Astatic 45D Ceramic Phono Cartridge
1961
Astatic Corporation has been manufacturing ceramic phono cartridges since 1933. Primarily marketing to the juke-box and low-cost play-back systems not requiring pre-amplification.
The model 45D is one of a few ceramic cartridges designed for high quality audiophile systems with an extended frequency response and 1 gram tracking. The cartridge came supplied with a set of RIAA equalization adaptors for use with magnetic phono inputs. One controversial feature was the use of a radioactive element used to eliminate static electricity on the record surface.

I have to say, when I see the word 'ceramic' in connection to phono cartridges I break out in hives and assume the worst. This after having had many cheap ceramic and piezo carts in my youth. I had assumed that electromagnetic units were the only way to get the best from records, but the sound on this cartridge is just stunning.

Also tweeters: one or two of the piezo tweeters (Motorola etc) have amazing properties, very low distortion, very high frequency responses, most days I listen to a very sweet one.

@@G-ra-ha-m Ah yes, tweeters indeed. So many have a bad reputation, for good reason, but implemented correctly "solid state" transducers can be very good.

Thank you for sharing this information! While I knew of Astatic, I never knew of this model, let alone the radioactive foil for anti static removal.

That's very cool. The playback is amazing for a ceramic cartridge!

Fallout audiophile sh!t right here incredible that every period of time uses a lot a material that were banned in the following decades and this case made me think: which material we use now will be banned in the future?

In hifi terms,I should imagine beryllium,the current goto for tweeter material.I remember someone writing to a mag recommending the removal of the protective grill on sq grounds,only to be told by the editor to replace it straight away,due to the material being carcinogenic if disturbed!

Since it is ceramic how many hours can it last? Also, I feel bad for the poor guy that had to remove the radioactive foil from all those cartridges.

Crystal and ceramic cartridges playback response was only a loose approximation to the RIAA curve. It was good enough for portables, consoles and jukeboxes but perhaps not really up to audiophile standards.

@@CDJF1 YT's compression is subtle at the worst. Most people can't hear the difference at all. Most audiophiles (me included) can only hear the difference on high end equipment. In the early days of RU-vid, the compression was much worse, and anybody could hear it.
@VinylComeback

@@theclearsounds3911Exactly, RU-vid's "heavy" compression is very exaggerated. It's quite mild
