''I take this TRIPLE vitamin c serum to lighten my skin'' and ''I love how she reaffirms her child on her Blackness...'' Which one is it? Beautiful, lovely mum wanting to gift her beloved girls the exciting experiences and milestones all little girls desire. Only this time it was straightening their hair (which she herself grew and cared for since their birth). Asians NEVER came to Black's videos to shame and ridicule your methods, and that respect should be reciprocated. There's no BLACK HAIR POLICE, so leave non-Black moms alone! It's THEIR children and they do a bloody good job at raising and caring for them!

I’ve been watching Lilly for years she’s literally the best mom ever. She always affirms her kids beauty and raise them to love their skin hair and culture. Their hair grew that long, healthy because she takes care of their hair well and DOESNT straighten it that’s why she doesn’t know how 😂. She also doesn’t want straightening their hair to become routine because she also worries about them liking it more than their curly hair. When they were younger and she was still learning she asked the black women in her life and area to help her style and take care of their hair. She’s always open to learning and suggestions she isn’t defensive and that’s why she’s a really good mom because she’s always growing

The question isn’t about her being a bad mother though, she is an awesome mother, but the father is not as present as he should be, and I don’t mean physically because I know there have been trials with his residency and work before. He doesn’t teach them about their African side. These girls go to all white school, living in an all white neighborhood, then they go home to an Asian mother who is teaching them her ideals of beauty and her culture and language, and a father that refuses to teach them his culture and language! Where is the father? The in-laws? Someone who shares their blackness to affirm that their black is valid and beautiful?

@@nycgirllauren you make it sound like she's forcing her ideals and language on them when she's not. As 90% of the comments have agreed upon, she tries. I've been watching them for the longest time and even I can't confidently make the statement you just did. We don't know what's going on offline, and it's none of our business. For us to assume the father isn't doing anything is out of line. And for us to claim that she is forcing her perceptions of beauty on her kids, is also out of line. We only know as much as they show us, and that's where it should end. Doesn't Mean everything we see on the internet is true.

I don’t necessarily think she’s FORCING her beauty standards on them but its happening because she’s seemingly all they have to gauge for beauty being that they are in all white areas. I’m not making this up, if you see their Instagram posts the older girl almost only wears her hair straight since that video, their perceptions of beauty are already warped it’s obvious what’s happening to them

She DIDN'T USE ANY HEAT PROTECTANT, NO HAIR LOTION, SILICONE SERUMS OR HAIR SPRAYS, I ain't see NOT ONE product was used in this video, that's why Dasomi was crying when she did her hair. I watched the girls' Tik-Tok, their hair is definitely DAMAGED AND IT'S A SHAME. Their hair is now heat damage, like why would she use the flat iron on the hottest level while doing multiple passes on each small section. I feel bad because the dad has been braiding their hair for years to grow it out and now their hair is completely damaged because their mother decided she was gonna flat iron their hair WITHOUT DOING ANY RESEARCH🙄🤦🏾‍♀️🙅🏾‍♀️

You seem kinda prejudice towards her for simply being asian / not being black. Calling an interaction between a loving mother and her kids triggering and that having those two kids was too much for her (even if you "took it back") just because she isn't black? I hope you learn some empathy, then you might find that some of your perceived micro aggressions are actually something completely different. She probably didn't start out straightening the hair at the root because she never used a straightener and didn't want to burn or scare the kid.
@Gomba13
@Gomba13 2 года назад
This wasn’t even about lack of empathy, it was lack of respect. Racially motivated lack of respect. She’s on about "affirming" the kid’s blackness, as though the kid weren’t also Asian. When is she supposed to "affirm" the kid’s asianness? The kid already looks essentially black, so if any "affirmation" were needed, it would be on the Asian side. More importantly, why would a kid, who is oblivious to race, need her race "affirmed?" A healthy identity is not based on genetics, it’s based on culture and values. The best way to raise racists is to raise a kid’s awareness to their own and other people’s race.

As Yuri said, she was asking to get her hair straightened for 2 weeks, she could have done research in those 2 weeks and it could have told her that she shouldn't drag that straightener through their hair so much times! I've watched them both and Lily really could have done better here. First video of Lily Petals that I’ve watched is that video, and I’ve been binge watching her videos since then. I really admire her for insisting her husband (now ex?) to teach their daughters Swahili, which is one of the languages spoken in Kenya. She also lets her daughters learn other languages like Spanish and she tries hard to support their hobbies like gymnastics and dancing. She believes that her daughters will have an edge when they grow older if they try to learn a lot of stuff. But she doesn’t force her kids. She also listens to their opinions and let them decide what they want. I really think she’s doing a great job at raising her kids. So kudos to her!

