Welcome to episode 63 of the Commander's Guild: "Ashling Used Explosion - It's Super Effective!" Every week I go to scryfall.com and randomly select a card, making a budget (under $100) commander deck around it and showcasing a gameplay video of the deck. This week I'm joined by Shawn, Bilal, and Jason.
This week's "random" card (it was actually suggested by BringDaMF Ruckus on Reddit) is Ashling, the Pilgrim who is also the commander. This week we're aiming to blow up the board with our commander and try to do as much damage as possible, hopefully with us taking slightly less than everyone else.

One of the only games I've seen a non-budget Ur-Dragon lose to was against an Ashling deck. The player managed to get lifelink and indestructible on Ashling and then proceeded to curb stomp everything. I wish I had the deck list

another option if you happen to have money or the cards laying around is the Swords of X and Y. in particular the swords that give protection from Red. almost as good as indestructible and Ashling has more power to swing on an empty board

Opal Palace can also compound damage to everything by putting more counters on Ashling when you recast her

That’s a really good suggestion! I didn’t even think about giving Ashling pro red to keep them alive. Thanks!

@kennethreed8485 that’s also a solid suggestion. Being mono red, it doesn’t take away from being able to cast any spells.

If I was on any of those platforms to be able to follow you, I surely would. Very interesting choices to show case when it came to the themes of the deck, love the Basilisk Collar for sure, such a powerful card for equipment. Soul-Scar is an amazing card, that probably (least to my knowledge) doesn't see as much play as it should in EDH. Deck list seems really cool and neat, with some amazing interaction and synergies - than again all the decks I've seen on the channel look like so much fun. Love the upgrade section and the recommendations to what to add and remove. Great choice of opponents this time, Atraxa (outside of your deck) is the one I'm rooting for since I have an Atraxa deck myself. Would like to see maybe the opponents decklist link in the description though, but that just me being greedy lol. I think the idea of a Pioneer deck (or maybe even other formats) would be interesting as well. Great game, congrats to the winner. Thank you for another outstanding content as always, can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. Hope you and everyone is having a great weekend, and see you for the next one. #Roadto250

An idea for when the channel is able to do in person games, maybe a tournament of redemption, where the decks built on the channel that lost, all go into a pool and are randomly drawn to compete in 4 player games, think would be interesting to see a Tournament of Redemption as it were

Thank you! I completely agree that Soul-Scar Mage doesn’t see as much play as it probably should. It can kill indestructible creatures and make threats into harmless creatures. It always over-performs when I see it. I’m hoping to do more diverse deck techs in the future but I just haven’t had the time lately. I do love pioneer though so I’ll probably do that at some point.

Just started playing magic, and even if I have never played commander, I love wacky cards and weird effects, I just watch a bunch of your video and I loved the atogatog deck, don't know if you could do something with this but I had imaginary pet in my collection and I still don't know how someone could play with this

Thanks! I’m glad you like the videos, they’re a ton of fun to make too. As for Imaginary Pet, I’m not sure what to do with it either but I will be happy to make a video around it. I will be honest, though, it might take a little while since I have a bit of a backlog of decks but I will definitely get to it. Thanks again!

I would pair it with Guardian Project (to answer the original inquiry). That way, your hand is always fueled, and that ability will always trigger. Then, you could partner the casting of Imaginary Pet to some damage-dealing aspect, like Impact Tremors or a card like Pandemonium/War Storm Surge, since it is a 4/4. It is also an Illusion, so you could bump up the power/toughness with the Illusion lord. Just my thoughts.
