The Shade of Evening Trees of the Warlocks can explain the origin of the Black Oily Stone.

This analysis is based off my popular r/ASOIAF post entitled "I would bet money Shade of the Evening does this... v.2.0", which speculates on the true origins of the oily black stone including the Seastone chair of the Ironborn culture. / spoilers_extended_i_wo...

The frequency of worm and tunnel references in this franchise has me paranoid. Sort of like Gandalf after returning from the Balrog: "Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day."

It's also interesting, that the weirwoods, which grow rather in the north where the white walkers come from - have red leaves - the color of fire, while the shade of evening trees, which rather grow where the dragons come from have blue leaves - the color of ice.

This was a good theory and only mildly terrifying until I remembered how Melisandre mentioned that the Iron Born worship a demon, and how the wierwood are called demons over and over and over. AND how Melisandre looks at Patchface and seems to think he is also a demon of some kind. If only we’d actually gotten all the parts of the world of Ice and Fire that had actually been written. *sigh*

Melisandre has alot of misinterpretation. I think she misinterprets it. Jacquen calls a weirwood tree a Fire God in the second book at Harrenhall. Also, maybe the dragon glass is leaves of a stone turned weirwood tree, probably that's why it is referred to as frozen fire.

I like how this comes together, even though it’s a little different from what I suspect the oily black stone to be. My main issue with the idea that the oily black stone is petrified shade of the evening wood is the description of the blocks of stone that make up the ruins of Yeen. They’re described as so large that it’d take a dozen elephants to move them. Where would they get blocks of shade of the evening that large? Neither tree is described as being able to be that large, that I recall. That’s the thing that makes me skeptical that they could be made of petrified wood. For now, I suspect the oily black stone is what happens when Dragonstone decays, releasing some kind of cursed substance indicative of the unnatural, cursed nature of dragons and dragon related technology as a whole. I think Asshai and Yeen, as well as a few other places, were very ancient settlements of pre-Valyrian dragonriders, as either precursors or descendant off-shoots of the Dawn Empire. I feel like it might point to how the magic/technology of man-made/unnatural things is cursed, and all of these societies fall into ruin. The shade of the evening trees may be what happens when the influence of man-like force feeding the white trees human blood and abusing the green sight-corrupts a Weirwood network, turning it so black it eats light and released toxic oils, just like decayed dragon stone. Shade of the Evening is corrupted Weirwood paste, by this logic. I think making the blocks at Yeen cubes may have been a stylistic choice, and the cubes were molded where they lay, being so impractical to move. Edit: I wanted to add it might also be the other way around, if my suspicion is on the right track. That is to say, weirwoods might actually be the contaminated version of shade of the evening trees, since they’re the ones that have seemingly suffered the most abuses of the mechanisms of men.

Remember when the 3 eyed raven was trying to get bran to fly in the dream, when bran looked down he saw thousands of corpses impaled on the large icicles. In my opinion the 3 eyed raven doesnt know exactly who hes looking for, he just throws out a big net trying to wrangle and find as many greenseer potentials as possible. I think Euron was once a candidate because of how magically inclined he seems to be, he just never had his 3 eyed opened and couldnt fly hence he crashed down and was impaled in his dream and the 3 eyed raven moved on. That's way he tells his brother he used to dream of being able to fly, and that maybe he actually could. So euron could have been a greenseer and still has some of its potential powers.

I love this video. If the theory is correct, it dramatically simplifies a huge branch of "oily stone" speculation into an easily understood package that further reinforces the duality of A Song of Ice and Fire. As the community has gotten better at decoding GRRM's symbolism and indirect references, it seems like a lot of theory-crafting results in "more complexity!", but I suspect that a truly elegant interpretation of ASoIaF will flow from the elegant simplicity of work like this. Thank you!

Great theory! Good job on the research. Never fear the darkness, Bran. The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.-Bloodraven to Bran ADWD Especially like the idea of the weirwood roots appearing as krakens or worms/serpents. It really does fit with a lot of things GRRM hints at in the story.

