Assassin's Creed: Valhalla - Ancient Roman Post-Apocalyptic Game?

Today we're gonna talk about something that reviewers and general audience don't address enough - or at all. Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is a game in a post-apocalyptic setting. Yeah, like Fallout or Metro 2033.
Ubisoft never concisely envisioned Valhalla as something of a medieval version of Fallout. But it turned out like that and inadvertently it conveys a very powerful message on the Ancient history and what the so-called "Fall of the Roman Empire" really was.
Although Valhalla has certain problems not only with the historical accuracy, but also with common sense, it is a visual masterpiece of a post-Roman decay, an illustration of how European civilization took a wrong turn - and where it ended up. Europe after the fall of the Classical Antiquity looks like it survived a nuclear war.

Each of the three most recent AC games puts a strong emphasis on 'the empire before' - whether the abandoned pyramids in origins, the old mycenean settlements in odyssey, or the roman ruins in valhalla. I agree with you though that valhalla is the only one that truly feels post-apocalyptic. I think this made me dislike its towns in part, as there was practically no room for non-ruins in Lunden (for example) so it hurt immersion because there was simply nowhere that it would make sense for the population to live. This might be what made the Ireland expansion so nice - there aren't any ruins so Dublin actually feels like a town

That’s true, due to the nature of AC and a variety of historical periods covered, the developers inevitably have to put “the ruins of previous civilizations” here and there. It is indeed more pronounced in the last three AC games, although it is something that’s always been present in the series (Ezio’s games and the ruins of Rome + structures in Asia Minor, ruins in Black Flag, etc). But it never really felt post-apocalyptic. And Valhalla all of a sudden is basically “a medieval Fallout”. Which is precisely why I feel it is a great illustration of something that really happened in human history. People usually don’t think much about what this “Fall of a Roman Empire” was and perceive it as “the Empire collapsed, welcome Dark Ages”. But the magnitude of the event (or the series of events) is comparable to a full-scale nuclear war. And it is very colorful and quite visceral in AC: Valhalla.

Same here. I have been wanting a real and full setting in Ancient Rome, ever since Odyssey

Very nice idea to notice this, I started playing Valhalla and as history lover can agree that you get this post apolitical atmosphere

When Valhalla came out, I had 0 interest in it. It felt like just another piece of fiction riding on the viking trend. But seeing the beautiful depictions of the dark ages in post roman britain really made me intrigued to play it.

I love your historical knowledge. I noticed a lot of inconsistencies as well. I just want an Ancient Rome AC.. but they just blueball you in Valhalla.

This was really inciteful! Not sure if you were asking for real or not but the pope living in an old tomb seems normal considering Catholicism is a religion based on the understanding of human mortality and the need to live a moral life. Reminders of death is a traditional roman catholic trait.

Thanks for a good video. To be honest with you, i play ac games primarily for the historical value and i must say you're completely right, i got the same feeling. Small dialogues here and there along the lines of "London, the city built by giants" gives this sour taste in your mouth as in yes it was, but not those kind of giants. Pain.

The high point of this current gen of AC games was Origins for me. I still remember the first time I found Alexandria, The Aqueduct (That you thought was in ruins, but was actually being built), and the Roman Port City (Forget the name) with a Colosseum in it. Loved so much about the setting, main character, and feel of that game. While I also loved the setting of Odyssey, for me the gameplay became a slog of doing the same thing over and over, and I just never connected with the story or main character, which is why I never even bothered picking up Valhalla, the first AC game I've never played. I don't doubt for a second that the graphics are probably stunning, but I was just so ultimately put off by the experience of Odyssey, that I've abandoned the series as a whole by this point. Loved this vid though.

I finished all the AC games - except for handheld/mobile/platformer spin-offs (although I also finished the XBLA version of Liberation). And my favorites are probably Odyssey (obviously) and Black Flag. I always felt like Odyssey was an upgrade of Origins' gameplay. Although all of the AC games have certain gameplay and - especially - combat system problems. To some extent. I always keep reminding myself that the AC franchise started off with the combat system of "just hold block and parry - you can kill 1 billion opponents this way". Literally everything is an upgrade after that. Valhalla is quite good and it is reasonably different from Odyssey. I enjoyed it quite a bit (but never played the DLCs).

I've been playing Assassin's Creed since AC III (and i've played all the games which are available on console/pc) and my favorite by far is Origins. I just love the setting, the lore, the history and by far the characters. The cities are also beautiful and so is the countryside. While its not a conventional Assassins Creed game, it is still my favorite.

Interesting idea. But look into the Vikings thats is where Valhalla get is ideas from. It is a bit different from the heights of Egypt and Rome.
