As someone whos only gotten into Homestuck fairly recently due to an interest in old internet culture and such this classpect reads less like the fictional lore for other things I've known and more like the cosmology of some religion I've never heard of due it being THAT esoteric and complex. I'm all here for it.

Homestuck borrows heavily from gnostic mythology. The aspects are adapted from ideas found in gnosticism. One way of explaining them is that they represent fundamental building blocks of a story. Since homestuck is predicated on being a web comic which is a fictional story, they exist as fundamental laws of the universe.

Ngl as a light player the only one i really disagreed with was Life- like- Life can be great and all but it kinda sucks y'know... If i were to phrase it like a person i guess it could be, and i am deeply sorry for this: "Hot bod... Terrible personality..." @w@ But in less vulgar terms- Life is learning, Life is growth, but Life is rigidity and Life is limitation, the systems in place that rule over us, the status quo, and the status quo sucks and needs change- the same way the rules only make sense if they have a purpose and are not simply the roots of an aging tree, even as rotting. Life is alluring and attractive because it allows for meaning to be and flower, it gives structure to chaos and breeds true understandment based on that which is observable by Light. But too much of it and you find yourself immobile and stiff, unable to venture out and explore or build, held back by the branches that otherwise would allow for you to reach higher places. Life is structuring but cranky and senile, stuck in mindsets of former glory and attempting to conserve a space that may never been but in its head. Now- For Rage i agree 1:1 in how i see it- Rage to me is a bit "stupid" but understandable. The ultimate goal of Rage and Light are the same, but the manner in which they do it is not. Rage rejects stucture, rejects the establishment of steps to ensure a change of pace, and focuses itself entirely on the destruction of the former status quo without ever concerning itself with what will come after, them seeing it as self-evident and self-fulfilling which to me is absolutely not the case. Destruction without parallel construction lets the seeds of the dying tree just killed to sow themselves among the land without nothing to stop their growth, and eventually the whole house of cards established ontop of the plane would be utterly destroyed by the growing trees before it could consolidate into stone. Rage is idealistic, but has the right thought in mind. Void is the meaning of Light- the great quest, in many ways more than simply sisyphianly. Light only travels through Void, a world of Light would be a boring world, when everything is known and self-evident nothing is. And finally, yeah i think Space definitely eats bugs, it is fucking weird and immense and at times incomprehensible but god if it isnt weirdly attractive...

I was sceptical, but good job on a novel, rigorous take on classpecting! I’m excited to see what the follow-ups will look like. There are some relational examples which feel cherry-picked to fit the pattern, but the whole thing works solidly enough on a sufficient majority of counts that it definitely feels like there’s something here and I’m looking forward to letting it marinate. And thanks for the praise! Though I would like to push back a bit on the framing that the treatise merely formalises and teaches concepts from the pre-existing, decentralised vortex of analysis. I do of course do this for the notions i perceive to be solid so as to give us all a shared alphabet to work with and submit them to the eternally probing flame of academic rigours, but the aspect trinity and and the behaviour of aspects as tinted instantiations of a cardinal pair are importantly novel structural ideas to my mind. Ones which at least strain against the bulwark of dualism no less. Concepts to be covertly seeded into the discourse by way of Trojan horse (As well as further innovations regarding the classes). The people who continue to yell at me for this do seem to agree. Anyway, this nitpick got a bit longer than intended, very promising work

I'm only half an hour in but I just want to make note that I've always thought of the relationships between the aspects to be more similar to Pokemon Type matchups rather than simply "X is opposite to Y". Some get more relations than others, some complement, some oppose, some have no relation at all. They're so nebulous and vaguely defined that specifically saying dualism or poles is how they're related feels too... well, rigid. They are essentially 12 independent forces that sometimes cooperate, sometimes conflict, and sometimes simply sit at a standstill.

