In a new format of conversation RU-vid viewer Gregory Ory asks John Butler the questions: "Why Jesus? Why the Bible?" How does cultural conditioning or religious upbringing facilitate or impede our spiritual awakening? Do labels like 'Christian', 'Buddhist' or 'Zoroastrian' help or hinder on the path? Is our very idea of 'God' a stumbling block? You may be surprised by John's answer.
You can now listen to John on Spotify and other audio platforms. Here is his most popular recording 'Common sense guide to meditation' (1m views) - ffm.to/commonsenseguidetomedi....

I am a muslim born atheist and nearly watched every video of John. Him saying Jesus or the Lord or anything about Christianity doesnt bother me none. I watch and listen to him before sleep, I even open his videos in my car while driving to work and listen on the background. He's really comforting. I think the thing mostly attract me is the effortlessness... Thank you John.

"Why Jesus, why the Bible..." Why not, that's all I have to say. Now about that duality thing and looking for the third point: I wonder if you know about the remarkable book of Iain McGilchrist, "The Master and His Emissary" -you two brilliant men would complete each other. Oh, a dialogue between the two of you...!! He explains the neurology of why we keep having this dual, limited perspective upon things. Ever so grateful. Thank you.

“Come away to a quiet place.” Jesus would find quiet places, away from others to “Be still and know”. “Go into your private closet, or place, to pray”.

Yes, Jesus said the way to know and love our maker is to follow his instructions: "When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your heavenly Father, and your Father, who sees what's done in secret will reward you" and "your Father knows what you need before you ask". This then is how you should pray.... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins debts and trespasses, as we forgive our debtor, who sin and trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil "Please fill us with your Holy spirit" Amen

This video made me realize how infinite, versatile, and adaptable this "stillness" that it can be discovered in any religion, regardless of the degree it gets things "right" or "wrong". And now that we can look into each other's faith traditions, we have even more tools at our disposal to meet the stillness/unity until eventually we won't need any tools or religion at all, we'll all just be. Thanks for all you share, John!

Please lay religion, Christian culture, and even politics aside. Someone who truly loves you is reaching out to you not willing that you should perish (2 Peter3), but that you be saved from price of your sins. With that said, how do you deal with your sin? Yes you. How many times have you lied, lusted, or stolen? I'm guilty, what about you? I hope you feel convicted. But if you're going to reject the free gift of salvation, you ought to think about where you are going after death. Is this your mindset? Luke 12:19 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” But what can you do? This what you must first realize: Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; That's you. You must realize that you have personally sinned against God. John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Romans 6 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Acts 3:19 - Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; You have to believe it from the heart. Romans 10 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved Here is the gospel straight and simple: 1. Truly acknowledge that you have sinned against a perfect God and you are worthy of hell that can only be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ 2. Believe that Jesus died for and covered all of your sins and rose again. 3. Say to God that Jesus Christ he is your saviour. Please let me know. I am praying for you, today is the day of salvation.

Thank you for this message! I couldn't describe in words the feelings of annoyance that have arisen in me lately in regards to my attendance at the church I frequent. I have come to realize it is because of this church's emphasis on labeling myself a Christian and thus excluding others and their faiths. I am not fond of adopting labels, and find it to be more of an ego boost and even a form of tribalism. I still have a love and acceptance for the words of Christ and the teachings of the bible, and have begun meditating as well. John nailed it when he said that we are all seeking the same things, which include freedom, to love, and to be loved. He also helped me a great deal by stating that we do not need to reject anything. Whether I agree or disagree with certain church practices, I can still be humble and loving. Thank you again 🙏

As a side note, I have begun attending morning meditations at a local Zen Buddhist temple. I'm unsure as to how members of the church would react to this but it's something I keep to myself. I enjoy it very much in its simplicity, and I also enjoy chanting about loving every living creature on our earth. The world has so much to offer, there isn't only one avenue!

Brilliant, as always, John. Thank you. BTW, I'm Jewish, raised Jewish, never grew up believing in Jesus's divinity, but I've never felt as though you're preaching Christianity. Using your background in the Bible as a starting place for a way to discuss stillness and meditation just makes sense. I believe what you're expounding, at its core, goes beyond any single religion. Not sure why Gregory felt the need to focus his obvious anti-Christian feelings on you.
@yepsirree
@yepsirree 5 лет назад
Well put! Although, I suppose if you were to choose anyone to focus those feelings onto, someone like John wouldn't be a bad choice, since his thought is so elevated, and his heart so big. The way he responded to Mr. Ory's questions was brilliant, as you say, and hopefully served to enlighten the fella, as it did for me. So in a way its good that Mr. Ory asked what he asked, because now it need not be a point of such contention among those with similar questions. :)

This one wasn't said by Mr. Butler. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the WAY and the TRUTH and the LIFE. No one comes to the Father EXCEPT through me. Romans 1:16 - For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 1 Corinthians 6:11 - And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Since when has the Christian story been an amalgamation of pagan myths? No historian thinks that. And unlike many religious figures, most historians, whether they be religious or not, agree that Jesus did in fact exist on earth--not as a metaphor but as a real person.

