The Oricorio Invasion of Competitive Pokémon's Lower Tiers

I had no idea Oricorio’s signature move changed type with Terastalizarion. This was quite a REVELATION for me.

I do love that a Single move took this dance troop from near irrelevance to actually useful above PU

I always loved oricorio’s designs and gimmick so seeing it be actually good in a competitive tier for once is very cool

What this video and competitive Pokemon has taught me is this: Quiver Dance is a helluava drug. Imagine a world where Volcarona debuted with no Quiver Dance.

The big reason they were all in the lower tiers was because the forms competed with each other. Electric and Ghost were both usable in RU, while Psychic and Fire were both in NU. Since only 1 Oricorio can be used, that means the 2 usable ones, combined, would have enough usage, they split usage among each other, thus falling to tiers they are horrifically overpowered for.

I like how this RU and UU mons can make an interesting lower-tier metagame. It makes the game fun when you´re tired of seeing Chomp and Lando for the 741234 time.

I just realized that this will make Zapdos insane In the Convergence format. Imagine Zapdos with Revelation Dance and Quiver Dance, alongside Kilowattrel's Competitive.

I always thought it was weird oricorio didn’t get quiver dance in Gen 7, was disappointed when I found that out, but now it’s really fun!

I remember when Orocorio and its Revelation Dance was first revealed. It was neat. And then it hadn't crossed my mind since. Revelation Dance acting like Terra Blast makes sens code vise, yet it is eye opening.

It’s worth mentioning that part of the reason oricorio was so centralizing in PU was because aside from Delibird, it was the only hazard removal option who could safely run HDB, since all other Pokémon with rapid spin or defog were NFEs who more or less needed to run eviolite

Oricorio was honestly a really fun mon in NU, it’s good that I got banned but I do miss it sometimes

this may surprise some people, but Oricorio Pom-Pom is about just as viable in UU as in RU. this is because UU is a tier where Tera-Ice Sandy Shocks is unironically the best ice type in the tier, and it overall has good matchups against top threats, especially the "big three" of Talonflame, Sandy Shocks, and Tinkaton, and in particular it runs Taunt to beat encore Tinkaton and get a free setup opportunity off it

Hilariously I used to use oricorio (electric) in gen 7 ou. It was never great but it was a mediocre anti-meta option. Revelation dance clapped tornadus peliper greninja and gyrados, icy wind would hilariously destroy Lando and gliscor, hp fire would beat scizor Kartana and hit ferrothorn hard. And as icing on the cake, hurricane destroyed serperior volcarona keldeo and medicham. I’m sure I forgot some other stuff but it was surprisingly usable.

I’ll never forget the one time I switched my Mirror Herb Oricorio in on my opponent’s Volcarona. Not only they gave me two free Quiver Dances, they choked and tried to Quiver Dance boost again in the same turn I used a Quiver Dance. That’s 4 QD’s in 2 turns. 😂

If I had known that Oricorio got Quiver Dance and its Revelation Dance pretty much acts like a Tera Blast, I would have used it a lot sooner.

Happy about this because it's a nice buff for a well designed Pokemon that's also cute. Just a nice lil buff to help them out.

Oricorio is one of my favourite Pokemon, so I'm glad to see it doing stuff. I just want National Dex Doubles so that I can play it with all the best dancers.

When the psychic form was legal in PU i used it with terra fairy, to switch into gabite, bait a dragon rout with terra fairy, and quiver dance/ defog

Oricorio Yellow is a decent threat in RU but its heavily overshadowed by Toxtricity in pretty much every way. Its also held back by the fact that Hail teams arent uncommon. Never seen ghost form.

The moment I saw that Oricorio got Quiver Dance around release time, I knew it was their time to redeem themselves from their lackluster debut generation, and I sure am happy to see that I wasn't wrong. And there's still more of this metagame to develop! I'll admit this is a little on the dreamier side of things, but imagine switching in to snatch a QD boost in front of Volc, blasting it with Hurricane, seeing an enemy Koko attempt to revenge kill only to get its TBolt no-sold by Tera Ground as you put down another QD and proceed to wreck its face with a now SE Revelation Dance. I would cry laughing.

Just goes to show that you really gotta test out everything when something big drops. I can’t wait to see if the DLC introduces any new moves or items that can turn other underpowered mons into certifiable threats

My favourite part was when Oricorio said "its revelation time" and started revelating all over the posce

I’ve used oricorio Pom and sensu (electric and ghost) a lot in uu and I really think they are underrated. I think they are good enough to be uu by usage, they just aren’t as popular as they should be (and different forms split the usage stats; I think that’s part of why they made it that far down in the first place). Pom is an A rank if I’m not mistaken. It has tougher competition in uu stat-wise, but it also has better support. Better hazard removal (not great but better) and light clay is legal in uu. Oricorio is one of the best screens abusers in the tier and the bulkier spreads are especially good (they also resist and live all of the first impressions and can eat a sucker punch from lokix too if you Tera on sensu).

