Assault Vest: Good and Bad Users 

Assault Vest Kartana is mostly a Gen 7 VGC thing, where AV sees use on Kartana for much of the same reasons that AV is good on Alolan Muk; it matches up well against the most prominent special attackers of the format, like the Tapus and Swift Swim attackers.

My personal favorites are Mudsdale and Bellibolt, since Mudsdale can begin tanking moves it is normally weak to, while Bellibolt can easily tank special attacks, get charge from Electromorphosis, and then use Parabolic Charge to heal up.

This is a great explanation I've always been unsure when to use vest.

My favourite combination is AV+priority move. So you have bulk, but you can also be a revenge killer in emergency situations

I like to use protect on my AV ttar to stall for more sand damage. Also don’t forget slack off on glowking otherwise you don’t have recovery!

I happen to give Kleavor an Assault Vest just to live special attacking moves so it can stone axe to set up stealth rock. I also use Alolan Raticate with Hustle and it’s actually clutch.

Probably one of my favorite items. I love just having something that can take numerous hits and fire off strong attacks. I’ve been recently using a Slither Wing with assault vest to take strong hits and fire off priority first impression or have a slow powerful u-turn

I like using AV Tsareena for the added bulk. I used to use Protective Pads before Heavy Duty Boots were added, and then I used HDB, but I used AV in a multi battle once and it performed really well. I also phased out Aromatherapy on ot because it rarely got used

In the RU tier of gen 9, I have a lot of fun using Assault Vest of Perrserker. With full hp investment, he can survive a lot of choice boosted special attacks and has decent physical defense to tank neutral hits. With the tough claws ability and max attack, he can pick out a number of KO's on the physically frailer special pokemon like espeon with u-turn, and can check steel weak mons.

I always loved using Assault Vest Corsola in Gen 8 PU with Charizard running the tier and to even abuse the common usage of Whimsicott with its Specs or Offensive sets which allowed it to survive an Energy Ball from 80% +/- to then counter-attack with Mirror Coat. You would be able to then gain hp back by switching out, and I personally used wish cleric support with it

The best AV user are bulky and decently strong Pokemon. Often their speed is bad but they can switch in very often and can just start clicking moves. Azumarill, Eelektross, Alolan Muk, Hariyama, Galarian Slowking, Tapu Bulu, Kingambit, Goodra, Scizor, Slither Wing, Tsareena, Tyranitar and the list goes on. In VGC it's also great for support Pokemon like Scrafty, who is a better Assault Vest user than Incineroar because it's special defense much higher and thus it able to only get 3hko by Calyrex Shadow Draining Kiss. Kartana, Hydreigon, Goodra and Groudon are also great AV user in VGC

I used assault vest on my Bombirdier, it has a surprisingly decent special defense plus it could actually tank many hits with a rock teratype while still having offensive coverage and the rock stab ability.

I run AV Diggersby, with Gunkshot it'll take any Tapu Fini. Slap one on Goodra and it's like you maxed out HP, SP. ATK, and SP. DEF. instead of having to choose two. Then Swiss-army knife the thing.

also kartana really doesnt like to be choice locked but it also kinda wants the choice items.

AV Amoonguss is a legitmate set in SM, it runs stomping > spore to make it less abusable by Heatran. 2 of the terrains make sleep impossible so its sometimes a worth while trade off

Been using AV Clawitzer a bit in NU, it works really well for my team, as does AV Crabominable, it helps them tank hits they'd otherwise not be able to, so AV works pretty well for them.

AV Tar back in gen 7 kept the tier together. Getting rid of pursuit made the ghosts/physic types of the word so much stronger

I mostly use assault vest on goodra. Sometimes on gardevoir and Magnezone

In my Opinion, the best best user is iron hands, it fixes his one big problem, being his lack of special bulk, and his access to drain punch lets him recover health even with it on

In VGC, AV also works really well with Intimidate Pokemon, especially Paldean Tauros. It makes them much more tankier againts both physical and special. AV is also good with Pokemon that's not very fast but can hit very hard, AV Garchomp and Dragonite performed really well in VGC tournament.