preface: as a psychology student, i really admire dewdrop's work, as it's stated within the document they think hussie was onto something in his categorization of childhood struggles. i agree. and if you decided to use their work as a warning, that's on you for denying whatever creativity could have come out of it. calling it a manifesto because they put a lot of work into it -- because it actually fulfills the deep desire for extra knowledge that people in this fandom for years have looked for -- is a bit of a cop-out. i respect your opinion on the matters that involve your opinion, but stating that something explicitly IS these things (unhinged, a manifesto, demented, hyperfixated) rather than stating you BELIEVE they are those things... while spending an hour and a half talking about the same damn subject... i'm sure you're self-aware enough to understand how that's quite hypocritical. i'll be back within a day or so when i have an hour and a half to listen, and i will give this its time like i try to with most of the hs content that comes my way, positive or negative. but as a long-standing homestuck fan creator who has worked on the official music album, i'd like to take the moment i always should to say this: *mocking other people's hard work, their ideas, or their art is only a reflection of the person doing the mocking, never of the person being mocked.* plenty of comments on things like my derse dreamers or flare lyricovers have been called cringe or otherwise stupid by either the original posters, or by people who feel it was "hyperfixated" to share interpretations of the art. i treasure the old comments, poetry, and more that people refer to as cringe. if you continue to do any works involving any creators of any kind of art, i hope you remember the people like me that treasure those you consider "unhinged," and i hope you give yourself permission to healthily explore whatever passions come your way.
@FunkMcLovin
@FunkMcLovin 2 месяца назад
@@horizonanadyomene the reason I shared Dewdrops work is because of the interest that I have for it. I disagree with many of their conclusions but ultimately I included it in the discussion both because of its size and because "here are some creators I like" a bunch of times in a row wasn't interesting. It's only fair to give voice to someone like that. They are a comprehensive and dedicated writer. I read their 166 pages and my life was better for it. I hope the way I spoke about Dewdrops work got people interested in it, I was not trying to dismiss it out of hand, though I realize it was the only part of that section that was hyperbolic in that way. I hope when you view the full product you realize I am no less unhinged than anyone else I have made reference to. If the takeaway from this piece is "I want to tear down a passionate writer" then I have failed. You mention the irony of referring to Dew as unhinged for discussing the same thing I am- That was the intent. Thanks for your comment!!

@FunkMcLovin Your self awareness is deeply refreshing, and I'm glad to now know your view of D3wDr0p's work. I agree, I really enjoy the footnotes and extensive nature of the document and the way they "type like they talk" as they explain (they do a LOT of explaining lol). I always appreciated Bladekindeyewear's analysis and theories around inversion and how it affects a character's relationship with themself. But beyond that? Nothing. Lots of theoretical ideas around the relationship between an aspect and their "opposite" but when the whole story has most of these "opposites" rarely interact, I never came away from classpect theory with a better understanding of the character's interpersonal relationships. honestly, seeing the aspects being in a relationship other then opposite to another aspect is seriously very refreshing. for me its more nuanced this way and it opens a new view after years of stagnation with the same dual mentality. not like its bad, of course, but as youve proven here aspects are more then just oppositees of each other. i also like the idea of one-sided "relationships" with some aspects, how some might feel fascinated by the other but the other doesn't and so on, you explained it very well there. this theory is very practical if trying to get in character with homestuck ocs for example tbh. with this new way of seeing the aspects i and many others aswell can juggle with the characters relationships. it really makes things soooo much more easier for me to comprehend. if i had issues with writing my ocs interactions, now i have more inspiration!!

