Wow. It blows my mind that you learned multiple instruments. Your drum and piano playing is remarkable. When it comes to music, there are people who have to work super hard and can only get so far. Then there are others, which it seems like you, that are able to work hard and are rocketed into the sky!

I'm very impressed by Simulated Sun. Most of the science stuff is over my head, but I'm all about the art, and you, sir, are an artist. Have you considered composing instrumental albums? Synthwave is a particular love of mine, and I'd love to hear some great ambient tracks.

Interesting background. I was also in a rock band years ago. I usually played rhythm guitar. I also went to college and graduate school, majoring in chemistry, and then law school (a big mistake). My current music interests are also in synthesizer generated music or synthesizer effects with world music. I taught college chemistry while building up a patent law practice. Eventually, I got fed up with the legal field and the dishonest and stupid people polluting the field, and went back into the sciences, where there is a better class of people compared with the legal field. Good luck, and follow you heart. Your videos are great.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains - BTW, it took me 15 years to get my BS in computer engineering - I kept changing majors and ended up with minors in math, physics, and astrophysics. Another amusing story from my past: in about 1978 when I was working at a computer company in Minnesota, our group of software and hardware engineers would frequent a tiny bar across the street from our office. The bar hired the usual musicians for live entertainment. One time they hired a guy who played synthesizers whom I got to know because of my interest in that music genre. His name was Yanni. Interesting guy. Got to know him quite well personally. One thing I have always been curious about is *why* people like electronic music. For me it has to do with my type of synesthesia - I "see" sound - in my mind's eye - electronic music, for me, is a tremendous visual experience as well as audio. Do you have some similar sort of synesthesia that drives your attraction to synth? Or to music in general? One last note, I listen to a lot of trip hop of late and discovered a guy in LA who produces a 1-hour trip hop mix every week that I think your music would fit into nicely - check out his RU-vid channel LoQDubious aka Lance's Dark Mood Party Mix if you're interested. Trip hop seems to place a lot of emphasis on percussion which is always fun. Cheers!
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 4 года назад
I do like trip hop! I'll have to check out. No synesthesia for me, at least not unless on hallucinogens or something. Then sound becomes a bit tactile. But I just love synths!

Graduates from college, several bands, nationwide tour: "I had nothing to show for myself by my early 30's" Me: 36, never went to college, fizzled acting career eaten by covid, literally fired from a band for my clothing choice: -_- Some people work very hard for much less success than you experienced by the time you had your 2016 moment. Just for some perspective. You're doing just fine in my eyes.

Really insightful, like really! I have been in various bands (was mainly the drummer), but after various projects didn't pan out I started simply using tech. Had a track (yeah... not 3 albums) released back in the late 90's early 00's, but the label folded shortly after so nothing really came of it. I still plug away every now and then, but I'm also very, very aware that what I write is so horrifically niche it's probably unmarketable and I'm okay with that.

That is awesome Dave! That is very similar to my story in many ways, only in reverse, as I started as a drummer/percussionist, then in my teenage/early 20's started to play keyboard/piano (by the way, a piano is actually a percussion instrument :) ) But I would rather draw attention to the correlation between music, and science/math (or "maths" if you are in the UK)! So I really want to stress the importance of music in the sense of how it relates to "thinking outside of the box" , and how math and science have a symbiotic relationship with music. I already knew you had to be a musician, as people don't just decide to buy the type of equipment in your background as "furniture" lol :)

I worked as a musician for 30+ years and I'm still not exactly sure why. I think I was too busy the whole time to reflect on my priorities or something like that. I remember everything being very difficult and demanding without much in return financially and even personally. Just thought I'd share my weird story. To be perfectly honest, I just thought I was supposed to be a musician, so I kept trying to be that. It never really occurred to me that I should look into other things even though I worked in the trades occasionally and did pretty well at them. It's strange how life really can "pass you by". Now what? I have no idea. Absolutely no idea whatsoever. Thanks for all your hard work man. I appreciate all of the knowledge that you offer. Seriously.

I always considered myself a musician by heart and soul. But my intellect drew me into math and science. In my opinion, mathematics is intimately connected to music. This is beyond the technical aspect of sine waves and pitch and tamber. But, just the beauty, symmetry and the intellectual aspects. Well done, Dave. This rounds out your personality. I am off to subscribe and check out your other channel. We had a Mathematics professor here do an entire PBS series on the mathematics of music.
