Beautiful Andy I went to Ray house many time lovely man he let me play all of his ukes Which was a honour . Onley wish I had the money I buy it tc great playing andy
Superb arrangement and performance, Andy! Can you answer one question for me, though? Why does your uke have odd strings like that? Was it deliberate, or just random at the time? It obviously does not detract in any way from the sound - but does it ENHANCE it in any way? It just strikes me as odd - so I wondered if there was any particular reason for it?
Hi Steve… Yes they were carefully chosen! Most sets of strings are designed with C tuning in mind, and are aimed at mass-produced, thick-bodied instruments. I tune my soprano in traditional D tuning, and being a top-end vintage Martin, it’s wafer-thin wood! So I selected the lighter strings from a set of Aquila and a set of Galli.
I can’t remember the details, but a magician called Fred Kaps once had to follow the Beatles on a tv show, I think it was another of their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. Fred Kaps was mainly a silent act and was really great. Worth looking up.
