Assassin's Creed Mirage Is EXACTLY What I Feared... | Review

Going back to the roots of Assassin's Creed was a fantastic idea after much of the fanbase was fatigued due to the bloated content found in Odyssey or Valhalla. However, Ubisoft may have gone too close to the roots of the original Assassin's Creed instead of evolving upon it. The ideas are sound, great even, but it all falls apart when these pieces come together.

See one thing that they did away with in assassins creed that I’ve always viscerally felt the absence of is the puzzles and mysterious subject 16 files that you had to “decode” and find through out the world. I miss that kind of stuff. It feels like assassins creed has lacked that sort of mystery for such a long time and it really shows. I don’t necessarily dislike modern Assassin’s creed but it really lack the soul of the old games in a lot of ways.

I remember back with the failed Thief reboot, that during development there was a huge backlash from fans that there was going to be a leveling system and so they ended up removing it because "Garrett is already a master thief", fast-forward to today, every single triple A game has a skill point system, even Doom, it's just a part of the checklist for what to add to a modern big budget game.
@frenchfriedbagel7035
@frenchfriedbagel7035 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, but Dooms is unlocked within a single playthrough and gives you an excuse to replay the game with full upgrades.
@mattallred
@mattallred 9 месяцев назад
Have you ever played a game that starts you off with everything unlocked? I've been playing Castlevania: SOTN lately and it starts you briefly with everything before taking it away. Games have always had progression and sequels have often poked fun at this or theorized why the character is reset. Whether its levelled skills or items/weapons which grant you new abilities, this isn't really anything new. I'm 99% certain that developers understand through millions of hours of playtesting that players get overwhelmed if given all abilities immediately. This is why most games always start you off by instructing you how to move or look around. You can argue about how it should be paced, but NG+ ultimately seeks to solve this by letting you replay the full game with everything. Do you want lots of skills and abilities? Then the trade off is unlocking it over time and hopefully getting NG+. Triple A games are developed for audiences of millions, it's in their interest to make their product accessible. Granting abilities without explaining them isn't accessible. So we get tutorials and unlockable progression. The system itself isn't the problem, it's the implementation. If it affords you gameplay options, totally unique mechanics with trade-offs, then it's fun. If it's simple incremental stat boosts, yeah, that sucks... but if it is giving you new gameplay abilities and allowing you to engage with the game world in a better way, then what's the problem? Would you really be happy to start the game as an unstoppable force? Even in the original DOOM you start with just a pistol. It's a flimsy criticism. It's basic game design and it's up to the devs to make it work... to make it make sense... to make it fun.

I feel like there is an underline problem in gaming industry atm. Some people who are very active on social media and some very active social influencers comes out as face of consumer. Just because they are very active on social media. Such people usually have strong opnions and want shorter games, action oriented, fast paced because they play a lot of games and newd time for social media. Developers are taking such people feedback which I believe is ruining some franchises. Just for example Valhalla is unanimously criticized on social media yet the game is best selling ubisoft game ever. Developer need to understand social media users arent the majority of consumers. Games are played by people of all ages genders in 200 countries. Social media is usually a face of young, busy, western people. When I saw mirage the first time I knew it will be critically praised but wont sell that well. This is also why I feel MrMattyplays is a better face of consumer in the industry. Most of youtubers have to review 10 games a month. There is no way they can be voice of consumers. Most will always say they like shorter games. Because they have to review 10 games or have to make videos have to do things etc etc. That is also why starfield is rated lower than mirage. General consumer like me only buy 20 30 games a generation of 7 years that is 84 months 🤔

Its very strange how the rpg games divided the fanbase so far apart, most of the people who praise odyssey call this game garbage and somehow already miss the rpg mythological style, while ppl like me who dont like odyssey and valhalla as much, believe mirage is how ac should have been for the last few games and needs to stay. I worked a little bit in the game design field a while back, so this is just my thoughts. I think technology is making it easier for artists to create high quality assets quickly. Maybe AI will be the thing that helps the design and coding side be easier. I feel like it's difficult to innovate new gameplay, implement it bug free, test it, and make it fun within the deadlines they set. Feels like gameplay is more of a "let's hope this works and make changes for the next game or go in a totally new direction" which I guess works if your business goal is to pump out a ton of titles COD style.

