It's been awhile since I've put out a Driving Fail of my own. In one of these clips the driver behind me blames the Driving School vehicle for their own mistake, and I also see the aftermath of a big collision in the car park!

Ex-police officer here - the idea of going through an ATS system without lights or sirens gives me shivers. There's no two ways about it - the ambulance driver cocked up. From what I've seen though to me it isn't an emergency ambulance either.

@@notmenotme614 Three years ago I was walking up to the local shops with my two year old nephew - I used to look after him one day a week. So, we're crossing the road at a green man, and a car comes round the corner, straight through a red light and comes close enough to us that I managed to kick the car, while shouting, "it's a fucking green man". I'd never sworn in front of my nephew, but I got such a fright I lost it. So, I watched the car travel about 100 metres up the road and pull in at a Church/Church Hall. I walked up to the car, but it was empty. I've always got a pen on me, so I'm looking for a piece of paper to write an angry note, and the driver walks out of the Church Hall - he'd been dropping his daughter off at a dance class. He sees me and immediately knows what's up, and I'm fuming, (I'm not a big guy - 6' tall with a shaved head, so to some I've got an aggressive demeanor) so he starts apologising profusely. I let him know, in no uncertain terms, that I'm not happy - bad enough nearly hitting me, but my very precious two year old nephew....no way. He explains that he was dropping off his daughter and his mind wasn't in the right place - I told him that I was considering calling the police to have him breathalysed, however, I couldn't believe that he'd drink and drive with his daughter in the car, so I was prepared to give him a pass - I don't think that he had been drinking - I was just letting him know that I wasn't happy. Anyway, that was that..... I didn't mention this to my sister, (his Mum) - didn't see the point. About three weeks later I saw my sister, and she says, "you'll never believe what happened last night....I'm getting dinner ready with Gary, and Aidan (nephew) is just entertaining himself in the living room, when all of a sudden he shouts out...."fucking green man" at the top of his voice...clear...as...day, with perfect pronunciation.." She said that she had to close the door as her and her husband tried to stifle the laughter, as the wee nephew just carries on playing with blocks or whatever. She wasn't accusing me of anything...in fact she had no idea where he'd heard this phrase, but he'd heard it somewhere. I, very sheepishly, told her that he'd picked it up from me, and I had to explain that some clown had shot a red light, nearly hitting her precious wee boy and his uncle. Anyway, that's a IMHO funny red light story - unfortunately many of them aren't so funny 🚦⛔✌️

I think letting the lorry out was a bit over courteous and even if the driver knew what you were doing it's the kind of unexpected event that can cause confusion to other road users. You had a clear road in front and traffic behind you, how does it help the flow of traffic for you to stop them all unexpectedly? Edit: Just to add to this as well, I was very nearly rear ended because a driver in front of me decided to stop and let out a load of vans from a council depot. Not really the fault of the driver that stopped, but the event wouldn't have happened if he hadn't stopped
@PedroConejo1939

Given that the road ahead was closed, there was a junction and there was a wagon starting to pull out, a lot more caution should have been exercised by the overtaker. He didn't even _think_ about what was going on but immediately went into the overtake. Not something that would be wise in a car let alone an artic.

We "normal" drivers are gobsmacked when someone jumps a red, or uses the left lane to go right etc. But the drivers that do this stuff don't give it a moment's conscious thought, so long as it doesn't end in a collision and they don't get caught. To them it's just a part of everyday driving, and they've forgotten about it the second it's behind them - assuming they even gave it any thought in the first place.
@raithrover1976
@raithrover1976 3 года назад
It's possible that the taxi driver was looking at the second set of lights, which were on green and missed the fact that there was a red light a few yards before it. As Ashley said, that's why you should always have a look, even when your lights are on green.

I have a simple rule when I get tailgated: If you don't want your safe braking distance, I'll include it in mine; if you get even closer, I'll simply increase my distance to the vehicle in front. Some of the worst offenders are wagon and van drivers because they can see over a mere car but there's reasons that people have to brake that are not always visible directly in front of them. I've always tried to give HGV drivers respect and room but as with every other form of transport, there aren't half some tits among them.
@jacintarene_
@jacintarene_ 3 года назад
I do this when the person in front of me is tailgating the person in front of them. Increase the distance as I know they couldn’t slow down progressively and only slow abruptly and sporadicly, I leave a little more room.

