Always keep in mind that pretty much every person that's gotten into an accident from a poor emerge, overtake or turn probably thought it would probably be fine. Few people who get into collisions actually think that it will happen before making the manoeuvre that helps cause it.

It's pretty clear now that no-one is afraid of being caught by the police for minor traffic infringements. The few traffic police left after the downsizing over the last 30 years (replaced by cameras) either don't care or are too busy with more serious crimes. Which is a shame, since most big crimes begin with small ones and enforcing small laws does have a knock-on effect.

People get away with it, because even when there is a police officer in a marked car, they don't do anything! Seen them so many times do sweet FA when I've seen dangerous driving.
@Perseus7567
@Perseus7567 3 месяца назад
@@BintyMcFrazzles That's because of another branch of Government doing jack: the Crown Prosecution Service. There's not really much point in charging anyone when the CPS keeps throwing all the cases out because they can't be bothered to prosecute. It's a trickle down effect from higher up the chain, unfortunately the police get all the stick for it, and not just their part of the stick, because they're the public-facing obvious target for people's anger. You can see it on cop TV shows even. Like Traffic Cops or Road Wars or whatever is on now. The police arrest the people on those shows, then at the end the Narrator goes "The CPS rejected the case" or, even worse, "the criminal got a sentence of 1 day suspended sentence" or some other BS light sentence. The Courts System is failing, and it's making everything else fail.

@@aveekbh I think both are a valid point. I noticed he went as soon as those other lights went green, but it may have been a coincidence and he'd just confirmed the bridge height was OK and decided to go at the same time. I'm also not sure how the bridges work over there. Where I am all bridges are a minimum height or else they have clear signange. We still have trucks hitting low bridges, but they're clearly marked. So here if it isn't marked and you're under "regular" height, you have no concerns, but that may not be the case in the UK.

That clip at 4:54 is a common occurrence for us bus drivers. people see a bus and want to get ahead of it, even if they're not even going to travel in the same direction. I had a car jump out of a junction right in front of the nose of my bus just to go the other direction (completely crossing my path). I had to emergency brake. luckily I had no passengers on, otherwise somebody could have been seriously injured. the mentality of "I must go before the bus" is horrifically dangerous.

I assume that police van didn't see the driver, but it was also possible that the van was on its way to a more serious incident. Not all police officers are trained to go around with lights and sirens, but are still expected to attend calls. As you can expect, this is mostly down to a lack of funds to not only hire enough officers but also to provide further training once they are hired (like advanced driving courses etc.)

@@andyalder7910 Whether a "basic driver" gets any practical assessment beyond a driving licence and eyesight check is a matter of policy for individual forces. Really like your style of teaching. Yes, you tell them off when they dont get it right, but equally when they do well you are on it and giving credit where deserved. That moment at about 10:00 is a tricky junction for any driver, let alone a learner. The T junction is blocked by parked cars and it is possible to have a car jump out on you (I assume if you cant see them, they cant see you). Your pupil was driving at a nice speed and was obvioulsy ready to take action if and when needed, which she did. Nice job of teching there.

I passed my test first time in May, 1966 in a driving school car. After the paperwork, my instructor drove me to my house. I was reminded of this by the view here of Jordan after his test. (Well done, Jordan.) My question is, why do instructors drive newly qualified drivers? Do they think we are about to go "demob happy" and cause accidents? Are the cars only insured for pre-test learners? Do the instructors think that they lose authority when their pupils pass their test? I'd like to know the official explanation.
@15bit62
@15bit62 4 месяца назад
It's cos the person who just passed is probably coming down from an adrenaline high and in the best case is at well below 100% attention, and in the worst case might become light-headed and/or faint. When i got home after passing my test (dropped off by the instructor), the first thing i did was spill coffee all over the pass certificate cos i was physically weak and shaking a bit.

It is all about emotions and it doesn’t matter if it is a pass or fail, the instructor will drive the pupil to where they need to go If it is a fail, the pupil will feel low and only thinking about the failure, what went wrong and why? Why did I fail? This potentially leads to a lack of concentration on the road If it is a pass, congratulations 👍 however you are on a high and so full of happy emotion that you potentially wont concentrate on the road ahead when driving The key point in both is the potential lack of concentration, all caused by emotional stress and exaggerated by adrenaline 👍 Insurance wise there is no issue as the vehicle and instructor should already be insured to have anybody (license and vision permitting) in the drivers seat under tuition

Your training teaches much more than simple car control and high way code / manners. You effectively pass on a very observant advanced technique and skill needed in traffic clogged up with drivers not paying attention anymore. I think every driver should be re- examined every 5 years and HGV every 2- 3 years.( medical, eye, hazard testing)
@TheRip72
@TheRip72 4 месяца назад
I hear lots of negativity towards re-tests, (lack of examiners, long waits for tests) but I believe that, if managed correctly, these can all be addressed. The real reason for the negativity is that many drivers know they would fail because they are poor & really don't care. The legislation would be unlikely to be introduced because it would be a huge vote-loser for any government who introduces it.