So I was contemplating getting into homestuck. You all seem mentally ill. I like it. Well, looking in from outside, I'd say that the aspects are less things with one identity and more tools of creation by the reader. Let me explain. I like to remember that a piece of art exists not as much as its physical form as it does as the emotions felt by the consumer. But the thing is, each person who consumes that work will have different feelings and perceptions of it. In a way, each consumer helps to grow the work, helps to create it. This is the essence of Art's subjectivity. The aspects aim to take advantage of this. As is said early in the video, one appeal of homestuck is as a sort of Fandom Playground. A place to create. They're purposely subjective. Unless someone can find everyone who's ever read anything homestuck and average all of their ideas of the aspects, across all points in time, somehow, the aspects remain undefined. edit; just took the quiz, I'm Viro, virgo/derse/heart. Looking into the symbolism of each aspect, I think I've got a pretty strong connection to both heart and mind, and it tears me apart. Yet, over the years, the more I realize that the self is emergent from the world and the world is emergent from the self. Vibes come from logic, logic comes from vibes. Space is also a pretty strong candidate, in that I often feel disconnected from the world and that thought is what's really real. I am an engineer, a philosopher, and a meditator. I have such insanity occuring in my head, and I want to make it real, and recognize that logic is the only way. As such, I continuously think. In that, I guess, my mind is emergent from my heart. I see pure logic as too insensitive and sometimes misjudging of the subjective, and I see pure vibes as being worthless when no logic is applied. It is their harmony that makes the world. Maybe none of us is truly any singular aspect. Maybe we're all a range, each one describing a part of ourselves, but not the whole. A living thing may have lots of carbon, but if it was entirely carbon, it would not be alive. Ok after that round of bullshit, I think what it is, using the aspects as a sort of personality classification, that my mom is somewhere between time and heart and my dad is somewhere between mind and space, making me, getting a lot from both of them, quite the specimen. Or maybe it's just a 2000s webcomic, and I'm putting this whole thing on too much of a pedestal. Alas, it has helped me undestand my own flaws more. Self-actualization is nearer, even if it will never be truly reached. Such is art.
@keaton5101
@keaton5101 Месяц назад
Classes and Aspects were, first and foremost, made to define characters' role in a story. If you want to figure out what fits you the most, it might be helpful to imagine your life as a story, and think about "arc" matters to you the most. When i was younger, i associated myself with Mind; until somewhat recently i felt i leaned toward Breath, and now i think Sylph of Heart is closest to what i resonate with. I have always had a strong belief in thinking things through and trying to be logical, trying to be Just, but it was always rooted in deep self-analysis, self-criticism, self-betterment. I've always cared a lot about freedom and openness in regards to relationships, that was one of my biggest struggles for a very long time, but most of the freedom that i tend to focus on now is freedom of emotion and identity. More or less my default way of seeing things is in terms of Heart, i'm endlessly self-reflective to an almost obsessive degree. My answer to self-actualization is a romantic, all-encompassing self-love, because it means my greatest ally is with me 100% of the time. I tend to be drawn to the friend-therapist role, because i have a desire to be a fixer for people, to help them appreciate themselves the way i do. You don't need to have one answer. I believe that everyone resonates with all aspects in some measure. It may be helpful to think of Classpect Titles less as something that you ARE, and more something that describes your patterns of thought. It might even be true to say that I WAS leaning more Sylph of Breath in the past because those concepts were just more present in my mind. I hope you enjoy your potential journey of getting into Homestuck. If you're getting into aspects I do highly recommend reading the comic so that you can get a good feel of what's canon and what's fan-conjecture, because there is a lot of fan-conjecture, especially in regards to the Classes and Aspects of characters who don't get much screen time. Funk's recommendations in this video are pretty good, but I'd like to especially bump dahniwitchoflight's tumblr blog (usually the first result for "homestuck x aspect" on google), OptimisticDuelist's YT channel, and Ouroborista's Treatise on Classpecting video/document because they are all excellent.

This was WONDERFUL, I truly did not expect it to go so in-depth. And for a bit I was worried that the essay would be a little too antagonistic towards dualism, but hwhat at least I got from all this is that dualism is too liming and we should and CAN see beyond its constraints THE FACT YOU COVERED ALL 144 RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CLASSPECTS IS WILD, but it was also just so interesting seeing you talk about them all with exmaples! Also very fun to see chat go by and reflect on themselves as you went through everything. My introduction to classpect theory was Wakraya's blog, but I mostly read the parts about classes and not aspects so idk jsut how much she relied on dualism. DEFINATELLY looking foward to the sequels. AMAZING job and happy SAHcon!! ^^

2 things: 1: This has yet again revived the spark in me that wants to make a homestuck ttrpg. This could likely be attributed to homestuck having excellent worldbuilding that is BEGGING to be played with(as this video shows, half of it is dedicated to showing off all the interactions of just this particular system) and a plot that sucks. im not gonna do it, but that little seedling will exist forever and be watered by videos like this, and yes, i will be watching the followups thank you very much. 2: the whole system reminds me of color pie analysis from magic the gathering. sure, it is very different, there being an odd number of colors means dualism cant exactly exist, and having just under half the elements means you have around just under a quarter of relationships to define, which is a slightly smaller undertaking done by an arguably larger group. the relationship thing though is quite similar. mtg is much more paired down, but you can see the through line of how each element interacts with the other. theres also the whole idea of it being a circular system to represent a vague view of the world, one that is begging to be expanded upon. mtg does this mostly through hybrids, extrapolating what a red/white would imply when its not a green. homestuck, being much more, uses the class to further refine it, which class seems to be representing the actions characters choose to take due to their aspect, allowing for much more complexity even after factoring in the magnitude between five and twelve. Overall great video, and cant wait to see the rest of your analysis