Think the lorry one was probably them misinterpreting what you were doing _and_ focusing on that. So, thought you were going to park, and decided to go round you without taking proper notice of the other lorry. Perhaps stopping beside the open space instead of short of it would've helped? Shouldn't have passed you there anyway though I reckon.
@owyn768
@owyn768 3 года назад
Stopping on the road when you have right of way to let someone out is, in my view, bad practice. If you have right of way then use it, everyone knows rules so trying to unilaterally swap them on the fly is confusing and can be dangerous. Example, the lorry in the clip, you were stopped on the road with a left hand indicate on, as far as the lorry behind knows you could be stopping for a while. If you'd have used your right of way, you would have turned left, the lorry behind carried on and the lorry emerging would have waited their turn, exactly as everyone expected-you were the only one in that situation that knew you were giving up your right of way.

'Coz : if you would have kept moving, he most likely would have stayed in lane ...Senseless too, 'coz you turned left anyway, so you had hardly any influence on the turning lorry's possible actions and the traffic was normal, so an occasion to enter the road would occur soon enough for the lorrydriver...(In heavy, crawling bumper to bumper traffic this would have made more sense, but then also only if you would have kept going straight on the road)...

Clip 4, with the truck overtake, could he have thought you were stopping? You turned left, into the road the other truck emerged from, were you already signalling? If the left signal was on, and you stopped, the following truck can assume that's where you intend to stay, regardless of the space ahead. With a clear road ahead, he was not willing to wait while you parked, especially if you were displaying the L plates or any learner car livery. He might have been getting short of driving time. Could of course, have just been impatience. Disappointing that he apparently hadn't noticed his fellow truck driver waiting to emerge.

If they're tailgating you, they're probably at least concentrating on being a tit and are not going to do as much damage as the idiot miles behind you, watching Die Hard, who slams into stopped traffic at 56 mph. They're the ones to worry about and that's why it's a good idea to leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front if you ever have to stop on in a live lane on a motorway or dual-carriageway - and to keep an eagle eye on your mirrors.

If I remember correctly, the average cost of a fatal road traffic collision is about a £1,000,000 after the investigation, hospital treatment and inquest, let alone the human cost. Ashley why did you even stop if you were turning left anyway, he’s a professional driver he doesn’t need Samaritans to assist him to come out of a junction, what he needs is you not to confuse anybody and go about your business and let him. Go about his, why potentially bring a main road to a standstill to allow someone out of a side road when he had a much better view of the situation than you did ( he can see over the top of most vehicles you cannot, just get round the corner and let him sort it out) car drivers do this all the time they think they’re helping when inevitability they cause more confusion than they help, the right thing to do is you sort yourself out and he’ll sort himself out ( he’s a professional )

In all fairness to the Audi parked on the crossing, I would have been a bit annoyed because it looked like there was enough room for you and him to clear (maybe the cam perspective is lying to me again) but you left quite a large gap. Even though it would have been my fault to park on the crossing, moving forward a little would have been nice. I wouldn't have made a big deal though. Actually, I wouldn't have been in that position anyway thinking about it 😁 But maybe he was annoyed not because of his mistake but how you "hung him out to dry" when you could of helped him perhaps?

