Four is standard, yes. When everyone has twelve tiles, the dealer takes two upper pieces with one space between (basically tile no. 1 and 5) and then the rest take one more each.

Mahjong is a card game on domino tiles, and the 144 tiles are a deck of cards with their own suits, etc., like a 52-deck. You shuffle the cards, discard, gain, discard until the first person gets the winning hand. Like any card game, the dealer rotates counterclockwise and rolls the dice to determine where the "cut" is. I teach diplomats and ambassadors how to play Mahjong at my work. If you like poker, go, bridge, shogi, you'll love Mahjong. It's simpler than you think.

I LOVE MAHJONG!! I'm Chinese but was adopted by an american family when I was 2, and I live in the US now, but my brother taught english for a year in china and he taught my sisters and I (all of us are Chinese) how to play. I haven't played in years because I kinda forgot how and I don't really have 3 other people to play with since my sisters moved away, but I want to play again. I hate the fake game online where you have to find a pair and try to get rid of all of the tiles

I’m a 75 year old Anglo and was introduced to Mahjong 25 years ago by my Filipina wife. We play Filipino style mahjong and we draw 8 tiles each to speed the game up. Once I played this game for a while I realized the game is just like the card games “gin or gin rummy.” Using tiles & a different terminology. Mahjong is my favorite game!! Have fun!

In Singapore (and Hong Kong, probably) most kids know how to play mahjong by watching their parents play the game. By the time they are in high school or in tertiary education/colleges, some might even invite their friends home to play. These young adults would usually play mahjong especially on Chinese New Year.

It's a joke because most stereotypical families played on a green table for some reason lol
@HanabiraKage
@HanabiraKage 8 лет назад
Tables designed for mahjong are usually green with borders so tiles don't fall off the sides, plus a cushioned top to minimise the noise when tiles are dropped or placed on the table.

Me, my sisters and cousin played this so much recently while the adults watched and gave us pointers. It was funny swapping places since my childhood always involved the grandmas playing and the kids doing their own stuff too :')

Apparently I play a different version of mahjong because we have to use cards with the hands you can play and the suits are cracks (Chinese characters) bamboos, and dots..

I’m Dutch, no Asian heritage at all. My family and I used to play this all the time when I was younger. Now I have my own set and actually thought an Chinese girl how to play, along with others, and it really catches on!

According to a history professor who wrote her PhD thesis about mahjong, there over 40 different "regional" variations of the game (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Thailand, Europe, American (which is COMPLETELY different)) so it can be daunting for non-Asians to learn if they've never been exposed to it.

Filipinos play mahjong too! But a little differently lol the point of the game is still the same but we have 'flowers' which is pretty much like the joker cards

I'm Filipino and mahjong was the thing where adults would play in parties or funerals. A lot of times there would be mahjong parties and we would stay there the whole day.. Food and beverages would be served to the players. And that's where my mom would her the latest gossips.