I’m not mixed, but my mom only knew perm, hot comb, and grease. None of those worked for me, so my hair was in terrible condition until the natural hair movement happened and I learned more about my hair as an adult. Also growing up, my mom didn’t affirm my natural hair, and made us feel like black hair was bad. most black women weren’t raised knowing how to properly take care of their hair. A lot of black women have these trial and error experiences too. So we can’t take offense to someone who’s learning the same way we did, just because they’re not black. Yes so, she's Korean. And there are no micro aggressions with her. She constantly tell her daughters they are beautiful and to love their skin and hair. ESPECIALLY in Korea where white skin and straight hair is the beauty standard (stems from Chinese culture I think with the porcelain doll thing). How she does in this video makes sense since she has never straightened afro curly hair. And her attempt to use a comb in order to make her curls straight (to me) says she did research how to do it. I did the same thing when I was learning to do my own hair. As someone living in Asia, I can tell you it is extremely hard to get hair care appliances (hot comb) and products for my hair and I have 4B mostly. Been here going on 5 years and have yet to get a hot comb or a hot enough hair dryer to do a blow out 🤷🏾. And the dad doesn't know (actually typed this before I got to the part where she said he doesn't know anything about straightening hair 😂). Dads never know unless they are forced to! She's doing amazing raising her biracial kids and she does well trying to educate herself on the culture from what I've seen. She is also not a native English speaker so certain AAVE or slang words may be difficult for her to understand so tutorials may also be difficult depending on the circumstances. Just fyi for anyone who watches this. Not everyone is out to get us or be rude / a sucker to ignorance. I can say that she is for the culture. That mom knows damn well what her child needs, leave it.

@@Lykaah1 yes, I'm not black and have no clue how your culture does their hair, I know the time and the effort that gets put into it and it is phenomenal, but I am appalled at how this woman acted as if the asian woman was committing some outrageous crime. Very disappointed.

I like how she’s teaching her kids both languages. I have a Chinese sis n law and my 2 nephews were never taught how to speak,write,and read Chinese. They now live in China Town NY and finally picking up on some Chinese. There first day of school in NY they felt so awkward because all the children in school are 100% Chinese and I guess never seen a mixed white/Chinese kid. So all the kids were staring at my nephews. To me if you put a 100% Chinese kid next to my nephews I wouldn’t be able to tell any differences because my nephews took more after their Chinese mom. Skin tone/color,eye shape,hair color,etc. They do however have my brothers curly hair though.

I can't even lie I straighten my hair from the front of my head to the back too. If my arms get too tired I can pull the back into a bun or throw a hat/turban on that part, rock out the front and keep it pushing.

*Quick note, that mother is Korean. Here are examples of three very common written Asian languages, since a lot of people confuse them: 한국어, Korean 日本語, Japanese 中国人, Chinese (SIMPLIFIED) 中國人, Chinese (TRADITIONAL)

Honestly, this just shows how little she exposes herself to other cultures (yet judges others for not doing so either). Anyone who's ever looked at Korean for 5 seconds will be able to distinguish it for the rest of their life. The plethora of circles is a DEAD giveaway...

She’s busy being so preoccupied by the girls being half black that she doesn’t even try to find out which Asian country their mother is from.

I feel like the term microaggression is either used too much or is too harsh a term with "aggression" being in it, because that mother obviously had no aggression and was doing her best. Say she's ignorant of black hair, but saying microaggression in this honestly sounds more like a term that promotes division, which in turn promotes racism.

I think there is also that aspect of little girls wanting to look like their mom. My mother has short hair & when I was 5 I asked her if I could have the same haircut that she has. So she took me to the hair dresser & I came out looking like my brother. I loved it for a couple of days & then I couldn't wait for it to grow back. It's also just fun to play around with your looks :)

As a mom of a biracial child... I did not care for your input on this video. It's one thing to give helpful insight and another to make sparky remarks to try to be funny. Many things are learn as you go, advice, tutorials, trial and error... but as long as she tries and learns. Shes a good mom in my book.

Hmmm...this comment really made me think. My family members and I do this accent switch thing at home all the time. We switch to our Naija accent and, yes, it does get a laugh. But, I don't think we're doing it because we're saying a Naija accent is funny/worthy of ridicule. I think we switch when the joke is something from our cultural heritage or something our 'aunties/uncles' would say. So, I don't think it's really shucking and jiving. But, it is something to think about when we're creating content that will be consumed by non-Naija/African audiences.

Please don't take everything offensive. I hear the word "micro-aggression" a lot in this video and i just wanna say that she is her mum, and all mum's know how to take care of their kids. Yes the child's hair isn't like her mum's hair (texture-wise) and so the ways her mum straightens her own hair might not necessarily work on her daughters hair but a least she is giving it a go. I have never been in a situation where I need to look after curly hair but honestly, if I were in that situation, I wouldn't have been able to work with it and possibly couldn't have, in case I damage it as I have no experience with curly hair and my hair is the complete opposite of it. My hair is naturally straight and fluffy when combed out. The mum is trying her best and every small action she does can definitely be unintentional and not be with a ill or racial motive. Props to the mum for trying her best and not giving up even when its her first time!