I'm curious. During you use of the Volvo, did you notice other drivers reacting differently to you, than they do when you're in your BMW? On traffic lights. I'm always hearing excuses for why someone would "go through a red" (or amber for that matter) or, "anticipating the green" and usually goes a bit like this "Oh, yes, I know those lights, and I know there's a few seconds when all the lights are at red, so it's quite safe". Or, "There's always a short period where no one's going anywhere, and from that, I know when the lights are about to go green for me, so I know I can get away a bit sooner" - Absolutely, NO, NO, NO! The "All at red" period is there for safety, and gives the slowest vehicle time to clear the junction (take that to mean a bicycle, or horse, or tractor etc), and it pains me to say it, but the worst offender are usually cyclist, but delivery drivers and private hire taxis are almost as bad. There at 0:50 is a first class example of what I see on almost every trip, and it's not just pedestrian crossings, but road openings, entrances to business units, and even emergency services' entrances. It's uncalled for, unnecessary and gains them nothing in the end, except a potential fine for obstructing an emergency vehicle. At 1:51 Well, that's anybody's guess. I'd guess someone was paying attention, be that the car you saw, or the vehicle in front, which may have reversed to let someone out of that avenue. It's apparent that the other vehicle was bigger and heavier (that's the kind of damage inflicted by an HGV). Failing that, that little car was travelling way too fast for a car park? At 2:29 Absolutely, take nothing for granted, always look both ways, and assume other drivers have absolutely no idea of the rules! At 3:10 The lorry behind misread a lot! He may have thought you were parking, or he may have thought you were 'hanging back' to give the emerging lorry room to pass, and thought "sod this, I have 9 more drops today" and assumed that the emerging lorry would see him, and anticipate what he was going to do, but, it's bang out of order to overtake on the approach to a road junction. His mind might also have already been up to the roadworks, long before his lorry! At 3:55 The Range Rover driver probably thought "Aargh, old fart's Volvo, I have to get away first or I'll be stuck behind it for miles!" - I kid you not, as a Volvo driver, I get that kind behaviour all the time. It goes with the territory of Volvo ownership. I didn't see that as much when I drove Fords! But then, the Range Rover leans heavily under acceleration, continues to accelerate away, and then runs a red light. I think they may have had other issues as well? At 5:00 It's just inexcusable, and she probably planned all along to do her make up in "That quiet bit where the traffic's always queueing for ages" - It saves ten minutes, don't you know! But it's illegal, every bit as much as using your phone while driving. A few years back, I had a similarly distracted youngster hanging off my rear bumper, at 60mph! on the A63, Selby Bypass, who wouldn't back off at any price. So I planned my own surprise for that driver - I took a high speed left into the lay-by (in one end, and out of the other) and regained the road behind them. Their sudden swerve and frantic braking led me to conclude that whatever they were doing, they were using the rear end of my car as a reference, a guide if you like, to hang onto and follow in their peripheral vision. As soon as I disappeared from view, they were bolloxed, with no reference to guide them, and braked out of sheer panic. At 6:13 Nope, he took the "All at red" dwell period to be safe, and jumped his red signal. At 6:50 Looks like a standard issue courier "I've only got 1 minute and 45 seconds per drop" driver and expects you to know that - Overworked, underpaid, and pushed by penny pinching companies to taking risks on the road. At 7:35 No excuse for that. If blues and twos aren't turned on, emergency vehicles are required to abide by the rules like everyone else, and the penalties for failure to comply are just the same. If there is a medical emergency onboard, say a heart attack patient, ambulances don't necessarily travel at speed, but can still pass traffic lights at red, BUT, they MUST turn on their blues and twos in good time before doing so. At 8:00 Is that somewhere near Edge Hill? It looks familiar! Well that was bang out of order, but do that six times over, and you've saved a minute! - I've often wished I'd been a TO! At 10:15 A "clown on a quad" - We get them over here in rural Yorkshire, all the time. Only certain quads are road legal, some are not! Place that one where you will, but he's not going to last long behaving like that! At 10:45 With you all the way, watched it twice, and spooled back and forth God knows how many times. Quite enjoyed this video - It's just a pity the protagonists made it possible. Think about that for a moment! At 11:00 Traffic lights don't seem to mean much these days, and it's becoming contagious!

3:16 just a very impatient driver. Luckily the truck driver (At the junction) knew what he wanted to do. Conclusion, was a pretty bad overtake. As you should really never overtake when a junction is coming up for vehicles crossing your lane. You'll always have impatient people / drivers and that's what causes misjudgement & unneeded frustration. All i do to combat these situations, is if someone is letting me out from a junction i make sure everyone behind him knows / is patient enough to also wait. If i feel the gap is dangerous or i'd like to wait myself, i'd shake my head. I don't know if this is right or wrong, but it's what keeps me safe & that's all i care about at the end of the day.

3:01 I can see how your position and speed could suggest that you were going to park in that empty space, but I would still say the lorry driver failed to read the situation. Sitting that high over you, he ought to have seen the red sign and cones, and should have realised it was risky overtaking you. The space between your car and the sign was hardly large enough for the lorry to fit. Because there is little space to manoevre about, the driver had to fully commit to the overtake and had to slow down the opposing traffic.

@PedroConejo1939 3 года назад
@@SPTSuperSprinter156 This may be just a matter of not quite understanding what each other is getting at but ambulances (and other emergency vehicles) are only granted exemptions to certain traffic laws *in an emergency* (that can include transporting patients from one hospital site to another). They can't just break traffic laws willy-nilly. One exemption is to treat red traffic lights as give way signs. Since it is most unlikely that this particular type of ambulance would be in an emergency situation without its blue lights on, we can assume that it was not an emergency. If it was being driven in an emergency situation, that vehicle would have been exempted. The balance of probability here is that there was no emergency and so the vehicle was therefore subject to regular traffic laws, which were broken.

