Adéwalé was the voice of reason of the Jackdaw and a competent quartermaster(and temporary captain, so in a way, he did lead the Jackdaw after all), that's why the crew respected him. When Edward constantly fell in an spiral of greed and selfishness, the Jackdaw's crew turned to Adéwalé in a way. They did care about Edward, but seeing that their captain was falling apart, they turned to the next sanest person around, someone more reasonable. Even though they didn't voice it, the crew of the Jackdaw considered Adé as their captain, especially because Edward was putting himself before the crew.

Two details that caught my eye 7:02 Obviously in the era they were in, that is something someone would say, but I love Edward's response. Shows that at the very least, he respects Adé and what he's done. Then at 11:00 Whether it be from Edward standing up for Adéwalé, Thatch not caring about skin color or whatever other reason, Thatch still talks to Adé with respect, even looking him in the eye and calling him sir. Both scenes subtly shows how Hornigold and Thatch treat Edward later on. One becomes his enemy and is out for himself, the other helps and fights beside him to the end.

I'd hardly say Hornigold was out for himself. He just became disillusioned with what Nassau had become. Say what you will about him, but he was right. There was nothing guiding the people there, no ambition except the next time they'd eat or fuck. When that's all your community is about, things tend to fall apart pretty quickly. Hornigold's disillusionment and induction into the Templars stemmed from the fact that their so-called "free society" completely and utterly failed. By the time Rogers came into town offering a pardon, Nassau was little more than a rat-infested, disease-ridden slum that could best be compared to a trailer park. Hornigold was fed up with the aimless living, rampant disease, and a community doing nothing to improve itself.

@@camm3217 The odds were overwhelmingly AGAINST them at the time, & Ade did try to dissuade him from being stupid & getting in league with Barty, but Edward wouldn't listen. had Ade chose to stay, chances are fuckin' off the roof that the entire crew would just get overran by Barty's people. given rescuing their increasingly reckless captain would only mean jeopardizing everyone's wellbeing, either right there or afterwards, i'd say he made a good call dumping Edward. he was, after all, the quartermaster of the Jackdaw & his responsibilities & LOYALTY were FIRST & FOREMOST, to the crew of the Jackdaw. whether he wanna continue being the lackey of a reckless asshole who cared for just about no one but himself at that point, was beside the point. As a crewman of the seas, pirate or otherwise, you're loyal to your captain because through your captain, you're doing right by your ship & more importantly, your crew. if your captain's actions REPEATEDLY go against the will of the crew & jeopardize everyone's wellbeing, you'd be doing right by said ship & crew, to just dump the captain instead. Edward only has himself to blame for Ade deciding to save the crew & cut him loose.

Edward was a terrible captain who let his greed and selfishness get to him but in the end, he turned his life around and changed course. I suppose that is what made him a better person to Adewale, he still considered Edward a good friend.

Ade was a big part of what made Black Flag's story one of the best. He and Mary were one of the few voices of conscience in Edward's life, and because of them he eventually realized he had to change his ways.
