As a newbie to the Ashtanga practice I must say this is the best video by far. The breaths are not exhaustingly long. I feel I can do this practice everyday. The cues are perfect and so encouraging. This practice has been made accessible to everyone with variations I haven’t seen in other Ashtanga videos. Perfect video David, I hope to one day practice with you in real life. Namaste!

@@gypsealiI also used to practice this every morning many years ago and I can tell that my whole life was completely different. Life got in the way and I lost the recording and that practice. I then attended several courses, classes, yoga holidays, even lived in a yoga ashram for a few weeks a couple of times in India but none of them gave me what following this practice did. My body was much more relaxed, flexible, balanced and stronger. Not only felt so much better physically but mentally also. I do remember that I literally felt my body tensing up when I got stressed and that helped me to be mindful. I have finally managed to turn my life around and practicing with David again and immediately feel the difference. I think my body remembers. I can’t be grateful enough to him for sharing this amazing practice. He was the reason for me getting into yoga 20 years ago. Thank you, David! Love you! ❤

Does anybody know the reason why utthita hasta padangusthasana is difeerent here, though this video was shot in 1995? When was this pose changed into a modern version?
@shlomobaruch
@shlomobaruch 4 года назад
Good question. I’ve wondered the same thing myself. My first guess is that it may be a Sharath thing. Kino was the first Ashtanga that I saw doing the “new” UHP, and although she studied under Guruji, she’s been Sharath’s student since his passing. Having done both versions, I will say that the forward fold does help with bringing the hip down even though I really resist putting in the extra work!
@daffyduck518
@daffyduck518 4 года назад
@@shlomobaruch I don't think that it is a Sharath thing, because on the Pattabhi Jois and 6 students video they are doing the modern version. I guess David is just doing old school here

I love this video. The longer version got me into yoga 15 years ago. I keep coming back to it over the years, but admittedly, this is very long and hard. I'm committed to try this again to help with some long covid issues. Would you recommend to do the entire video (I hardly have time for that)? Any program to get into this to build up? Even the first 13 minutes (actually especially those) are intense! I was thinking to start with 1 set of suriya namaskara A or B, then standing sequence, then on another day the suriya namaskara A or B, followed by primary series. Or is it really supposed to be in one go?

Traditionally yoga asana are practiced one at a time until you get it then you can move on to the next.

The piror comment is correct. Always do the full A and B salutes, and add one pose as a time as you are ready. Better to do it properly and do less than to push, and miss the development and benefits.

@katashley1031
@katashley1031 5 месяцев назад
@@adevore1971yes, David himself said he first did the sun salutes and it was all he could handle, lol. You add one pose at a time and progress very slowly. Generally you only add a new pose when the prior poses are fairly easy for you. The Mysore approach makes it very easy for anyone to start, and it's always at your own pace. 😊

Anytime your breath is too fast or intense to keep doing it through the nose, take a break, slow down, and then return once your breathing is long and deep again. Over time, your heart and lungs will adapt and you won't get out of breath. Always stick to nose breathing, and keep it slow and long

Hi David, the pace of this series seems very fast to me. If I follow my breath, it's about a 10-sec respiration cycle, which is much slower than your video. My intention is to follow along as best I can and learn the sequence so I can perform it on my own at my own pace. Unless there is a reason for the fast pace? Thank you again for the wonderful video!! I had a hard copy of it but misplaced it.

Ashtanga is meant to be vigorous but Mysore style means you practice on your own, and you'd follow your own breath, not someone else's. That helps. One pose at a time and be patient with adding them.