My only accident was with a 86 yo women who went through a red on a light controlled merge, long after I had set off from my green. She only appeared beside me, running out of road when he got forward of my blindspot. A fraction of a second of "WTF?" and I braked to allow her to merge in front. Now the lesson here is that when bad situations like this develop, DO NOT forget they can suddenly get worse. So even at about 10mph. The lady did not merge in front of me, but put her left indicator on, looked over her shoulder and drove across both lanes of traffic for a side road. The Audi on my left, missed her by inches, I was less lucky and clipped her rear passenger door. She completely lost control, drove up the pavement, careered through pedestrians as they jumped out of the way and only managed to find the brake pedal again when she was facing a brick wall and a cash machine. Then I made my second mistake. Assuming at the time it was very obvious what happened, and not asking the 3 pedrestrians who approached me, including one of the ones that had to jump out of the way, saying "She ran that red, not your fault, that's discraceful.", for their phone number for the insurance. I had no dash cam and the local council lied about who was the data collector for the CCTV, so I wrote to PSNI for subject access, who sent my cheque back telling me it was the council. I wrote the council this time and they responded that the retention on the cameras had already passed and the footage was deleted. So I ended up taking a 50/50. My insurance went from ~£350 to £800 and barely fell for 5 years. It's now, thankfully only £304.

I will comment at 6:45, that the law for stopping at yellow lights in North America is "if you can stop safely, you are required to stop". That being said, I cannot clearly see how hard the van behind you had to brake in this scenario because the zoomed in view distorts the video so much. However, if the van did have to slam on their brakes to avoid rear-ending you, you technically were required to run the lights. Especially with the lack of pedestrians around, I would have gone through.

I have a personal philosophy which stands me in good stead in business, which is that I own everything that happens to, as well as from, me. Situations aren't always my fault, superficially speaking, but down the rabbit hole of cause and effect, there's nearly always something I could have done, given enough foresight - which, to be fair, is sometimes l'esprit de l'escalier - to have saved the situation. People think the 10-5mph limit in carparks is just about pedestrians. The reality is that it is a high traffic area, with many people reversing in and out of spaces, a lot of turning etc. People driving over the pavement, you may save 10-30 seconds or, you risk hitting a person or car, plus everyone who witnessed what you did, thinks you're a massive prick. Chronologically and in a free but probably chaotic style (overseas reactions): #1 .. Yup .. happens to me in East Europe a lot. I am pushed onto crosswalks and bike crossings because some are soo important, rules do not apply to them. And when pedestrians walk over their hoods, leave dents, scratches and muddy footprints, I chuckle. #4 .. Mine is bigger than yours? Over here the use of mobile phones is allowed while behind the wheel ONLY when traffic conditions and circumstances make you stationary (eg. at a red light, at a train crossing, theoretically when a crowd of people pass over a crossing and so forth) ... In reality; everyone keeps going like ox piss over the road, eyes off the road, or just having phones visibly at their ears .. smh #8 .. Guess it is kinda/sorta rule now? Get going, I am ready to be the danger with a trunk loaded with stuff for someone else. People are ready to win 10 seconds where and when they can. For every junction they 'manage', if they can get 10 seconds off.... spare time millionaires, baby! (Let us be honest; if 10 seconds matter constantly, you are always late, you need some time management bull*, not corners to cut) And just a small observation; I estimate not much of a difference in the amount of cars on the roads, yet in the UK, following distance tought and expected is very big/far/forgiving. Over here I get that non-existent following distance from a lorry pulling a barrel of milk at 90 kph. Don't ask me how I did not get a heart attack until now.. What I can do if I can is make sure it is clear, pop a signal to the side of the road, let it blink a couple, take it off, and if the driver takes the hint, he will barge right past me .. I can take my foot off the gas, and thank the for not letting me die. Some have no respect for lawn maintenance .. some for others on the road...

Last week I'd just come off the M6 (N) at J17, where it joins the A556, which in turn gets you on to the M56 (E) towards Manchester. Due to roadworks, it starts at a 30 mph limit but then opens up to 60 mph. About 100 meters before 60 mph sign, the truck directly behind me decides to overtake. Does he honestly think his truck has faster acceleration than my car? When we reached the sign has cab was level with me. I geared down from fourth to second to get maximum power (I don't want to be in a truck's nearside blindspot) and accelerate to the new limit, leaving him for dust, so he slots back in behind me. All because he didn't want to wait 10 seconds to begin accelerating.

