My new Ashford Elizabeth Spinning Wheel I picked up today. It is used but looks nearly new. It does not look like it was used much at all. I got it for a short song and quite pleased with the wheel. It is my 3rd Ashford wheel. I have two Traditional wheels and now the Elizabeth. This is not the limited edition Elizabeth 30" Production wheel. I would love one of those. This one is the smoothest wheel so far. Even nicer than the traditional wheels I own. If you are in the market for a wheel be ready to hunt FB Market place. If you hunt long enough you will find good deals but be sure you are buying an actual working spinning wheel. If I sell a wheel I will actually do a video showing the wheel working. There are fake wheels on the market so steer well clear of them. If the person has not used it and knows nothing about it it is likely a fake but you can find a spinning site on FB and ask before you part with your hard earned money. I found one of my wheels on eBay, another locally on Craigs List before CL sorta died and the others on FB Market Place. I have had two wheels given to me and I donated the fixed wheels to the Flax people near me. They gave them to me but were not working. I fixed them and spent my own money to fix them then gave them back to be sold. It was my donation to the cause of flax.
I now have enough wheels at the studio for people to use while I teach them how to spin. So if you don't have your own wheel you can borrow one at the studio while you learn and maybe we can help you find a good low cost working wheel for your first wheel. You can learn on an Irish Tension wheel, and two of the Ashford Traditional wheels can be used as Scotch Tension and Double Drive so you get a good hands on for all three. Using a double drive is not difficult as some may think. They are easy to use and easy to adjust.

I think I need to get me a double-drive Saxony like your steal-of-a-deal Elizabeth! :) I currently have a 1975-ish Ashford Tradi in great shape but with a problem that I can't seem to figured out. I'm a retired, new spinner and while practicing I have to completely back-off the scotch tension in order to be able to have a soft take-up and also be able to pull the leader back out. Zero tension. Is that normal? Great videos! Learn a lot!

When using Scotch Tension it can be difficult to adjust super fine. It is easier than with Irish Tension which I also have. The weight of the bobbin and the rotational speed helps keep tension and can if not careful pull out of your hand or pull your fiber apart before you get a good twist so it is normal. As for getting a DD wheel? No need. Just order a double drive flyer for your Ashford and get some DD bobbins which are actually used for both Scotch and DD setups. It is as easy as swapping out the flyer and I use a DD setup on two of my Ashfords and both spin super nice. I would do that vs spending money another wheel. One wheel to do both is in my opinion a good deal. If you can, hunt for a DD flyer for your ashford. Happy to help. I also have a face book page. fb.me/naturesyarn

@@abittwisted Ashford used to made a conversion kit from single to double drive for their Traditionals and Travellers, but no longer make them. I'm interested to see that you say just buying a double drive flyer and DD bobbins is all you need to make the conversion. I've seen RU-vid videos indicating that the mother-of-all needed alteration for the conversion to work properly. Did you find you needed to do this?

@@blandynawilliams203 The Woolery still has DD Flyers and Bobbins. The Ashford DD is also usable as a single drive Scotch tension setup. Depending upon how old your wheel is you may need to modify the mother of all to work with your wheel. It is not difficult but does require some drilling and re-positioning the mother of all. My Ashford Traditional is old and did require an adaptation to utilize my first newer Woolee Winder that was only Scotch Tension. When I wanted to use the old flyer I'd have to revert back to the original position. I did not do a video on this adaptation. So now that my wheel has been adapted, I have no issues with different and newer flyers. The Spindle attachment fits both old and new wheels if you wanted to get your hands on a spindle. It is a bit tricky but it does work. This comment above is in reference to my traditional. I do not know if a new DD Flyer will work on an old Elizabeth.

I just purchased a very similar style wheel. I do not quite know how to get the set up correct. I would love a zoom class with you

I can do that.

My wheel arm that connected to the pedal is gone… I tried to us a golf pin but the pin broke as it came down… and the whole set needs cleaning.. what do you suggest to use…

@@carolecole4295 So I believe you are talking about the footman arm. That connects the treadle to the wheel. You can use as a replacement a strong twine for a temporary connection. Be sure the treadle does not touch the floor in its lowest position but be sure it is just a bit off the floor so you get full rotation. A string will pull the wheel around and you give enough energy so the wheel will spin around past the top to begin the next pull. Even wheels with sticks will be a pull and not both push and pull. The weight and rotation of the wheel (a flywheel) will continue spinning beyond the top if you put in enough energy. Go to my fb.me/naturesyarn and message me and send an image of your wheel and where you are talking about.

What type of roving did you use?
@abittwisted

Ihave no idea. This was a big bunch of wool roving a friend gave me. It is decent quality and pre-drafts well and spins well. What kind of wool? No clue. Just thought I'd use it for this demo. I may eventually spin it into some nice yarn for knitting.