I support this 100%. And, for what it's worth, I passed my test 48 years ago, but I see so many who have not kept up with modern signage, or kept their roadcraft skills up to date (if they ever had any). I agree - the barrier is the political will - selling safer roads to people by making them recognise their deficiencies and then do something about it is never going to be a vote winner.

I bet the rising insurance costs at some point will require some stricter assessment of the risk= the private driver. In our company, [ self insured company] we get a driving assessment every year ( internal company driving trainers / assessors / HGV). I did medical examinations of professional drivers and for Dvla before. But it should be done by GP who has access to ALL MEDICAL NOTES of applicants. On the first clip with the on-coming cars seemingly jumping a red light - it is possible their lights were still green. I've seen a few junctions where the lights in the opposite direction don't turn red at the same time. Although if that junction is a regular haunt for Ashley he might be more familiar with the light phasing there.

I was told, many years ago, (and I can't vouch for the accuracy) that causing another road user to change speed or direction was basically the way to define "driving without due care and attention".

So for the 4 S's. What if you are trying to turn left right they have to stop and wait for me to find a gap to get on to the correct side of the road. But if I continued to wait and traffic backed up behind me I would then be making the people behind me swear because I'm waiting for a gap on both sides of the road before going. Which could take upwards of 5-10 minutes in rush hour traffic.

Cutting the corners of junctions is commonplace here. As someone in the side road approaching the stop or give way line, you need to be checking to the left for people who are about to swing across from the other road.

Hi Ash, I recently bought my first manual car and I'm struggling a bit in a few areas, mainly hill starting and slowing down for a turn when in a higher gear. Could you consider making a video on manual driving with a camera showing your foot work? I understand there are other channels that have made videos on the subject but none come close explaining things in as much detail as you. No worries if you can't fit it into your pipeline. Thank you!

With the clip at around 7:40 with the Audi using the left-turn lane to go straight on, it is clearly a common trick at this junction - as Ashley predicted it happening. It seemed that the majority of the traffic in the right lane were turning right, so drivers in the left lane are hedging their bets that hardly anyone is going straight on (or will just be stuck in a queue of right-turners), so can pull off the cheeky move without too much drama. So it does raise the question about whether the lane markings are really suitable for that junction. Maybe the left-lane should be left and straight-on, and the right-lane should be right-only?

I've always wondered if corner cutting was against the highway code? Personally I do it sometimes but only on junctions where you can see 100% that there is nothing coming or could possibly be coming. Sadly this simple logic seems to evade a lot of drivers and therefore makes it into my top three pet peeves.

00:10, if this is going near side to near side it entices traffic behind to jump the lights. If you go half way across the junction the traffic behind can back space for oncoming traffic to turn. I also think offside to offside gives better visibility, problem is when one driver goes offside to offside and the oncoming driver goes nearside to nearside. 2:10, good example of rubber necking. 9.21, why honk the horn, do we know what is in front of the lorry or was the honk for pedestrians?

Ashley what's your take on people overtaking and doing 30-40mph on 20mph roads? I'm a fairly new driver so I stick to the speed limits but there's one stretch of road that's 20mph and people seem to bomb down it and get angry at me for doing the 20mph limit, I mean I get it 20mph is so slow but, worth breaking the law? No deterrant I guess.

Personally at 1:40 I would have checked my mirrors and not moved off at all. I think you were looking at your radio maybe? I think it just shows how easy it can be to be distracted from driving, even in a minor way. You were clearly in control and switched on, just saying there might be room to improve? That being said, once you had seen them you held back. Cyclist clearly had a death wish though. End of the day I would much rather play it safe than risk anything. Another great video Ashley

Not sure about the 4 Ss. On busy roads, sometimes you have to move in from a junction even if someone has to slow down a bit or you never get out. I never get upset if someone does this. Also, if someone was out of sight when you moved into a lane, then appears moving rapidly, it is their responsibility to slow down as needed - they need to be able to stop in the space the can see, so there should never be a problem. Theoretically. And obviously you need to be able to move into a road where there appears to be no traffic.
