Today a new type of comparison, one running shoe in an out and out battle against many others! I have received loads of requests for comparisons of the NOVABLAST 2 vs lots of other models. I shall work my way through all the recent shoes to give a real feel for how it shapes up.

Still not bought version 2 of the Novablast, but love the V1. Great all rounder.

For me the Novablast 2 is way more stable than the Rebel V2. The Rebel as a fantastic upper imo, a fun shoe, but I can feel my muscles in the hip and groin area working on a microlevel to stabilize the leg. Afraid to get injured so I'm selling my pair of Rebels. The Novablast is the solid, heavy, but very trustworthy daily trainer. It also has a fair bit of propulsion which makes it so great.

My local parkrun is around a rough grassy field, plenty of little undulations, many molehills, small boggy bit, and a little climb at the end of each lap. It was also wet last weekend and my friend decided the Tempo Next% was the best shoe for it! ... and he came 2nd with a sub-19!! Ambitious choice, but he seems to have been right!!

Well, I have no actual experience with any of these shoes but I did see a shoe battle done by Seth DeMoor between the Hoka Mach 4 with the Mach 4 winning by a nose. Both shoes are noted to be very versatile daily trainers. You are waxing poetic on these shoe descriptions Ed! Keep those reviews coming! Meanwhile, I just got back from my 1st run with the Saucony Endorphin Shift ver 1. Hey, I'm a shoe geek. I have the Pro and Speed and wanted a box set. Despite the lukewarm reviews of the Shift line, I like the firm ride and stability of this shoe as compared to my Mach 4 and Clifton 7 which I love also for a softer day. If you put me on a polygraph and I tell you I'm not buying anymore shoes, it will go bonkers! Ha!

I was really particular about my shoes when I was a kid as an adult I didn't really bother to try and have the better shoes available. Now that I have crossed over 40 I have to have a descent shoe.

I've run a bit in the Noveblast 2 and I'm loving it. I can see why people might not like the instability, but it's a non-issue for me. Living in the heart of Toronto, Canada, it's very flat and straight.

I love the Novablast 2, but I realize that it looses it's "excitement" pretty fast. Most of the springing sensation comes from that strange trampoline pod in the middle of the forefoot at it's outsole, the thing is it flattens out pretty fast. Mine's only at 200km and I'm no longer getting quite as much 'pop' off my step and that center pod seems almost completely flattened out. Hope they fix it in the next version, maybe make the pod with a little steeper drops.

Tempo next % is my go to now....I took it out on trails last week and was a blast. When I first picked it up I didn't think we'd get along , but I was wrong. It's that good I can get over the massive slapping noise it makes , scaring the shite out of people half a mile away .

For tempo runs I rotate the Asics Novablast 2, Asics Metaracer and Nike Zoom Vomero 14. Vastly different shoes, but my feet love the variety. Today was a Novablast day, and going 15 min at 4'15" down (up?) to 4'00" was a breeze. They're very responsive when you want to change gears. But one more weakness of the Novablast revealed itself today (in addition to their sluggishness on long runs), and that is the grip, or lack of it, in wet conditions. With a light sprinkling of rain on city pavement tiles, you get noticeable slippage on gentle turns. Even more noticeable if you hit some of that oily municipal road sludge.

Love the comparos Ed! Thoughts on the Novablast 2 versus the Velocity Nitro? I have both and am finding similar use cases for them. Finding Velocity to be much better for me on longer runs, it just feels much more stable and controlled.

The Nike tempo next% are my daily trainer, use them for nearly everything. Have 720km in my first pair and they still feel great. Just picked up a new pair for $143 Australian ~ £76. Should have bought a couple of pairs.

The outsole on the puma is one of the best in the industry..I use both the deviate nitro as a long run shoe and the velocity is my speed shoe for 200m to 400m on dirt tracks..I can't use the illuminate cos it has not structure and no forefoot cushioning but it has maybe the best traction of the 3 pumas..I concur on the tempo next%.. it is a great 5k racer,especially on a hilly course..

Next% for £115. Where - I must know?! As a normal size person 6’ and Uk11 I can’t find them anywhere. Only hobbit sizes 😊. Novablast is the Emperor’s New Clothes if running shoes. After 450 miles I realised they were really not for me but as everyone told me they were great I kept on with them. Retiring them was a relief. Rip Lemmy - acoustic Ace of Spades - genius.

Haha I agree totally. I have version 1 and I kept on kidding myself they was great but just kept on getting aching limbs on every run. Same as the endorphin speed everybody said it was fantastic so I bought it and it was ok at best. Quite a firm hard ride I don't t really enjoy.

I like the rebel v2 and liberate nitro more than the novablast 2. In fact I think the novablast 2 is the cause of my recent foot pain. Only on the left foot. Going to cut down the novablast 2 to just one run per week from 3. This is a shame as I’ve gotten some good runs in the Novablast 2. It just hurts after a run. Hopefully the velocity nitro works and becomes part of the weekly rotation.

The Tempo Next% is my go to shoe for easy, long and recovery runs 😲 I use it on trails that aren't too technical or muddy I find it too heavy and clunky for speed work 🤔 How do feel about Mighty Joe Willock gannin t'the Toon like?

Motörhead re-recorded Overkill for the Guitar Hero games series around 2007 I believe. This version is an absolute stonker, my gym used to let me use the cycling studio near the end of the day when all the classes were finished and I played it on the sound system. I disagree on you with rebel v2. I find it more unstable and don’t find it good for long runs. I also find the fuelcell squishes down too much.

I ran 14.5 miles in the Rebel v2 last week and was surprised at how well they performed for me on a longer run. For me the Novablast 2 feels a little heavy and clunky to take past 10 miles. Think that the Novablast is likely to remain an easy day and recovery shoe in my rotation. Rebel 2 appears to be good across all distances as long as the legs aren't too beaten up and my form starts to suffer. Love Fuelcell.

@@MarkSmith_Best-Athletics so this is comparing apples and oranges , on is used for 1 purpose the other used for another. I’m not saying I don’t like the rebel but i use the Novablast as an easy day recovery shoe. I find it’s more stable at those slower paces and this is what I think it’s good for. I don’t think the rebel is good for them because it puts me back on my heel a bit at slower paces and the midsole is too soft which makes it unstable then. But when i go at faster paces in the Rebel I’m more midfoot and it’s fairly stable because of the outsole that Edd mentioned. To sum up I think they’re both great shoes but have different purposes. I just find my legs feel better after running in the Novablast.

Hi Edd, How do the Adidas Adizero Pro compare to the Puma Liberate Nitro’s. Love my Liberates, just after a very similar shoe maybe with a bit more mid foot cushioning…. Any ideas 💡

It’s a good shoe, super upper but a very different underfoot feel. Nitro foam is quite unique and as such hard to pin point another shoe. The peg turbo 2 isn’t far off.

@@EDDBUD Thanks, had the Turbo 2’s and sold them. Great shoe but just felt like they would bottom out at times. I do kind of regret selling them but for me the Liberate Nitro is the better of the two.