I loved the pacing in Odyssey. Every few quests you were introduced to another layer. First you get your ship, then you meet your father, then you discover the secret cult, and finally you get to meet mythical creatures. This pacing was lacking in Valhalla. The main story was super heavy and more important than getting rid of the secret cult. I enjoyed Valhalla for it's incredible size and stories in each region. I'm only 5 hours in Mirage and I do notice you only have two options: Whistle guards to assassinate them, or end up in a brawl. I do hope that after finishing Mirage, you'll have a better understanding of Basim and that the next full game will be 60 hours again. Oh, I bought a month of Ubisoft+. I think we are way past the days of what made old AC games great. No hate for people who like the new ones, but they’re a completely different series in my opinion. Early AC games were clearly made by someone with a vision of exploring a philosophical dichotomy throughout the ages. The soul of the series was a debate over security and control vs freedom, carried out by secret societies. Authority and anarchy. Somewhere along the way that soul left the series and we were left with surface level interpretations and imitations, whilst going further away from the core identity in an attempt to reinvent itself. To me the series peaked with the Ezio timeline. That’s where you find the soul of the series.

8:45 - You used an example of Mirage falling down by not having murder mysteries and finding clues. There were multiple missions in Mirage where I had to find clues in homes and locations. I feel like a rival publisher sponsored this video because there is no way you can be this wrong. 11:03 - you said players mess up or get into a fight when trying to be stealthy? No, you're just bad at the game. I managed stealthily without a problem.

I love the AC series. I own every game. This is a $20 or less purchase for me. WIth the backlog that i have, I can wait. They should have did a hybrid. The old classic with the new open world or semi open world gameplay. I liked all 3 AC games after Syndicate.

This game is a full game priced DLC. Good suggestion to wait for a sale. I mean, Ure gonna play it no matter what bc it’s AC. Also, LOVED Odyssey the most bc it was massive. Especially since I had all the expansions! This game took FOREVER to complete. Made me feel like I got a lot of value for the price

Most people only remember the horrible performance, floating eyes and teeth with missing heads and constant crowds related bugs popping in and out (that still can happens with clothes and whole NPCs models changing) or NPCs glitching out. It's why 1st impressions are VERY important because current unity Is STILL the best AC gameplay in the series but only the true AC purest fans can see how goated Unity really is unfortunately. The combat on this mirage, had me playing Valhalla and Odyssey again. Since at least in these games. You can hold yourself against guard. While in mirage, if you got into a fight. You’re highly likely to get killed. So you run and hide, doing stealth assassinations. Adding they don’t let you increase your stamina gauge.

It's interesting how all the dedicated Assassins Creed gamers constantly bash Creed. How it's gone down hill, etc. Meanwhile, I'm playing Assassin's Creed, Odyssey, and as a mere casual gamer and my first AC game, it's one of the most amazing games I've ever played. The rich attention to detail. The relative ease of game play on the PC considering the complexity of the world. Amazing.

@@nextgenjahThat's a relative statement. Maybe OP doesn't care about console exclusives and wanted a 3rd party console. In that regard, the Xbox isn't a trash console. Most casual people don't care about exclusives and only care about 3rd party games, so the console war bs doesn't matter.

While I think your criticism is valid I think we cannot look at this as a standard triple A AC title, past or present. This was done with a much smaller DLC team on a smaller budget. On its own the is a Double A title and the flaws in writing and gameplay should be somewhat expected. I look at this as a way to inexpensively test if audiences love the Old School AC feel or they need to stick with the EPIC action adventure world changing event stories. If it sells well I think we get another, more fleshed out, more solid AC game next. I will be picking this one up.
