I feel like this will be the most underrated game of the year. The amount of detail they’ve put into this game is beyond amazing. It never feels empty or lifeless, not even the vast miles of dessert. They added some neat mirage effects.

I've wanted an AC set in Egypt for a long time and wow I can't believe how good this is. I've put 15h and I can say already this is my favorite AC game to date and one of my favorite games in general. It's amazing how they recreate that era, combat is addicting, stealth feels so good, the BOW feels amazing, climbing feels natural (at last), the rpg elements are great, the animals are so real and terrifiying, SENU is amazing, one of the bests things the game has. Overall I recommend this game, is a must.

Replayed this game this past year. I think it's the best of the new RPG trilogy by a pretty wide margin. The pacing, story, visuals, setting, and main character are all the best. It's odd looking back that Huber gave Odyssey a 9/10 and Origins a 7/10 when they are pretty much the same game in terms of gameplay, combat, mission structure, etc. Maybe he just likes Ancient Greece better lol

Most important question: Can we play card games with the pharaoh?

I just fell in love with Egypt right after playing the game for about 2 hours and felt like, I wanna visit Siwa and Alexandria soon.

AC is my reliable go to "wait for the gold edition to be 30 bucks" game, probably gonna stick to that plan, thanks for the review

The closing statement is kinda crazy, "Don't expect much change" when Ubisoft has been promoting the game by showing new "revamped" combat gameplay in this game. Which means a franchise like this has truly went past its prime and now is only being milked until people (or the publisher) wants it to be dead like Mass Effect (R.I.P)

Wow, that’s quite early!

I love it, the map is gigantic and fun to explore, the level of and attention to detail is really amazing, the world feels alive, the clouds are super realistic, the mounts are kinda cute and it feels satisfying to ride them, it is just pure open world single player goodness to lost yourself in for hours, if you are into that of course, which I'm surely am :)

The Egyptian setting looks beautiful and well crafted. However, the gameplay looks so stiff and dull. I wish they took the time to smooth them out and make it more fluid.

Not a fan of so many games having numbers pop up when you do damage to any enemy. I assume it's quite useful info, but I can't imagine the art team was in favour of that. Isn't the health bar enough feedback for the player?

I played far cry 4, ghost recon wildlands and now this. All games are graphically beautiful and that is it. Same old formula doing same things, also stories in these games are not interesting. Like someone said, big beautiful game but without soul.

Thanks for the scoop, Huber. As someone who doesn't like assassin's creed but was interested because of all the 'changes' its good to know that it's still not much different. I'll be avoiding it.

The fact this game is an rpg is an insult to the og ACs. UBI, you should have never fired the original authors. Every AC since has feeled soulless.

Looks great. I'm a fan of the series so this is a definite for me and tbh I'm just happy they kept the microtranactions quite similar to Syndicate. If they made them more intrusive I wouldn't be able to justify the purchase. I was able to ignore Syndicates and therefore probably will be able to ignore these very easily.

Let's be frank: Assassin's Creed 1 wasn't much more than a rough draft, only the second one actually set down the "blueprint" for the rest of the series. Sadly, not much seems to have changed since then and the main issues from back then (i.e. bland and repetitive side missions with barely any connection to anything in the game's "world") still plague the series.

Man, I was into right up until “if you love the franchise origins is an easy recommendation... Just, don’t expect much change.” That line changed it from a buy to MAYBE a rent.

It's bizarre how many changes they keep making yet even after an extra year, they still can't make a well-polished game... I'm very keen on the RPG elements and I think it's the only interesting looking game since Black Flag, but considering how many games we're into this franchise, the fact they still feel so disorganised is unforgivable at this point.

Last one I played was AC 2: Brotherhood. As good as this looks, 3 games was enough to know that it would be the same list of mindless tasks. It's fine if you want something to unwind with, but I don't have the time for that anymore.

Anyone know if we're getting a review of Odyssey soon or did these guys not get a review copy because of the leak fiasco?

Assassin’s Creed Origins (I’d put the story of Origins over Black Flag and AC2 due to it being so different/dark. However gameplay is more MMORPG inspired and less of the franchise itself. Only reasons I put it at number 3!)