Awesome first episode! I’ve always looked at the weirwoods and shade trees as an inversion of one another but always wondered if the “ebony” that we see in the door at the house of black and white was in fact made from ebony, or from the shade trees. I was always of the opinion that unlike the weirwoods, the shade trees do not petrify, but rather rot or “turn to dust.” If that’s not the case then I can definitely see the connection between the oily black stone and shade trees playing out. It makes sense then that we see for instance on the iron islands, both the sea stone chair and naggas ribs in such close proximity to one another. As if they are not separate but closely intertwined. Take the kingsmoot, an almost democratic process by which the lords of the iron islands gather at naggas ribs to select a king who will sit the sea stone chair. Very intriguing material. Really excited for future episodes and discussion!

Zachary Grinacoff Interesting idea that it's the source of the ebony at the Faceless temple. I don't think it fits beyond a superficial level, but it's always nice reading original ideas, and it def could turn out that you're right. Can't recall where I heard this, but there's a somewhat convincing theory the Nagas bones are actually weirwood, and it's so old it's petrified at a level seen nowhere else. Although the tree on Blackwood land, the poisoned dead tree, is described to be at the early stages of becoming petrified similar to Nagas bones. Not sure if this theory is correct but it's far from a longshot.

THIS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING VIDEO! It makes so much sense. Like, some of the cities we know about are stone, others are wood. But the thing about stone is that you have to mine it. Where would these people be getting this oily black stone from unless part of the earth is made from it? It could come from the sky but I doubt there would be enough from the sky for full cities. But a wood city, that over the years turned to stone, or a wood throne that was carved and then eventually turned to stone: that makes sense.

Valyrian Steel (which is described as dark or grey) = Petrified Ebony-Black Wierwood Tree material + bathed in Magical Dragon Fire (+ perhaps blood-magic sacrifice). The Swords & armour of The Others = Petrified White Wierwood Tree + bathed in Magical Ice Dragon Ice breath (+ perhaps blood magic sacrifice). This is all just a theory. But nobody knows how to make Valyrian Steel because it just is not steel! It’s Petrified Wierwood material! Plus, it makes it a great symbol for fiery sword symbolism. The Wierwoods are the symbolic *Fire of The Gods* in this story. I think I remember there being a vision or dream that Bran has about someone firing Wierwood arrows. So we know that it can be weaponized!
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 лет назад
So you are actually catching onto something that both LmL and I have discussed on Twitter in the past. The possibility that the trees are part of the ingredients for Valyrian steel. I think in one instance Valyrian steel is also said to drink light. Its also possible Dawn may actually be created through the use of weirwood. We have seen a few things used in sigils that also support this concept, particularly House Forrester. www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=I3YSlkDH&id=298A290B4549769420D04F1437D281E763D5E20D&thid=OIP.hWhlqrwWuO2BknraO2OVQAHaI6&mediaurl=http%3a%2f%2fawoiaf.westeros.org%2fimages%2ff%2ff6%2fHouse_Forrester.png&exph=659&expw=548&q=house+forrester&simid=608052154707869778&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0

@@TheDisputedLands There is also a theory that the black and white trees are inverse images of each other. The inspiration of these trees comes from the Kabbalah. According to sources from this mystical knowledge, the tree of knowledge and the tree of immortality are like this. So the trees that the Shade of the Evening come from has the potential to grant immortality, while the weirwood network grant knowledge. Now if we see the motifs of the Garden of Eden in ASOIAF, the children of the forest who drank of the Light of the Morning gained knowledge, but at the cost of shortened lifespans. These who drank the shade of the evening gained immortality, but at the price of stagnating. Now could I be on to something?
@jsull81
@jsull81 4 года назад
@@elyseenger2646 I definitely think so!
@elyseenger2646
@elyseenger2646 4 года назад
@@jsull81 It would also explain the story of the God-Emperors of the Dawn, and The Bloodstone Emperor's actions if the GEOTD was stagnating because there was a widespread practice of drinking shade of the evening among the nobles and the royal family. I can see the parallels between the Bloodstone Emperor and Leto II Atreides in that vein. Both took harsh, decisive steps to keep humanity alive, even if it meant driving people out of their native land into unknown terrain.

