Hi Andrew! I got asthma a year ago and it did appear out of the blue, so ocasionally I found myself about to faint because I was walking or even trying to do some sport to the point of not being able to do any kind of effort. I got an appointment with my doctor and he just gave me a prescription with the typical medicine which I was not happy at all 'cause I was looking for answers, not the 'fastest way' to get rid of asthma. I felt useless since then... UNTIL I found you on YT! Andrew, I'm literally telling you that you've saved my life!!!!! Now I can walk, jog, play tennis, etc!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I never thought I could beat it. Thank you thank you and a million times thank you!

Wonderful video amigo! I finished with a cardio exercise and noticed myself wheezing afterwards, which made me search this up. Tried the exercise again only breathing through my nose this time and I didn't have any wheezing. I remember reading that the nose has a few things that make air you get through it higher quality, but forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me!

I've actually been doing exactly the same 2 things against my exercise induced asthma for a year (breathing through nose only and using double inhales) and I haven't noticed any symptoms since. although I did some sprinting to test it, I've been too scared to push my limits fully. but your video gives me the confidence to try it during my next cardio training

Lol, thank you. Nose breathing feels unnatural at first when racing, because you intake less air, but it's cleaner air due to being filtered by the nose, and keeping your lungs relaxed actually ends up improving absorption in your lungs.

cool video! the breath is so important, the fact we do it automatically should be a clue. love all information about the lungs, always love learning about them. also my asthma also went away from making it a habit to breathe deeply and slowly thru my nose! my asthma was starting to trigger for no reason late at night, and i’d have to grab my inhaler, and it became a cycle. but the nose breathing deeply changed that. so thanks for sharing this info, its so important !!

Pausing to do a few "full" breaths really helped me. It's counterintuitive, because when your lungs are tight you want to breather faster and more shallow, but when you slow down and fill/empty your lungs all the way it relaxes your whole body. Hope it works for you too! (:

10 years ago I got into running, not knowing I had exercise induced asthma. Through trial and error I found the exact same tricks you mention in your video worked for me. I literally just thought that was what running breathing was supposed to be like since it was the only way I was able to find success. I was a swimmer so completely different type of breath pattern. Now I’m just figuring out it was asthma all along. Very tricky now being out of shape and needing running to get back into shape. 😅

I went to a new doctor and she prescribed me Albuterol, even tho i told her that i havent had an asthma reaction or attack since 2006 (high school). Lowkey the doctor freaked me out, saying asthma hibernates and may come back. Made me anxious. So i did some RU-vid searching to see why i dont have symptoms and if anyome else did the same thing as me: whole foods that are minimal processed, no dairy, minimal gluten, running 5x a week for past 15 years, deep breathing exercises. Glad to see that youre doing the same and your video helps reaffirm that ive been doing it right. Even though there arent any direct research, it's been working well for us. I hope this comment and video helps others as well. For me, i havent used any inhalers or any meds since 2006. I exercise without problems. Fly on planes. Travel. All without issues. I hope thos comment can help others, even its just a little. Note im not a doctor, just reaffirming the video tips. Cheers.

An asthma can be dangerous, so it's understandable why a doctor might worry, but when you solve the root cause like you have, there's no more danger. Doctors only get one semester course in nutrition, which is why many of them don't know much about natural remedies.
@jaypeeh363
@jaypeeh363 6 месяцев назад
@@AndrewFolts 100%. I have a degree in public health and I always like to focus on prevention. If we tackle the root cause and it doesn't work, as least we tried. However, we both are successful at this and I'm sure there are others. I wish they did more research on this, it would help many! This new doctor caused me more anxiety yesterday than the whole 15 years since my last reaction lol. None of my doctors were concerned in the past, so that's why it freaked me out. After 30 mins of breath work and stretching, I am now more calm. For anyone reading this, I choose not to take the prescription, but that's because of my history so far. I don't recommend this, it is important to have an inhaler ready, but given my history, I am confident I'll be more than fine
@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 6 месяцев назад
@@jaypeeh363 Ha, know what you mean. Whenever I go to the doctor they try to get me on blood pressure meds, but it's just white coat anxiety. They sent me home with a 24 hour cuff once and my blood pressure was great. Makes me wonder how many people get misdiagnosed/mis-prescribed due to in-office stress.

