Aspendos: one of the most impressive ruined cities on Turkey’s south coast. Its golden age as a center of tolerance, peace, and trade saw it become one of the wealthiest cities in the Classical World, trading with all the great powers of the day. Although its famous neutrality was finally trampled by an act or treachery, the remains of the mighty city still stand, and have been a tourist site since Ottoman times, sporting one the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters and one of the most sophisticated and in-fact sections of Roman aqueduct in the world. Easily reached from Antalya or Alanya, and with several other ruined cities nearby, Aspendos makes a great day trip. Just ask Guy Richie.