Really, well read this and think if it might apply to you. I know you are no longer "religious." I'm not being a jerk, I want you come to truth. 1 Timothy 4:1 “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall DEPART from the faith, giving heed to seducing SPIRITS, and doctrines of devils" 2 Timothy Chapter 3 1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all [men], as theirs also was. 2 Peter Chapter 2 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. Jeremiah 17:9 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 1 Cor 2:14 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Think about these things for your own sake.

Why Jesus? Why the bible?.. I actually have thought about this question myself, as i have been (binge)watching John's videos.. It just seems to me that his conclusions regarding stillness, presence, meditation, the nothingness or formlessness of God, are much easier conclusions to arrive at through Buddhism and Hinduism, even Daoism.. I have personally never been able to see the bible pointing at that same conclusion.. It seems more difficult to derive that wisdom from the bible.. The fact, however, that someone like John, who has only really known Christianity, can get to the same place as traditions like Buddhism and Hinduism and Daoism, is very beautiful, and reassuring about where the truth lies.. You are one of the wisest men i have ever heard speak, John.. Thank you..

It’s shortsighted on your part to believe that John-or any Christian, for that matter-has only experienced or explored his/her own religion, and none of the others. Is it not possible that they could have, and still find the faith of Jesus to be the sufficient answer to life’s questions in ways the others aren’t?

I find it fascinating that so many people out there in the world have had some sort of spiritual awakening of some form or another - and are now trying to make sense of it by seeking out people like John Butler who can give some sort of guidance or reassurance on the matter. I sometimes wonder if it's an evolutionary trait, maybe eventually more and more of us will seek and attain these experiences as the human brain develops. It could well be the result of some sort of evolutionary survival mechanism. Has there been any long term studies into the number of people who've had these experiences, to see if it's on the increase?

gregory... why jesus? why the bible? those are questions i asked myself for many years. why jesus... because, as john has oft quoted, "the wages of sin are death and the gift of god is eternal life through jesus christ our lord." as the last adam, jesus (son of god/son of man) took the separation (sin) of all humankind upon himself on that instrument of death, the cross... our sense of alienation from god and aloneness. and there was put to death. hence, all humanity is co-crucified in christ. and co-raised unto eternal life... union / communion / oneness in and with god. if folks can find a better story than that, go for it! personally, my faith and participation in this wondrous story has served me very well for almost 40 years. i never never walk alone.

If you believe in higher authority, then it’s possible that John was born where and when he was in order for him to be raised in the Christian faith, so that he could reach and help many of the people that were raised the same. So it maybe it comes back to purpose.

I've felt this for a long while - but - in these times, I've found comfort in saying I'm a Christian - the reason? Because I use Jesus as my reference beacon for 'good'. I feel there is a huge spiritual 'battle' going on - powers that control the world (you enn for example) are attempting a spiritual 'synthesis' - to amalgamate all religions - to 'appropriate' Christianity into their theosophical soup (I have uploaded content on this). Interestingly, it's Jesus in particular who seems to be their target - their nemesis. This is why I feel more and more drawn to Jesus (the beacon:). I do wonder if in fact there is no 'oneness', but a 'twoness'. Everything in life has an opposite - everything. Why not reality also? Like the nodes of a magnet - positive and negative...you get where I'm going with this I'm sure.

The language of Faith! It is intoned without fear and through Love, the same Love by which Grace alone is given. To stand fearless in the face of your greatest fear and every imaginable adversity - they are all imagined! - knowing that through the comfort of Divine Love all will be well if you believe it. And yet, there is a paradox to be found within it, that if everything comes from God so too does fear, but then to realise even more that if Love is everything it has no opposites and fear remains ever the illusion. I think this must be so, that we should come to know of God's love - of Divine Love! - through our fears as well our joys and sorrows, if only we vest ourselves in Faith, you see? How else can we know of the Light of Love that guides us over the darkness that keeps us hidden. I also like to think that Christ's love - Divine Love, in all its innocence and unconditionality - transcends Christianity itself. It must surely do, because otherwise it would not be true!

When I was 13 years old, we used to laugh and ridicule a man like John. Called him a crazy fool. Now I am 56 years old, and I listen contently to what he has to say. This is a perfect example of Jesus's parable about Sowing the seeds. At a young age your is mind full of rocks and nothing grows, then you age and your mind becomes fertile ground for the teachings. Like John, I went to the Eastern religions, to learn meditation, and to learn what Jesus was talking about. When I leave church on Sunday, I find myself still hungry. They spend all there time trying to prove who Jesus was and ignore his teachings.