As devout classpecter watching the interest in this part of HS legacy fade over time, it makes me very happy to find from time to time other dedicated classpecters who are sharing their opinions and views. It is a novelty to me for aspects to be viewed through musical lenses, though these ideas are definitely adding more tints to the beautiful complexity of aspects. But there is another idea I don’t see discussed too often, even though in Eastern Europe’s part of the fandom it became quite frequent: classpect profile theory. In short, this theory states that each person manifests their agency in every aspect, but if the title and its inversion are the main roles of the person, then the profile classpect roles are situational, when there is no other person around whose title classpect would be more fitting to deal with the aspect problem at hand. In my opinion, this theory suggests how fraymotifs actually may work “in real life” and I am surprised why it isn’t discussed more often. Maybe, I am just a sucker for system point of view (can relate to Dewdrop in a way). I would actually love to talk about classpects in depth, since majority of people in my city are novice to these concepts… So, yeah, my original question was: what do you think about classpect profiles, have you heard of this topic, would you be interested in discussing it privately or in future videos? I apologize for the long comment and send greetings from the Mage of Blood.

Describing the relations of each aspect in first person has shown me a new potential lens in the ezod. Each individual sign has an aspect and a sign class tied to the aspect that alternia wants each sign to think about and adopt. That means there are not one, but two signs for each side of an aspects relation to each other. For example, Liblo and Libo embody how heart sees mind.

I have never known a single thing about Homestuck, nor have I really felt a need to look into it until now. This video just appeared in my recommended, I'm 13 miniutes in and I'm really interested in this classpect system. I'll update this comment once I'm done watching. EDIT: Haven't watched the whole video yet, the music theory parts really confused me. You have started me on falling down the Homestuck rabbit hole in general, so I'm going to fall further and probably revisit this video once I understand some other stuff a bit more.

@Funk McLovin You made a pretty severe error in the Time/Hope section. Time players seem to frequently fixate on Hope. Caliborn is obsessed with Jake, and Dave has unquestioned adoration for Barack Obama (as shown in the epilogues).

this is a very interesting video! i'm about one third of the way through as of this comment's original posting, but i have so much shit to say that im just gonna post it now and update it as the video goes on. im not a Tumblr user, and i dont typically watch homestuck-related RU-vid videos, so many of the names mentioned in this video are new to me. ive been hanging out on r/althomestuck for several years now under the username P_Skaia, though, so the name DewDr0p certainly rings a bell. now, as a first thought, i personally feel as though you might've gone out of order with your videos. i am of the opinion that Aspect, at least on a character level, doesn't hold much meaning outside of how the character's Class interacts with it. for instance, one could expect Hope players to have certain traits derived from their Aspect, then be thoroughly confused upon discovering Eridan, since he's a Prince who destroys his Aspect. on another note, your questioning of the dualistic system is pretty eye-opening, to say the least. i've been struggling to justify it in my own interpretations for a while, holding onto it for little reason other than convention. im going to try deviating from it a little from now on. i also agree with the narrative-focused view of Aspect. i believe that Classpect primarily describes a character's narrative role and journey, instead of their personality. for this reason, i find it kinda pointless to try to apply Classpect theory to real people. this has lead to Dewdr0p and i butting heads many times in the past. speaking of Dewdr0p, i'd find it hard to believe that *anyone* derives more inspiration from Jung, specifically his ideas on archetypal psychology. in fact, from the conversations ive had with them and what i read from their brochure's earlier drafts, Dewdr0p seems to be using Classpects as a basis for a new archetypal framework. they have expressed on multiple occasions that Homestuck canon isn't as important to their ideas as how applicable said ideas are to real people. for this reason, i consider his framework to be pretty much its own thing apart from Homestuck lore analysis. Edit 1 (current time 50:30): while i agree that the geometric Aspect wheel is restrictive and reductive, i don't entirely agree with your vibes theory. it ultimately comes down to comparing Aspects to each other in a vacuum, and, as i've said earlier in this comment, i don't believe thinking about Aspects without considering how Classes shape them to be very productive at all, since a Class can drastically change how an Aspect presents itself. Classes are what bring out the different sides of the Aspects more-so than an Aspect's interactions with other Aspects. for instance, the lack of understanding between John and Tavros may just be due to how a Page, who has to struggle to grow into their Aspect, has trouble understanding an Heir, who is so naturally in-tune with the same Aspect. This lack of understanding also runs contrary to the fact that the same notes from different octaves harmonize so well with one another.