The first video I clicked on completely answered my problems. I also noticed I was breathing faster and would try to slow my breathing through my nose. It felt like I was suffocating since I already started breathing heavily so I would switch to mouth breathing to get more air at once. And the nose hairs too, seriously, ran the day after I shaved and it was hell. Tldr: Start off runs, breathing through your nose and you will soon nose breathe through the entire run.
@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 9 месяцев назад
Yea, I know that feeling, I also felt a shortage of air in the beginning. But a lot of it was actually mental...like, I just "felt" that I was short of air due to breathing in a different rhythm, but in reality I ended up getting more oxygen if I stayed relaxed. Transitioning gradually is a great idea. Keep up the good work! (:

Fully agree with the nose breathing! Can generally run 5+ miles without issue as I'm breathing through my nose then started up Muay Thai again and kept having to take week long breaks due to getting bronchitis. Went to the doctor and was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma. I really think it affects me more in Muay Thai BECAUSE I'm not as strict with my breathing and mouth breath way more which equates to me just slamming my body with whatever pollutants/allergens are in the air.

Such a great video. I’ve had asthma my whole life, like you both exercise induced and also caused by allergens. I’ve avoided so many activities due to it. I’ve finally decided enough is enough and took my first swimming lesson today and I could barely catch my breath just from blowing bubbles under the water and kicking while holding the edge of the pool and putting my head under water while dunking my head a bit and blowing bubbles. Now my lungs hurt. I don’t want this to cause me to not accomplish my goal of learning to swim. Please, do you have any advice for swimming with asthma. I find that I need to leave air in my lungs to not sink or panic and breathe faster when swimming.
@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 5 месяцев назад
Yea, I'd recommend doing the song challenge like I did. Pick a song you like and practice it with fewer and fewer breaths. Like Week 1 you do it with say ten breaths, then Week 2 in nine breaths, etc. Quickly, your lung capacity will get stronger, and you won't be bothered by holding your breath. Also practice "full" breathing throughout the day, where you draw air in slowly until your lungs can't expand anymore, hold it for a couple seconds, then slowly release. This will also strengthen your lungs. Walking for 30-120 min per day is also good.

Interesting! Well, coffee has some good properties, so that could make sense. The problem is it's full of caffeine, which stresses out your body and causes you to expend more energy than you can generate (hence the crash). It's also highly acidic, which is damaging to your stomach. Might be worth trying dark chocolate, which has less caffeine, or even better, carob, which has none. Would be interesting to see if you got the same benefits from carob, as it has a similar profile without the acidity and caffeine.

I do Muay Thai now so I really want to improve my running cardio. I managed to run 12 minutes at a good pace, until I fought myself breathing faster to get more air and just getting anxious. I have an inhaler that I use sometimes when It gets cold, but other than that I haven’t used it in years and never when I’ve exercised. I want to be able to run longer and not have to use my inhaler before running. Is breathing only through the nose the way to do it. I always thought it was in through the nose, out through the mouth.
@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts Месяц назад
Yea, you should breathe both in and out through the nose only. The mouth is just an emergency airway and can cause the lungs to get irritated, because air passes too quickly through it unfiltered. Practicing deep/slow breathing will benefit both your lungs and your stress levels, both when exercising and just in daily life. I'd also look into eliminating dairy and gluten, because the majority of people are intolerant and they can cause inflammation/congestions. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YftK98fJWiA.html

I started to rollerblade and bike after years of not doing either, I did dance and some other things, but I noticed something I haven't had to deal with since high school and that I have EIB. I realized and got use to taking long breaths through my nose years ago, but for some reason I forgot that. While I was biking, I started to cough and spit stuff up. I thought this was because I became a smoker for a bit, and just thought that was natural getting out of shape, but I noticed while dancing I didn't have this, probably because I kept breathing how I use to breath during swimming and tennis back in high school. However, when I started biking a week ago and Rollerblading a couple months ago, it wasn't in my habit rhythm. I haven't used an inhaler since elementary school. I'm 30 now. I want to stay healthy and get back in shape so when my daughter is old enough I can ride bikes and skate with her. I'm an addictive person, I got into drugs 18-23, there are times I get into compulsive eating, I then will start gaming or sex, or just anything to stop my rapid cycling bipolar. I know I have several problems, but I really want to not turn to any vices anymore and just live a healthy non manic/depressive life. I'm not sure if vegan would help. As of right now I'm addicted to McDonalds, which I haven't had McDonalds for years, but I tried it last week, and I've had it every day since, just shows you how quickly I get addicted to things, I even get withdrawls from one day of not having it, it feels the same from when I came clean off drugs... I doubt you'll read this all and sorry for bad grammar, I'm actually a writer, but I'm just yeah. I just needed to vent, tired all all my flaws.