Question. If you made a wine out of the black/blue trees and called it "shade of the evening." What if you made a wine of the white/red trees be called? Light of the Morning? What would it look like? If some one in the story WAS drinking a wine made with weirwood sap, what sort of effect so you think it would have? Honestly. How this question and the evidence in the book regarding it has never been questioned is beyond me.

I heard you on Robert's stream last night and I thought this theory was interesting and definitely possible and sensible but I was not 100% convinced. Having watched this longer explanation and given it a lot more thought I am now convinced you are indeed correct. In fact now that I am convinced I cannot recall what possible reasons for doubt I could have had.

I do not have any plans with Order of the Greenhand, but appreciate the feedback. For the moment I don't plan on having a Patreon. I asked this question on another channel a while back but it never got answered. Do you think that the vast cave network in planetos was made by a root system of some sort of World Tree?
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 лет назад
It is funny that you ask that question. In Valyria, there was said to be Fire Wyrms which no one has actually seen, there are some hints that something similar to large worms caused the underground walkways beneath Castle Black as they are called "Worm Ways" No one has seen these worms either. I think the possibility is there because GRRM has likened ww roots to worms on several occasions. I can't say this is the case, but I can say this has also crossed my mind

Awesome video, I'm looking forward to watching more! When you talked about Corlys Velaryon going to exploring the carved trees of the Ifequevron, do you think he might've learned some things from them? I think this because his bastard son Addam, went to the Isle of Faces to consult the Green Men during the DotD, so Corlys might've told him the power of sight from the trees.
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 лет назад
Hey thanks. It's for sure a possibility and one I hadn't thought of. I mean, Addam is heavily implied to be his son, so he might have shared a few things with him, but for the moment there isn't too much to go off. Great thoughts!

I dont think it was a stump due to the first men fortifications already built on the soil and due to the size of the fist itself. I do think high heart is very significant though.

WoW! You are truly next level insightful to GRRM's writing style and aren't afraid to cal a red herring. Instead you use facts, patterns, logic and serious intuition. I was fortunate to be gifted Got whilst on bed rest pregnancy with my first, sweet baby...I'm not only a fan, I have chunks of my entire 'adult' life in this series and really I can't stress your sheer brilliance. I'm about to ask the *only* questions I ever have regarding the series (book and TV)... what are your thoughts about the iron wood door(s) that seal the deceased Kings of the North (Lyanna notwithstanding) and altho a pale weirwood any thoughts on Ygg? Your channel appeared in my suggested this eve...and I'm hooked! By the old gods and the new, I thought that damned door had a purpose or reason (subplot/ending) of its very own. I haven't touched the books I'm quite some time ... it's not like I've been waiting 20 years for an ending. Jeez! One would think the man signed a contract or three to get these books out! LoL! I'm in awe of not only the nuances you pick up, you're ability to state and reason them so succinctly...Just wow! Sure hope you plan to be on YT a very long time. Really having something new and exciting at this point in the Game? I adore how you ever so slightly your reading parts and pieces from your narratives. Effortless to follow and a lovely voice also. I hope the manager is in Ms. Lands has receipts no request needed. All the best to you, your channel. Keep up the incredible work! Oh! I subbed. I so subbed! The HPL catches, etc... you had me at the oily black stones being petrified dark word! Genuinely surprised, impressed and thrilled! OMG! Sorry this got too long, but dang! It just got exciting again. ❄️🔥

Hey Downy, thank you so much for those kind words! So here are my thoughts on the Ironwood tree and this is purely speculative. I believe the author had initially wanted the Ironwoods to be the black magical tree. If you look at how Ironwoods are used, this tree is mentioned a total of nine times in the first book of the series.. twice In the prologue alone. Now in the rest of the series Ironwood is only mentioned three other times in all four other books combined. If you look at the theories on the Ironwoods out there in the forums, many people believe the Ironwood tree and the Shade Tree are the same tree. I don't think this is the case. But instead I think the author had intitially wanted to use the Ironwood tree in the manner of the Shade of the Evening and changed his mind for one reason or another. In the second book, then we start hearing about this new mysterious tree. This is all purely speculative. With the crypts the Ironwood doors are most likely meant to be symbolic and meant to symbolize black wood. These are just my opinions, but good question! Thanks so much for watching!