This remind me of the great gen 7 era in which i used to run the common sp def heatran set but make it hold an assault vest, unable to throw rocks but able to outspeed and ohko impish lando with hp ice

Currently using Iron Hands as my take big hit and give big hits AV user. With some sp. def investment, maxx attack, and some speed. Its a powerhouse! 👍

2:30 are you talking about natdex? because muk wasn't in gen 8. also, it learns drain punch, so it fits into the same category as bulu.

I like using assault vest Slither Wing (I use a pivot set but I don't think thats affect anything) since is a bug type that needs sun and now it can survive a flamethrower, some people think that is better with a bulk up set but u-turn and goodbye physical attacker!

I know you mentioned NFE pokemon being bad candidates for Assault Vest, but does it see any use in Little Cup where you can only give Eviolite to one party member? Especially considering how bulk isn’t nearly as important in LC as it is in standard play/VGC

2:27 but Alolan Muk is immune to psyquic attacks so it doesn't make sense to say that it resists psyquic attacks.

I use assault vest in only one pokemon and it is Rypherior with sandstorm i only used assault vest on him because didnt know what else to put on him

yea you're right the best assault vest users are like bulky-ish tank attackers that do not have or need any reliable healing status moves i remember assault vest tangrowth or even something as fringe as assault vest drain punch hitmonchan in earlier gens

Would Kingambit be good candidate for AV? With it's naturally high HP and defense, investing a bit on the Special defense with the assault vest boost would make it really specially bulky and it has a great matchup with all the ghost running around the tier except for Annihilape. I was surprised it being able to tank either Armarouge armour cannon or Aura sphere

it may sound like a dumb combo, but maybe many uses it, but I honestly quite love using an assault vest on glimmora. max out that special defense with it, and minus the deadly ol earth powers, you'll shrug off a lot of hits and almost force people to slap them with a physical attack, to trigger that toxic debris. for come on, who's gonna wanna deal with that nearly 400 special defense there?

AV Magnezone is awesome on Sand teams w/Mirror Coat & Explosion also any Regenerator mon, i like Mienshao but i usually Life Orb that bih

As far I know, it is 50% boost, not a +1 boost. Which in a vacuum might be so, but if you get your special defense modified in any way, like, metal sound or something, is calculated differently

What about Goodra or Florges? Do they fit into the Ttar category?

This is a perfect and quick way to explain the topic, although I'm curious what are the thoughts about Goodra While Goodra isn't the best user for it, lacking recovery or specifically good matchups, I can't pass that Goodra inclusion during the debut of this item were likely meant to go together

Amoonguss with AV is great, it's not dictated by spore or not. It's regen with great utility moves like foul play and clear smog can replace spore

I have a garchomp i assault vest but only coz i pass boosts onto it using baton pass

I use it on metagross with earthquake psyhield bash meteor mash and body press mine can tank earthquake so uh yea and it can outspeed some mons somehow

Iron Hands Assault Vest is so good. It’s HP + Defense is already really good, so giving it Assault Vest to make its Sp. Defense as good as it’s defense is a blessing. Not only that, but it gets STAB Drain Punch for recovery and resistance Flying type moves and Knock Off. Severely underrated Mon.

Good video, but assault vest amoongus was prob the best set in gen 6 and 7 cus it can live a hit from heatran and ohko it with stomping tantrum, I predict it to have a comeback once home comes out bc it also ruins gholdengo

AV is rather niche for Kartana, and I generally wouldn’t recommend it for ladder. I think it’s better served by Scarf, Band, or a Swords Dance set. AV on Kartana can make for an interesting anti-rain tech, since you can live Rain-boosted Hydro Pump with Sp Def investment. Albeit, Kartana still loses the 1v1 since it can’t kill back and it gets outsped in the Rain.

I've used Assault Vest Blissy it was max hp/max special attack and the goal was to wall special pokemon and slowly whittle them down using Serene Grace to keep them paralyzed with Thunder and Confused with Water Pulse I also had Charge Beam to raise Blissy's damage and Shadowball to weaken their defense

Im currently experimenting on showdown with the NU tier, and on my team i have assault vest Medicham. Dont really have a reason to say this, but Medichams pretty fun on this team

In a nutshell, if you can learn Recover or one of its snowclones it's bad, otherwise go nuts
