Us ER veterinarians are good at what we are good at, and not good at the things we aren't good at! Take us or leave us! We have to stay in our lane otherwise we are definitely going to say the wrong thing!

Going from ER to a day practice my head was swimming from all the parasite treatment and vaccine stuff. The worst visits were always people who thought they could come get vaccines or a health certificate on the weekend because it was “an emergency”. ‼️

OMG I haaaaate health certificates! The absolute worst is when clients need to go someplace certified rabies free and they start asking about a health certificate like a week before leaving 😩

Why wouldnt you already have the certificates? Like as the owner. When i moved my cat into my aprtment i had to show her vaccines where up-to-date and i send them the chart thingy i had gotten from my vet where it Said what vaccines she was supposed to have and also wich ones she had (wich ofc is all the same ones and also all being still with in the date of when i sendt the documents over)

@Emjay-ed2se 4 месяца назад
@@Moon_x_sun in order to travel, especially out of the country, pets must have a health certificate within the last 7 days. We have to get them when we transport our adopted animals to other states(I volunteer at the humane society). It’s a pain but a necessity because you want to make sure the animal isn’t infectious and is UTD on vaccines

Oh that name sounds like what we've been using. I'm always worried these things will have a negative effect on our dogs, it is a form of poison (for the parasites) after all. So I went with what was recommended, even though it's expensive. Less snacks for me, but more peace of mind.. somehwat.

Simpariac Trio is my go to for my dog, it's a chew so it's easy to give to her and it will prevent mites in the event that any come in on the guinea pigs' hay. It's interesting that the "year round" is a debate in the US because I'm Australian I can't imagine not having tick protection and prevention for my dog even in the colder months when ticks are less common the risk with the paralysis tick here is just too high for me.

I think it's because an ER vet needs to get to the next emergency patient ASAP, and doesn't have much time to answer questions people should be asking their regular vet. Besides, they probably wouldn't be prescribing year-round preventatives anyway since the regular vet needs to do yearly checkups, making sure it's the right dose for the animal's current weight, etc. It looks like a simple question on the surface, but there are lots of options and every animal is different so it's a more appropriate conversation to have with a standard vet.

Depends on where you live because fleas and ticks can become resistant in certain areas. If it requires a veterinary prescription then you know it works and the drug company will most likely reimburse or pay for treatment if needed. For example, where I live all the cheap preventatives at Walmart or petco literally do not work. So I have my dog on proheart 12 injection and bravecto. If my dog were to get heartworms, proheart would cover the cost of testing and treatment. But if you can’t afford a years supply of preventatives at one time, I would recommend simperica trio since it’s still Moxidectin but in a chewable once a month form. I hope that was helpful ❤
@cassthompson3386

Bravecto 💯💯 It is the best ive ever used for both my cats and dogs! (Specific type for each of course). It works on fleas, ticks, larvae, several types of worms, including heartworm prevention, and maybe mosquitoes too (i cant remember).... *and* it lasts for 3 months! Definitely the best, in my opinion.
@Sigart
@Sigart 5 месяцев назад
Nexgard uses the same active ingredient (unless you use Spectra, which is kinda does sound like you do) and lasts for just 1 month. The advantage to that is that Bravecto has to put 10 times as much of the active ingredient in to last that long.

Still not sure about bravecto or many other pills out there. Not because are bad, but because for.them.to work they actually have to buy the dog and the risks or erchlechia is high still. We use them but still we also use many natural things

My vet recommended Bravecto. I’m lazy and don’t do it for my indoor only cats, but I trust her and everyone in the practice. Advantage is ok, too. But most regular practices have a web page for flea and tick and often an online pharmacy, so that’s a place to start. Or you could call and leave a message and be sure to tell them it’s not an emergency, and the receptionist can call back with “with his health, Bravecto would be best.”

My answer is the chewables. I grew up with a lot of dogs and we tried giving them flea baths, using the flea drops, and flea collars, and they just don’t work. We gave the dogs chewable flea and tick treatments and it’s like the invincible little S.O.B.s finally died off.

Both. So many options, so many possible side effects, and each dog is an individual so it's not possible to predict what will go well with yours. Some dogs get sick of one brand, while many others do great on it. Always difficult. We've tried some supposed natural remedies or nature based brands, but you can take a guess; that year we found more ticks than ever :/

@PixieoftheWood

The best option also might depend on your dog's medical history, which an ER vet may or may not have. For example, nexguard plus is the one my regular vet typically recommends, as long as the dog doesn't have a history of seizures.

@undefinederror40404
@undefinederror40404 6 месяцев назад
It's always a balancing act between price and usefullness. Cheaper tends to work less, more expensive tends to work better. I haven't found anything nicely in the middleground personally. Also do consider a break-away collar with a bell on it, that way whatever your cat hunts on has a chance to be alerted and your cat will be less at risk of strangling themselves. Good luck

I'm in the same boat, because if I could afford it, I'd have a cat sanctuary.😢 My mama cat was feral, & now she's been domesticated since giving birth to a litter, and I'm taking her to get spayed.. but it is concerning when I read a flea collar box, and it said something about if they're nursing.. I let her go outside at times (to drink water from a little fountain/birdbath outside & eat grass, use the restroom outside for kicks lol, but I bring her right back in.. I'm so anxious about her getting pregnant again.. im trying to get her spayed ASAP.

@@debraadams7164 what? with all due respect you don’t know me or how i take care of my dog. she has IMHA and goes to the vet every four weeks, and around three times a year before she got sick. if they felt i was wasting their time they could’ve done something about it, but it was obvious that every emergent case was attended to and the staff were willing to help me. i wasn’t going to wait until i could get an appointment or phone call with my dog’s primary and IM vets to ask pertinent questions. of course i would ask about vaccines, medication schedule and dosing, weight management, etc. if it wasn’t within their scope they would’ve told me. the vets and techs that took care of my dog when she was on the verge of death were exceptionally kind and competent. i paid the hospital thousands to keep her alive, of course im going to ask relevant questions.

@456puff yes, as an owner of small dogs we don't use those. We've ended up on nexguard tablets here, they don't appear to have any side effects and work well. Of course these things also depend on where you live, some places have more bugs and parasites than others. Additionally, if your pet tends to lunge for..