One really insightful observation I’ve seen made by someone was that oricorio’s usage stats were split among 4 different forms, so each form was tiered lower than would be appropriate for a standard Pokémon with oricorio’s movesets and stats (and ability and typing). Like if there was only one oricorio to use, it’s usage stats would be similar to the sum of the current four forms. So that’s how we ended up with multiple decent quiver dance users in NU.

ngl with access to defog and quiver dance I had oricorio on every PU team before it was banned. It was the only fully evolved PU mon with hazard removal aside form delibird.

Meanwhile oricorio in doubles: *Dances 24/7 on everything*

Cool, dancer is a really cool ability so it's cool that's it's getting more use.

Unfortunately, due to the closing of the E shop, Fire emblem: Revelations is no longer buyable, meaning that Revelation Dance will no longer be legal after the Next DLC

very early on in gen 9 i used an oricorio + volcarona team in doubles and it actually worked really well. dancer is genuinely ridiculous, it's only balanced by oricorio being weak and quiver dance being low distribution, but if you can make it work then oricorio can copy both quiver and fiery dance from volc which is insane. it's a shame we have species clause in doubles, if you had double oricorio you could casually use 4 moves per turn lmao

I remember using a set in Nu to counter oricorio: mirror herb venomoth. If they both switch in, then you quiver dance in front of the bird, and get geomancy. It didn’t work, but it was funny, since I would outsmart my opponent’s outsmarting, only to be reoutsmarted since all my moves still only 2-3 hit ko a boosted oricorio. I know it was covered in the video. Also I didn’t use oricorio because I had sqwakabilly and there was type overlap. It sounds like its objectively worse, and you’re right, but it’s way funnier.

I use oricorio in ou doubles and not gonna lie it feels much stronger in there cuz of quiver dance volcarona (and fiery dance) and friend guard vivilion (with sleep powder) and quaqavel aqua step (which is a more niche attack cuz oricorio is more of a sp. Attacker) Edit: I forgot to mention vivilion has quiver dance as well to set up twice in one turn

Oricorio is so good this gen that it actually got banned in one metagame alongside Chi-Yu, Flutter Mane, Koraidon, and Miraidon. The metagame is called Partners in Crime.

The first time i heard about this mechanic with Oricorio signature move was when WeedleTwinNeedle used it as a Gimmick strat in one of her videos and it was wild Basicly Oricorio when combined with another Oricorio one can just Quiver dance and the other can use Revelation dance this makes them move 2 times on the same turn its cranzy

As a non-competative guy, I'm not sure if zu or lower have been implemented in any gen past the first. But I wonder if oricorio without quiver dance and the universal game gimics would have been in the lowest of the low. Of course, flying electric/fire mons will always have a niche in the fact that they have great offense with little to really stop it from doing what it wants (especially when they usually get most of their bst into speed.) But when a Pokémons bst is similar to that of Crabomitable, you'd think even those good typings would be outmatched.

Oricorio is a necessary slot on Mono Electric teams unfortunately. Wanted to use Mono Electric with a focus on Iron Hands and Revival Blessing Pawmot, but had to slot Oricorio for Defog since it is the only Electric mon that knows it, and no electric mons know Rapid Spin.

On one of my joke teams, it's a blast to switch in on a D dancer when I'm scarfed or an overconfident volcarona. Dancer is such a great ability when you predict it right 😍💚

So happy they finally gave dancer Pokemon quiver dance. Oricorio sensu my favourite. I won a OU match with oricorio sensu fairy Tera type to beat hydreigon, arcanine.

Would it be better or worse if Revelation Dance didn't change type with Tera? Quiver Dance + Revelation Dance + Tera Blast + Hurricane would give a very flexible amount of coverage with guaranteed STAB.

The initial type of Fire Flying was bad in gen 7 and lower. Every Oricorio almost always uses Heavy Duty Boots, so it barely mattered. And Fire Flying is surprisingly good defensively and arguably just as good as offensively as Ghost Flying. The reason it was in PU in the first place is because the other forms outclassed it mostly and now starts to be insanely broken in NU, which probably gets Quickbanned later on.

With these guys you can now spam qd in almost every tier.

I wish dancer worked in Tera raids. I bred 4 perfect oriocorios for my friends. 4 feather dance, 4 quiver dance, taunt, and revelation dances in one turn. there's probably nothing in the game that could take 16 revelation dances in one turn either 😅

The only problem i have with electric oricorio is that it still has an ice weakness wih tera ground, but ice is quite a frail type anyway so r-dance or hurricane can easily knock out the most bulky ice types in nu

Fun Fact, Charizard dropped to NU and Fire Oricorio is on a harsh rise in the tier. Given it's access to utility moves and Quiver Dance means Charizard is doomed and it's only niche there is Choice Specs.

I used it in OU Doubles in gen 7 with a Volcorona using QD cause it’s dancer ability would copy it and it would also copy Fiery dance

It is so bizarre that revelation dance is tied to the Pokémon‘s type and not its form. Like why does it work differently than aura wheel? Signature moves are a complex group
