I never became fully Amish at 18 we have a choice to join the church and become fully Amish or leave! You have the choice, it's encouraged to see the English people as they call you! And yes I went and saw the world, joined the peace corps a year! And when I returned to paradise p.a.! Near York and Adams county p.a.! And at first my family was glad to see me until I told them I was not joining the church! Then I was shunned even though they encouraged me to SEE THE WORLD ! A very strange people they are! That was back in 79' I'm 59' now and have not seen my family since 82' in 82' I tried one last time for my family to at least talk to me but they refused... the preacher shunned me and said I was an outcast to the Amish community and not welcomed any where near them! I told the preacher that I had dirt on him and said he too would be shunned by his very own people that respected him and listened to every word he said like he was a living God! He laughed and said give it your best shot, 2 week's later I mailed out 120 mailings of him entering and leaving the triple XXX movie theater 6 times over a weeks time, almost every day! He was thrown out of the Amish creed and shunned by his very own people! They believe the English people as they call you, have no value system what so ever! And believe you fall short of ever seeing God after you DIE! I'm so glad I got away from those people! I even took my wife's last maiden name when we got married! To further distance myself from the Amish sect...

Thanks so much for answering my question!! I can’t believe no one else asked about the power/electricity & if they still do not use it?! I thought that would be a given question but maybe the answer is given as well. I went on a buggy ride once in 1990’s, it was so fun!! Hugs!!

This is so good! I feel like there are so many misconceptions about people who decide to live an Amish lifestyle. YOU guys are helping to educate a communicate. I would love to have the opportunity to go past the tourist walls and visit an Amish community/family!

That's seriously the best thing to do - just go into the actual locals environment and try to contribute/relate. So much we can all learn doing that!

I LOVED learning about the Amish! I went to Gettysburg, PA when I was younger and we went through an Amish town & learned about the history ..soo awesome!

REALLY can’t get enuf of Avalyn cus she is growing sooo fast before our eyes. So glad you spent time with Amish. I stay in touch with family who cared for me after an accident. Memories I treasure today especially weaving skills. Great learning vlog with lots of precious giggles from the star ........ Avalyn.

First time viewer. Napanee used to be in my own back yard. Part of my stomping ground growing up. I never lived there but use to know well. Of course that was a lifetime ago. I remember Amish Acres very well. I hope you enjoyed your visit there. I hope to get back there soon.

A month without a cell phone? Soooooo easy!! Mine broke and I haven't replaced it. I am absolutely LOVING life without it. No more robo calls, telemarketing calls, spoofed number calls, political survey calls. No more endless notification buzzing. Errands go WAY faster. Life is more peaceful. When you go to WV, consider visiting Green Bank. It is truly getting away from it all b/c cell phones, microwaves, and other frequency-emitting items are not allowed due to the significant sensitivity of one of the largest satellite dishes in the world that is there.

Amish are all over this state, but there is so much beauty in Indiana! I'm native to the southern part and there is so much nature and exploring to do. I grew up in little Nashville and there's 2 state parks in my county, including the largest park in the state.

@@TheJurgys southern indiana is hilly and tree covered... lots of hiking trails! nashville, indiana offers small town shops, foods, and hand made items... its most beautiful in the fall, but i love it there any time of year.. hope you get to check it out sometime!

Very cool and just subscribed !! If you ever get to Pennsylvania, check out Lancaster County. There is a huge population of Amish and Mennonite. Kudos to both of you and your beautiful daughter. You are both going to be awesome parents. I can also see more little ones in your future. Maybe a little brother.....lol

When in Columbus OH we visited an area with a lot of Amish and Mennonites, where we visited the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center in Millersburg, OH, behalt.com. They have a mural which shows the history of the Amish/Mennonite movement painted by Heinz Gaugel, it was educational and fun. They also had an Amish school and a sample barn with some different carriages. It was run by a Mennonite woman and an Amish man. The Amish man invited our family to visit his home where we had some ice cream and lemon aide and he explained about some differences between different Amish communities. There are a bunch of different Amish, he was in the New Order Amish which allows members to ride in cars (but not own one) and have solar power for some basic electrical use in home. It was a lot of fun and we learned a bunch about their lives. I like what you said about the neighbor saying, they'll be home soon, like in a couple of hours. Excellent!

Geeks Life Some of my Mom’s family lived in Goshen, Indiana. We went to visit them in 1972. My Mom was actually born in Bedford, Indiana.

We have a few Amish friends. I live in Fort Wayne so right near "Amish country" We got invited to their daughter's wedding. However, this was the "English" wedding and not the full Amish one. Basically, this was a reception type of thing and we were not allowed to go to the actual event. She asked my mom to take pictures of the food, dresses, rooms, etc but not with anyone in them. On another note, my dad is a doctor. He gets a lot of Amish that comes in. Especially in clinics. He is a nephrologist, kidney doctor, who deals with dialysis. A lot of them use these life saving mesures in order to prolong their health. However, there are some who will not use such thing. They descibe it as how we have differnet levels of religion. Some people may pray every day, some will go to church every sunday, etc the Amish have different levels. Some use phones and drive cars for their business. Some don't even have a phone on hteir property. Some usemodern medicince, whole some do not.

Concerning shunning: It males a big difference if somebody joined the Amish and then leaves or if this person never joined. If a person leaves who grew up Amish but never joined the Amish Church there is no shunning except for the most conservatine affiliations and even there it depends very much on the family and normally it's not very consistent. Shunning in general is used for people who joined and later broke their vow. For more see e.g. this: amishamerica.com/shunning/

@@TheJurgys Yes, I'm connected with some Amish. I'm from Germany from a region where a dialect is spoken that is quite similar to Pennsylvania German, which means that I can understand everything they say, all the same if it is English, Pennsylvania German or Standard German. I 'm also a rather conservative Christian. After having read a lost of scholarly books about the Amish, two and a half years ago, I went on a three month tour through the US, visiting and stayed with Amish and other Old Order people from different affiliations and other groups like the Hutterites. I got the addresses of several of them though the Mennonite-Your-Way hospitality service but there are only a few Old Orders on this directory. Staying with an Old Order family is not as easy as it sounds because Old Orders are busy like hell and it is not so easy to help them. Easily one becomes a burden. And being well informed about them avoids a lot stupid or even embarrassing questions. In the end I could help some folks translating some texts into good Standard German, because most Old Orders are not so good in Standard German as their mother tongue is always a German dialect. And through translating and proofreading I'm still in contact with some of them. By the way, your last name sounds somehow Swiss or German, was it Jürgy or Jürgie originally?

Lol, 100% Amish have cell phones. They will claim its for work, since its a starting trend that Amish can't live off of just farming these days. So the Men tend to get construction type jobs. But most AMish have cell phones these days.

They aren't truly real Amish, but Mennonites. The real Amish are still pretty much hard core and do not even use electricity. There are still a lot in Lancaster County, Pa.

There are more than 40 Amish affiliations and the use of technology is quite different in these groups. There Amish affilaition that allow cell phones while others don't.

Someone should educated the Amish community about how you can very legally stop paying income taxes. In come tax is voluntary. It has been since it started. The schools don't teach this, because why would they?