People get too caught up in their own stories in order to redeem their own suffering and through that miss Heaven altogether. People make it so complicated for themselves and teach their bull to others to verify their own beliefs. Stillness is common sense. It's hidden in the complacency of the consciousness of sin.

1 Corinthians Chapter 15 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Romans 10:9-13 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Titus 3:7 - That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. That is how we are saved, the only way.

In my opinion and what I keep coming back to is this, words, language are the means by which our conscious and unconscious, filters experience, images etc, from this both our hearts and minds make sense of everything. In the beginning was the word, God spoke and there was light etc. What that word sounded like I don't know, but it's interesting that it brought about order and meaning. The other route for discovering God which I have tried but feel is not for me really is meditation. I find it a cold and impersonal approach personally, though has its value in improving our wellbeing , to a degree. But the word, for me which is the Bible works. It is spoken of as the Word, and as bread. Jesus himself is spoken of as the Word made flesh. Yes , in the wider sense words are vital, and the idea of God as the word is enormously helpful and also emotionally and intellectual satisfying. It's a start that may lead to more words or go beyond to a state wordless wonder as we encounter the very presence of God. Praise Him.

I'd like to toss in something here. First, hi. Second, that's where the part of we are fundamentally dark creatures since the fall. We were created by God, we sin, and then we fall deeper. We run away. And with giving into the curse, we as a human race fall deeper with each step we take away from God.
@Techadopter

CMJ99productions What purpose did the tree of knowledge (the apple tree) serve other than to NOT be eaten from, and a fruit tree that serves as it’s only purpose to not be eaten from surely constitutes as a ‘trap’ As with all traps all they need is to be triggered and applied time and they fire. The missing part of the equation was man to be fallible enough to fail, so to say ‘we’ sinned and all guilty individually for collective contrived sin seems to me to be a flawed theory made by man and not the desire of an omnipotent being.
@CMJ99productions
@CMJ99productions 4 года назад
@@Techadopter I'm so sorry for not replying to you sooner! Here is what I think. In my opinion, I think we were made in God's image inside and out. At first before the fall. From time in prayer and things I've come to find something. God has a personality, shocker I know, but he does! With that He wants to be chose, not forced to be loved by his creations. Because forced love can never really be love. So I believe that the apple was God's way of saying, "If you love me dont eat this. Choose me, not the fruit. Love me no matter how great the other option is, because that's what I would( and did) for you( You and me)" That is what I feel is most likely the truth.
@Techadopter
@Techadopter 4 года назад
CMJ99productions I would never brow beat anybody for believing what they believe so please take this only as my interpretation. You speak of ‘love’, to me love can not be forced nor faked, and is totally uncontrollable. It is also, in my view a result of the actions of others. You don’t choose to love you love something about somebody or thing that is out of your control. To say you ‘love’ God to me seems fanciful in the literal sense because you can’t know for certain if ‘he’ exists nor do you know his true nature. You may ‘think’ you do, but all you love is the idea of God imo. This is where my problem originates. Religion doesn’t ask us to believe in God, it asks us the believe the word of man. How many people have expressed being directly and irrefutably contacted by God? Very few. How many witnessed miracles either now or thousands of years ago? Again very few. We by nature are inquisitive animals, if we weren’t to question the word of those who say they have witnessed then we would be rather gullible. Apparently, so the story goes these few individuals carry the message on our behalf. Well doesn’t that strike you as rather odd if it’s true that God already entrusted ‘man’ and was betrayed by ‘original sin’? What supposedly constitutes the most important message to living beings is given fallible man to pass on, be misinterpreted, altered or manipulated? We have regulators, ombudsmen, police forces even spam filters to protect us from the desires of other humans, yet we are supposed to take the word without question of a select few for some reason. So the choice was apparently given; to take or leave the apple. Are we individuals judged by our decisions (and damned) or are we one person guilty by association? Because I don’t see where God addressed me personally and asked me not to take the apple, yet man apparently carries the message telling me I need to gain redemption for somebody else’s betrayal. What is that exactly, guilt by genome? If we are all guilty by this act then we’re are all redeemed by the pious. Of course I am being slightly trite there, but the point is clear. The story in it’s absurdity doesn’t work logically because it’s reverse engineered by apologists who want to control others. I have no bent with the idea of God. Perhaps as Calvin implied, we are chosen at birth and nothing we do will change that....my inability to understand might be my non selection, but equally it might be because I asked the questions that broke the shackles of human malevolent intent. If we followed the bible we all would be falling to our knees each time it thundered, we would walk around without investigating our surround nor advancing on knowledge because we were told to just accept. How many people have been burnt at the stake for being correct and the church apologies centuries later? We all want to believe something, but as the ‘leap of faith’ will always provide you with a sign if you want it enough, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Good luck.