I want a Samurai AC and a Future AC.

By the way, microtransactions are entirely optional and should not be held against the game. "Time Savers" are just that; time savers. I had a terminally ill friend whose favorite series was Assassin's Creed, and Time Saver microtransactions allowed him to get the most out of Black Flag before he passed. If you want to enjoy the game within you own time, play at your own pace and you'll be just fine. But if you are the type of gamer where money isn't an issue and want to speedrun, or just want to SAVE TIME (which becomes increasingly short as you grow older) etc, by all means. Ubi shouldn't be hounded for their decision to implement these. People freak the fuck out way too often over their implementation when you can ignore them entirely.

"Just don't expect much change"... I don't think any fan of Assassin's Creed is expecting or wanting much change. It looks like just the right amount of new stuff while staying familiar and true to the franchise.

Edit: I spoke too harshly. I let my anger at what they did to the combat/stealth system (and every choice that knocked on from that) get to me. I'm sorry for that. Otherwise, it's a decent-very good game. It just took me leveling up to 20+ to be able to really enjoy it, because so much of the progression is held back behind a heavy grind (to push mtx). The story is decent so far, the environment is awesome, and breasts are beautiful, so I'm glad they're not hiding that anymore in AC, other than Aya's love scenes, which is odd. The racing is great. The animals are great. Being able to tame the animals and watch them in action is great. And that's where the positives outweigh my lamentation over the loss of my favorite action/stealth gameplay in the industry. It's not what it could have been, but it's still a good game overall.

My review on Assassin's Creed Origins is this. First off it lacked a good storyline. I feel that part of the best mechanism of the Assassin's Creed franchise, is the emotional content that connects you to the story ark, & the character you're playing. I feel that Bayek didn't have any strong supporting background characters, Whether it was opposite character, or another strong leading character such as his wife Aya. I felt as though the trip to Egypt was a waste. Not because of the setting but because of the fact they could've tied a lot of things up with this story. Such as the iso & man split, the Templar order & the forming of the Egyptian Brotherhood of Assassin's. I really was looking for Ubisoft to give us a story like Horizon Zero Dawn. Which by the way had a really good dynamic range to it. I felt as though because this game is such a popular title the developer's should've polished this tittle like it was going to be the last. As far as game play, graphics design, & new features such as Senu. I thought the did very well on. Anyway those are just some of the short comings I saw as a player from a player prospective. I thought the tittle was a big let down.

Time Savers I’m okay with because you don’t have to buy those and only helps those without the time to spend exploring the game. I’m not okay with in-game content that are “DLC” on day 1.

you guys' reviews are still the best but i'm shocked you gave it a 3.5*, sounded more like a 4*. Anyways i'll be picking this up when I get a current gen console as i'm a huge AC fan (although admittedly I skipped Unity and Syndicate)

i love how spokesman for the game swore you could not buy those lootboxes with real money, only with ingame money...but failed to mention that tiny detail that you can trade the purchasable items for ingame money. Such sneaky pieces of crap they are. Anyone else just see most big budget games just getting worse and worse over the next few years? I just can't see people like EA and Activision stopping or not trying out even more shady sh*t in the future.

Well it is a sequel and it honestly shouldn't change everything or it will end up risking itself turning into something it isn't and will alienate the long time fans of the franchise. As long as the narrative is good and the story is once again focused up then you have mine and the rest of the fanbase attention. Bring back the excellent writing we've seen in AC1,3,4 and Rogue. That's were all of the spotlight was at and really need to see Ubisoft at they're best again.

I'm curious: it seems the combat has been revamped, though I'm not sure to what degree but everyone says its harder. But reviewers call it more of the same. Why is that? Same concepts just slightly different mechanics or something else?

In a different reality where this game is a new IP from Nintendo: "10/10, one of the best games ever!!1!" I'm having more fun with this game than I did with BotW.

Good review but I have a problem with the star system. How does 3.5 stars equate to decent? Decent to me is 'ok' or 'average'. And a 7/10 should really be called good or something along those like. If 7 on the scale is decent does that mean 5 is bad? Your scale seem way too weighted at one end. I've always hated this about reviews. A 5 should be average. Not a 7.

