Davin gets to work reassembling the Mopar A-833 transmission for our 1937 Ford Coupe race car. Eventually, this transmission will mate to the Chrysler 440 V-8 engine that we're rebuilding for the project.

New Mopar actually has a colour "Destroyer Grey." Seen it on a Durango once, and I gotta say, it looks amazing. That would be a nice choice of paint for the transmission.

I remember back in the olden days doing a clutch on my cousins 69 Road Runner! My cousin didn't know s___ about anything about cars so it was me!! On our backs with no jack this was the heaviest damn thing I ever did on a car!!! Didn't have a pilot shaft tool to align the clutch. That was fun! Said to myself never again. Later on I became a mechanic for 40 years & always had a rack & a tranny jack. Back then I was young & dumb! Also having the right tools is a must!

WOW! You took me down memory lane! I did the exact same thing. It was stupid of me to use my back like that! I’m amazed that I didn’t suffer for it for years! I didn’t have money for a transmission jack in those days. The things we did. I’m glad to know someone else did those things as well. Yes, that was one Hell of a tuff transmission but what a monster. Thanks again for the memories.🤣🤣🤣

I suggest you educate yourself in Chrysler A-833 transmissions. Maybe buy yourself the book written by Jamie Passon on the A-833. On page 47, it states: "Use an arbor to tap the countershaft to the rear of the case. This is VERY important. If it were tapped forward, the shaft will ruin the bore that it seats in. This is a special tapered press-fit (doesn't take a hydraulic press either) and it only take one time to ruin it." It is a very well written book BTW. Have a nice day. Best Regards - Mike

Yeah, they did indeed have an A833 in an aluminum housing, most often found behind the /6. It was the housing of choice for the 4 speed/OD because they weren't particularly durable housings. My most recent find had a VIN stamp on it stating it was from a 1964 Dodge and long ago in a different era I pulled one out of a '75 Scamp so they were around for a while. Further on the A833 4 speed/OD mentioned elsewhere in this thread: While 4th gear retained the 1:1 ratio 3rd gear was changed to 1: 0.87 (one revolution of the motor was .87 revolutions at the tire). This worked by flipping the shift lever on the housing for 3/4 meaning when you went through the gears you went from 1st to 2nd to 4th to 3rd, still in the standard H pattern. With the lever reversed the shifter worked those gears backwards without changing the pattern. I'll be bolting one of those up in my '72 Duster 340 because my daily commute is about 25 minutes on I90 and here in Montana the speed limit is 80 out there. And I can use all the help I can get with the fuel consumption. (edit) And this one is cast iron, not aluminum.

Use the correct diameter wooden dowel when assembling the needle bearings in the countershaft THEN leave it in the freezer for awhile, your assemble grease will harden and it will be easier to slide the steel shaft thru the case pushing the wood dowel out and no needle bearings will be disturbed. Also, make sure you check end float after it is installed. Great video! Thank you.

I heard many time before that you don't want to sandblast an engine because of the inevitable sand and dust residues. Then, why do it on the trans and ONLY clean it with air when he has a brand new parts washer !? I don't get it ! Done off camera ? Otherwise, Davin is a hell of a REAL mechanic. The best I ever seen, actually. 👍

I have cut an old broom stick for a shortened dummy shaft. Another method is to place the cluster gear with loaded bearings in the case and let it drop down until you place the main shaft in. Try installing the front input shaft with greased bearings onto the main shaft and secure it with the input shaft retainer. Then lift the cluster gear into place and slide the shaft in making sure you push against the dummy shaft and keep the needle bearings tight and in place. This method allows more wiggle room and alignment afterwards when you lift the cluster gear in place. I would recommend always screwing bolts into threads to protect them when you blast. If I was watching this as a first time user the fast forward is useless. Paying attention to the synchro springs is critical. A lot people have these rebuilt and have problems. The shifter falls out while driving etc. There are many things that can go wrong and doing it over again means lifting that beast out again. Mention the correct alignment of the tail bushing. Not installing the rear seal upside down. Do a step by step without fast forward if you want to help people.

I've rebuilt a few of these for guys in the past those are some of the strongest four speeds ever made from factory, other manufacturers use those Chrysler transmissions for different vehicles just real strong units.I forget what year but they had some improvements and some different shifter pieces. I used to know the the differences between them and some tricks for putting them together but I think I'd have to start all over again it's been so long.

You can reduce weight by using an aluminum case. Two problems are 1) it requires a bushing to add strength around the input and 2) it is not recommended at all in high torque motors because the case helps keep the shafts and gears straight. I have a truck OD unit that came with aluminum and I still purchased/converted it to an iron case.

Did you install the little woodruff anti rotation key in the end of the counter shaft ? Those transmissions were heavy but would handle the power of a race hemi. The Borg Warner T-10 was a modified BW 3 speed & originally designed to work behind a Chevy 283. Today there are a lot of modern tough 5 & 6 speed trans available but in the 60s & 70s they were not available. I have seen many Pontiac & chevies scrap a trans on the track. The super T-10 & Muncies were a bit better. There were bellhousings available to put the 833 trans behind chevy engines. The Ford top loader was quite durable also.

If anyone cares, the cast iron case A833s were used in mid 60s cars up to the early 70s, it is a C body case (long tail shaft with a shifter location at the back is for B bodies, short tail shafts were A and E bodies) and it was not used behind a Hemi, the Hemis used 18 spline input shafts, this one is clearly a 23 spline input shaft.

Yes, the Dodge pickups used the same transmission but different gear ratios. 4th gear (or direct) is an overdrive ratio for the pickup truck transmissions but 1:1 for the passenger car tranny’s. Great way to lower the rpm if used in a passenger car application (as long as you don’t want to race).

Ive got an aluminum housing a833 right now on my garage floor. I do believe it's the overdrive version though that was available in the truck platform in the 80s. Still looks like too much work for my simple mind and I'm just gonna stick with my 2 speed slip and slide.

Yes those are heavy but very durable. Aluminum cases create as many problems as they fix. The countershaft holes in aluminum cases have a tendency to become egg shaped . I have the GM cast iron overdrive version of the 833 in my 37 chevy pickup.

Back in the day when the A833 was developed the 413 and 426 wedge shelled the Borg Warner T10 4 spds, the max wedges only had 2 options for transmission a 3spd Manual or the push button 3peed Torqueflite Automatic. The A833 ended that. Also not the T10 was taken a beating from Ford big block FE 390,406s and 427s until Ford developed the Top Loader.

You could buy a light weight case. I had one best transmission ever. All chevy guys used them.

I went through Muncie M-22’s like candy behind a big block. I WISH I had something as strong as the 833 back in the day

I would paint it cast coat so it stays looking like cast iron. Every one I have done I painted it that way.... been playing with Mopar for 38 years and I have never blown one up from street car to 1,000 horse drag car it can take what ever is thrown at it. Everyone brags about their muncie stone crusher trans and I have scrambled a few of them sent gears through the case...
