stories to become "actual" characters with facettes and depth to them. Quite frankly I would wonder how you see that, given that you have much more expertise in light novel material than I do. But yeah regarding the Oregairu suggestion it more came to mind because I remembered you doing pieces related to anime events like with the Shield Hero controversy and I remembered Season 3 having been announced for sometime 2020 so I guess there´ll be plenty of time anyways, but yeah thanks for looking at it.

This is a really poor review. As a Japanese audience, who actually read the whole series, I have a different take. If you've read the series, you'll know that the story goes way beyond bookmaking and dive into world of magic and aristocracy politics. Some mixture of Harry Potter school life/mystery maybe that's just me being Japanese. I really enjoyed the novel and wholeheartedly recommend it. Also, I really recommend reading it in Japanese because unlike many recent novels that have their start online, Kazuki writes well. Her writing does not use awkward speech or overuse references to other anime or comic books.