I have much to say that I'll save for later but I have the opposite notion. Aspect influences class. Aspect is something classes gain access to, Aspects are "forces of nature." Class is secondary because class is necessarily personal and aspect is necessarily general. Tavros and John embody Breath in different ways, but the Breath-ness is fundamental in a way that no class is. Broadly speaking, I think most classpecting is too focused on class. I don't find class interesting myself, I've already read quite a lot on things like Jungian archetypes and it doesn't click with me. Aspect more than class shapes the characters' relations with their stories in Homestuck, class just feels tacked-on in some ways. Look at a character like Vriska. What is of more importance to her narrative arc? The fact that she happens to have thief-based superpowers or the very strong theming around luck, fortune, and the very notion of "positive outcomes" in general? I'm sure some would disagree with me, but I feel confident saying that Aspect is the more important factor in this and Homestuck's other stories. Thank you for your comment!!

this is so interesting, and it fits so well!! however, i did notice over the course of the redacted section that class can also have a huge impact on inter-player relations, and sometimes override aspect relations. for example, i think that a heart player can reasonably like themselves, however since the only heart player we see is a prince (who inherently hate themselves and shun their aspect) i think the data is a bit skewed. bards and princes are very poor lenses into an aspect. however, this provides an excellent basic framework which could be paired with a similar diagram of inter-class relations in order to create a full theory!

The idea of "Nature" vs "Meaning" isn't just applicable to HS. Meaning is built from the relationship between natures or identities. These identities are defined by the perceiver's perception of the relationship between all identities. Whenever we dig deep on anything, be it art to physics, it occurs to me more that nothing at all should work, and that there are few reasons that it should. This miracle is what existence is built upon, and to me, is proof either that God exists or that this life is a lie. It could also prove both.

After watching the majority of this, Ive been inspired to make my own understanding of classpects based in relation to each other that do not necessarily correspond to canon relations, but more so, physical. An example I have come up with is that blood can only be perceived because of light, which is to put it abstractly, our bonds with people only exist because of the informational context surrounding these bonds.
@bellam5451
@bellam5451 Месяц назад
Adding on to this its not really supposed to be reflective of canon understandings and relations because I’m using it for my own story, so I’m making tweaks be it symbolic or behavioral tweaks to represent the fact that the aspects are constructed through a differing lens of subjectivity due to changing societal roles and values within my version of the Troll society

I'll write more later after ai finish but I have an idea I haven't seen anyone explore. Medium theory. I analyze classpect by whuch meduim that homestuck takes inspiration from they closely corelate to (ie, existance(time space) to cyoa, relevancy (light void) to books, idology and will (rage and hope) to theater, character/personhood (mind heart) to rpgs and roleplaying, not sure about the rest. Also unfortunately a dualist perspective, which I'm really curious about how you'll dismantle. I'll shut up and kepe watching just bad tk get that out

Do you think you’ll try and put this understanding of classpects into your own writing? This is all on the pretense that Hussie actually gave a shit when he made them anyways. I think that’s a more complicated question than what the aspects mean. That and classes, classes are so confusing.

When im Seriously writing a story I try to classpect each character. Sometimes even making characters that act the inverse their classpect to show how they docertain things wrong. If its a story about powers and such I dont always align their aspect to their powers but sometimes it does just happen. Example I have a character named Angelo Garcia, hes a super hero and a rapper he was born with the powers of a phieonox (ignore my mispellings) He uses his powers as a excuse to be audacious weather its saving peoples lives or causing problems He in a since attempts to reap the benifits of life and spread the joy life gives him to others as both a rapper and to lesser extent super hero. HEs a life player which i only really figured out after looking him over but it made since.

OK i havent finished this yet, but the comparison to music is something that i really enjoy! I first experienced the strong association of music to aspects in SKURB, the TTRPG. Here, they use music as kinda the basis for battle. They associate each Note with a Trait, and those Traits are both about how the character is (ie, pulchritude is the charm of someone ) and also a type of damage (of which you can have resistances/weaknesses to!). The Notes are also associated with the grist types, which are then associated with those Traits again. Of course, there are fraymotifs as well :) But overall the way a battle may go is heavily based on those notes being tied to traits! it was SOOO close to being more classpecty, but the author decided to treat classpects in general as a sorta "leave me out of it" thing. deeply loving this so far
