“I don’t know how to play piano. All I know is how to play video games.” Making this into a shirt for my Asian brothers and sisters who disappointed their families.
I do figure skating lessons. You’d be surprised how many of my classmates are young Asian kids with their parents coaching them from the sides when practicing.
It would be offensive if they just picked on Asians, but they pick on everyone - British, French, Mexicans, Mormons, Irish, Australians, etc etc etc, so everyone gets a chance to laugh at themselves :)
Because family guy writes jokes about race not racist jokes theirs a thin line but theirs a line. Plenty of white comedians have made successful careers talking about all races.
I dated a Chinese woman, before. As you said, she knew how to play the piano and the violin. Her parents were fairly wealthy, which I didn't learn until later. That didn't matter to me, but it definitely mattered to them.
My friend Mallory is Half Chinese and Half Italian, but looks Chinese. She begged me to come to her Halloween party in straight up yellow face and she dressed in Whiteface! Her Chinese dad laughed so hard!
My family went to China in 1984 and we were taken to see the pandas and turned around and my brother was missing. My brother, who was 10 and had pale blonde hair, had been grabbed by several Chinese families to take pictures with their own kids. They had never seen a kid so pale and with such blonde hair. My parents were frantic, my sister and I thought it was hilarious once we figured out what was going on.
Oh my!! I remember something similar when i was little. We where living in korea at the time. I was 4 and my brother was two. This was like 13 years ago too. My family is very European looking and every other day a random Korean woman would pick either me or my brother up and run with us to show their friends three blocks down. They would yell, "beautiful baby" over and over. I mean to be honest, we arent that cute so i dont know what they ment.😂 they planned to return us but my poor mom who didn't speak korean besides, hello and thank you would frantically run after them. The ladies where nice though, not like they were trying to kidnap us.😂
I believe it. I took my family home to Hawaii and when were comin out of the Honolulu Zoo, a pair of Japanese tourists stopped us (politely) to ask if they could pose for pictures with my baby boy. They were throwing p peace signs and smiling and just so happy to be taking photos next to my boy.
My vietnamese friend always jokes about seeing 16:9, one day he was stopped by german police for passing a red light arguing he couldn't see it because his asian eyes. They believed him.
Family Guy rarely does racist jokes. Their "racist" jokes really poke fun at stereotyping and racism that's why it's funny when people get easily offended watching them. It's a joke at the end of the day.
With show’s like Family Guy no one is safe from being roasted. I don’t remember if it was Mel Brooks or Don Rickles that said something like, if you don’t make fun of everyone then it’s racist.
It's true what you said about learning things you don't need to know. When I took algebra in high school, my teachers always told us that we needed to know algebra, because we would use it everyday in the real world. Not once since graduating high school have I had to use algebra. Thankfully. I'm horrible at math, despite being half-Japanese, lol.
2:24 This scene reminded me of samurai culture: As a samurai in practice, seppuku was used voluntarily by samurai to die with honor rather than fall into the hands of their enemies (and likely be tortured), as a form of capital punishment for samurai who had committed serious offences, or performed because they had brought shame to themselves. EDIT: I actually studied Asian culture because I'm a huge fan of Asia, as well as England. These two countries are what shaped my worldview.
5:48 I lived in Florida for a while and almost every day I saw these Korean guys outside Starbucks with their cars, that looked straight out of Fast and the Furious. I didn't understand the Korean but they were clearly talking about their cars the whole time, every time I saw them.
I remember a gag from the episode, “Lois kills Stewie”, where Stewie sings a song and one of the lines is “The Asian Guy who cuts in front of every single line”. After working in a theme park for the Summer, I never saw that happen on any of the rides. However, when I worked in the shops, I did see that happen a lot.
The phone tablet scooter joke gag maybe a reference to a RU-vid video on a iPad turning it also into a skateboard(2 in 1 usage) I saw several years ago.
Kelvin, I live in San Francisco. The Asians getting on the bus is so accurate (before Covid obviously). I showed this to to my asian friend and she laughed so hard at that joke.
Haha. I think you missed a couple jokes in translation. Loved the video. I'd actually like chat with you and laugh at both our "trying to understand each other" jokes. 😋
That giant Samsung phone is so true! I was in Korea in 2016 and this Taekwondo instructor guy had a huge samsung phone it was so big almost like a tablet. Haha! I don't know if that is still cool anymore in 2021.
Whenever I watch family guy reactions, I suspect most people younger than about 40 miss most of the cultural reference jokes. He didn't get the Trix cereal commercial, the Three's Company reference, the Kojak reference, and the Chinese food joke when they ate the reporter.
Kojak Bang Bang came from the film Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn(1970s)where they steal a cab unknowingly with an older Asian couple in it to prevent a crime from happening.
When I was young I played Drums, trumpet, violin, and piano. We didn't have much money so most of the stuff we got at thrift stores or were hand me down from my dad. Well, I really wanted to learn Bass Guitar. My mother refused to get me one. She thought I had enought instruments crowding up the house. Well fast foward about 20 years. I'm 27 and I see a beautiful Wood grain Ibanez 6 string bass for $300 brand new. I saved up for over a year to buy it, an amp, some effects petals, and a stand. I spent about 2 days painting a beautiful portrait of my mother on the back and named the guitar Theresa after my mom. Just to spite her. I ended up mastering it within 6 months. I can now play whatever I want.
When it comes to driving, you just get comfortable with what you're used to. I used to have a friend from LA who was absolutely terrified riding in my old beater farm truck as we went through narrow mountain passes in the snow. She kept saying we were going to get stuck, even though we never did. I know the mountains in my area and I know the limits of my vehicle. On the other hand, she was completely comfortable driving in the city, something that still makes me anxious to this day. As for the whole eating roadkill thing, I would never drive drunk and certainly never eat anybody's pet, but cooking food on your engine is actually pretty easy. You basically just wrap it in aluminium foil and find a spot where it'll fit relatively securely while you're driving. Of course, your options will vary depending upon the make and model of your vehicle.
The live action Ashton Kutcher commercial is because hes the real life husband of Meg's voice actress Mila Kunis. They were both actors in the TV comedy 'That 70s Show'
My sister-in-law and brother live in Diamond Bar in Cali, and they have said the same thing about Asian parents. They are both educators, and have seen high rates of depression, suicide, and very high expectations for Asian students, due to the parents. The crazy thing is, you can have a trade now, with much less schooling than college, NO student loans, and make even more money!
9:30 Im Swedish. My friend and I went to the Phillipines and everyone called us "Polar bear" and wanted to take selfies 🤣 cuz we were white and an easy foot taller than anyone else. It was crazy, in Manila things were pretty chill but when we got up in the mountains, there were literally entire cities where they had never seen a white person ever. They had some harvest festival with a parade which they insisted we joined. It was so much fun 😁