Under the Highway Code, the lorry that overtook you had right of way over the other lorry waiting at the giveaway line and the the right of way to overtake the obstruction you caused to the free movement of traffic (an offence in itself, if your wheels actually stopped turning) by stopping. A retired paramedic friend of mine attended an RTA where a car, on a main road, stopped to let another car out of a side road, similar to this video situation. A motorcyclist, on a Honda C90, wrongly guessed that the car was turning into the side road, without signalling, and overtook it. The motorcycle ploughed into the driver's door of the side road car (which had wrongly assumed that all right of way traffic had been stopped), badly injuring the rider. Ambulance & Police attended. My friend heard the driver of the car that had stopped to let out the side road car, telling the copper that the motorcyclist prosecuted for dangerous riding, to which the copper replied, "Did you stop your car dead, thus blocking preventing the movement of following traffic in order to let that car out of the side road??", to which the motorist replied, "Yes!!". The copper then booked him for the offence of obstructing the free movement of traffic on a public road and the side road car driver for failing to obey a give way sign / line thus driving into the path of a vehicle that had right of way. The motorcyclist was within the law in overtaking the obstructive car and was the only one innocent one involved and the only one seriously injured. Over the years I've quizzed a few traffic cops abut this accident scenario and the law regarding letting people out of side roads. One stated that when drivers act courteously, the Highway Code is throw out the window, because it usually causes confusion and accidents, in his experience. A few pointed out that you may slow down to let somebody out, but it is illegal to actually stop you wheels from turning (coming to a dead stop) because your vehicle has become an illegal obstruction on the highway. As for pulling out over a give way or stop line from a side road, all traffic, even vehicles overtaking the obstructing or slowing vehicle, that has let you out of the side road, still have legal right of way over your vehicle. I'm extremely cautious when pulling out in this scenario and treat it like pulling out with a compromised view of traffic scenario.

I almost always watch until the end of the videos because 1. I'm always learning and 2. I love seeing a part of the world I might not be able to visit. I really appreciate the older architecture! ❤️

For number four, I probably wouldn’t have indicated as it did suggest you were going to park. Would have indicated after you pulled forward again.

"Blame others for your mistake" I see this every single day. In fact I saw it driving home less than an hour ago... I was driving down a narrow road with parked cars. One guy decides to open his car door and step out of his car as I was driving past him. What was he thinking? There was no car behind me, he only had to wait 2 seconds for it to be safe to step out of his car. Yet he looked at me like it was my fault he almost got run over and his car door ripped off. Why am I surrounded by idiots? You're twice the man for openly admitting your own faults.

In the clip where you stopped to let the lorry out (#4) the exiting lorry's indicator was quite dim. (It was very visible head-on.) So maybe the lorry needs a new indicator bulb? It's also very low down so may have been obscured by the car that turned left at 3:16. So maybe the lorry driver behind you didn't see it. In the case of the ambulance running the red light, the road was wet, so stopping distances are extended and the driver would have had to make their decision to stop or proceed much earlier than normal. Note that an ambulance can weigh up to 5 tonnes.

Why do people always blame others for their Mistakes? Because they don’t believe that they have done anything wrong. Scary, I know.

You were indicating left to park in the space I assume. Because if you were really trying to help the emerging truck, you would've used either your hazards or brake lights or indicator right to stop anyone overtaking you! Actually, to get away from a strange driver that's become a hazard to you, I would indeed try to take a shortcut.

3:23 Sometimes, the best way to give someone space is to just go on your merry way. The tanker lorry figured that stopping in that situation will only waste fuel as it will have to switch lanes regardless (see obstacle behind turning lorry), hence, it decided to accelerate and clear the junction. The turning lorry is also the last one in this intersection and has to give way regardless (it's turning right, eh?)

Pity the crossing lights didn’t change, would have been fun watching people walking over the Audi bonnet...

My comment about the lorry clip is that it sounds like you had your indicator on (not incorrectly!!) presumably signalling left. If you left it until after the lorry emerged the one behind probably would have waited?!!

I agree with your commentary, but short of mimeing a prayer symbol, its difficult to tell someone "I have accidentally blocked a walkway, could you please pull forward to I can minimise my negative impact on these pedestrians and I will do better in future."