I feel like as the origins of assassin creed the story and stealth should have been better and the new combat system should have been polished more,I feel like they were so focused on making a beautiful open world that they didn’t give enough attention to the game mechanics and they rushed the story but overall the game is still good and very addicting they didn’t really capture the feeling of being an assassin in a rpg

Great review Huber. I'll probably do what I've done with every AC game since 3 - either buy it pre owned when it's cheap or borrow it from a friend. I refuse to support this franchise unless the story gets itself together, but this doesn't necessarily seem to do that.

I disagree with most of the review. After playing for more that 50 hours I think it is the best AC so far. I enjoyed the main story and the sidequests were a huge step up from the previous only-4-kinds-of-sidequest model. Now every quest has it's own story and dialog and there are a few chained quests that allow you to follow on some secondary characters. I like this game more than Horizon (and I really enjoyed Horizon). The world is very big and diverse, you get a surprising amount of variety for a game you'd expect to be pretty much 100% desert. The combat is not great, I'd say it is about as generic as the witcher's, but it is still a big improvement compared to any previous AC. Highly recommended for AC fans, as the review said. Personal score: 8.5

Is there a micro transaction purchase I can make so it plays the game for me?

Time savers aren't really something new. Battlefield has had them since Battlefield 3. Skate 2 had that Time is Money DLC that unlocked everything in the game for $5. I didn't find them intrusive then, I won't find them intrusive now. I understand Huber's viewpoint when it comes to Multiplayer games revolving around loot. Your cool sword becomes a lot less valuable when you see a guy who bought it for 2 dollars queueing for a dungeon with you. I don't understand it when it comes to a single player game based around exploration. Why does it affect your perception of your gameplay experience because some other person decided to save some time and buy the locations? It doesn't affect you at all. If the only reason that gameplay was good was because of your accomplishment, and if that value in the gameplay can be so easily taken away by the fact that someone else can pay to skip it in their own game, was the gameplay even that good in the first place?

And what of the modern day storyline? My decision to buy depends largely on if Ubisoft does anything substantial with the modern day frame story.

When I heard the rumors that the next AC was gonna be in Ancient Egypt, I was excited. After seeing the debut at E3...I wasn't excited. Something about it just didn't sit well with me. After hearing this review, however, I'm thinking I'll get this. BTW, for those bemoaning the "timesaver" microtransactions, in case you don't remember, we've had those since AC4 at least, maybe even AC3, so they're nothing new.

Snagging this and Mario tomorrow, going to be a good day!

Is the pre order mission worth it?

Guh, I feel bad for AC... It's a great idea for a franchise, but Ubisoft hasn't been treating it with enough respect :( It's got the potential to be something truly iconic, like Mario or Zelda, but instead of giving the games time to mature (core Mario and Zelda titles come out every ~4 years) they try to churn it out ;_; And it sounds like Ubisoft isn't going to be getting enough incentive to make quality rather than quantity for it from Origins, so... RIP quality from Altair's and Ezio's early days...

Also when will eve or Eden show up again lol it’s so many unexplained things in the series when Desmond was alive everything was so mysterious like the truth video. I wouldn’t mind a modern day story honestly only it would move forward with Juno and the pieces of Eden and Desmond’s son as a enemy turned ally after he meets his father in the animus explaining to his son what he fought for and adding the descendent of eve is the key and find her and Desmond son and the defendant of eve fight together to stop Juno with assassins resistance against her and maybe some mind controlled salves she’s held captive and I miss when the holograms of Juno Jupiter and Minerva showed up

I dunno. I'm excited for more AC, but the RPG elements bum me out. I thought Black Flag had the perfect balance of traditional AC gameplay and light RPG elements, but Origins seems like it's going almost full RPG. Maybe it's because I just finished Nier Automata, but I'm just not feeling for Origins at the moment.

I just can’t get over how combat is the crustiest it’s ever been in the entire series. If you’re gonna take away the chain kills (which I wasn’t opposed to), at least make it fluid Ubi.

Personally I love this game. It has lots of elements from great open world games like, zelda, dark souls and the witcher mixed together well to make a really enjoyable game. Easily 4.5 stars for me.
