This is brilliant. I’ve never broken down this chord like this. I’ve also never taught a beginner the barre chord. But I rarely play the easy one on stage. I have a new private student who understands music theory. I will teach her the barre chord a little later on.

Andy, how do you retain all of that knowledge of chords !!! I wish I could do that. I still play ' by ear ' & wish I could read & understand music in the way that you do !

Thanks Clive… so many people say they regret not keeping up with the theory as they learned to play. That’s why I try keep a little helping of it in every tuition video I do for Octopus… to try to help people get an awareness of what notes they’re playing! 😄👍

I consider the reason some find difficultity with barre chords is the positioning of thumb on neck of instrument. Unless some part of the thumb tip is behind neck it makes it difficult with a uke and nigh on impossible with a guitar. Most experienced players change the positioning of the thumb instinctively. The less experienced don't do so until I tell them😀😀

I think I’ll have to do a video on barre chords, it would be useful!

I remember when I took up the guitar as a teenager barre chords and the standard F chord being particularly difficult to play especially on a cheap acoustic with a high action but then it suddenly "clicked". Then of course with being able to buy better quality and better set up instruments it got even easier. Now of course on the uke barres are a doddle. What is a pain is buying something like an old time uke song book with the original tablature and many of the chords are an absolute nightmare! You need to be a digitally enhanced contortionist!!!!😅

how do you play a d7 when you need a C and an A in the melody? That's one moment where I use the "guitar d7" and then when the d7 is the final chord after the Daug