Hey Ruby, I know exactly what you mean, I get addicted to things lightning fast too. I had to replace my iPhone and iPad with little minimalist e ink devices, because I could never control my social media use. I've had my own problems with binging drugs, food, and work, etc, over the years, and at many points I was totally hopeless of ever restoring balance into my life. In 2020 I was at my lowest point, just completely fried mentally/emotionally and so I decided to work with this naturopath I found named Karen Pringle who did an "HTMA" (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis" on me, which shows a three-month window of your nutritional levels and toxicities, and basically I was like half-dead, ha! Blood tests always came back "normal," so it was such a relief to finally have proof that there was something wrong, and that I could do something about it. Karen got me into plant-based eating, deep breathing, long daily nature walks, and key supplements, like magnesium (relaxation), zinc (focus), and copper (creativity), and I'm like a totally different person now.. Just calm, happy, and productive with very little addictive behavior. Overall I learned that good food and nutrition are e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. When you're deficient or imbalanced nutritionally, it's literally impossible for you to function, no matter how "disciplined" you try to be. But when you start eating the right balance of foods and taking a few basic supplements, things start to turn around very quickly and you'll realize that things like bipolar are just your brain saying "HELP! I don't have the nutrition I need to work right!" Give an HTMA a try with Karen bit.ly/3MgKzBt or another practitioner if you find someone else you resonate with. You'll look back on the years of chaos like it was all a silly bad dream. (: -Andrew

I was a pretty decent runner before i got Allergy and Exercise induced asthma about two years ago.. Truly changed my life for the worse. I just bought the book and I'm going to give this raw vegan thing a try. After you bought the book, how long did it take for your symptoms to heal? And for you to go running again?
@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 7 месяцев назад
Asthma never fully stopped me from running completely, but it did prevent me from being able to run faster/longer. The effects of deep breathing were almost immediate. It was very uncomfortable the first run, because I felt like by breathing slower/deeper I wasn't getting enough oxygen, but by the end of the run I was already much more relaxed with little wheezing. After a week of practicing it consistently I had almost no EIA. Allergy induced asthma took a little longer (a couple months), because diet is more complex than breathing. For that the most important part is to remove dairy, gluten, processed junk food, and caffeine. Meat is generally ok as long as it's organic and not fed hormones, etc. Wild salmon is the best option. Alkaline fruits and veggies (papaya, mango, apple, watermelon, leafy greens, and avocado, etc) are a great place to start, because they'll help transport the gunk out of our body vs rice, wheat, dairy, etc, which fill you with thick mucus.

@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 11 месяцев назад
I used an inhaler, but haven't owned one for three years now. In terms of food, you'll want to eliminate all dairy, gluten, and processed junk food, and chicken (especially eggs). Then I'd eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies with some organic meat, if you want. There's no one food, but if you eat mostly fresh produce/meat, your nighttime asthma will improve drastically. You could also look into the possibility of mold and replace any synthetic bedding with natural fibers like linen.

@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 4 месяца назад
Yea, it's quite difficult to get certain nutrients on a fully vegan diet. I eat some salmon and organic grass-fed bison, especially in the winter, and it definitely helps. Throwing up after running can also be due to eating a meal too soon (less than four hours) beforehand or breathing through your mouth, which brings in toxins, unlike your nose, which is designed to filter air. Like you said it's very important to go outside at least 1-2 hours each day, both for Vitamin D and fresh air. Maitake and shitake mushrooms are a decent source in winter. Finally, you're also right that while an asthma inhaler can be useful in an emergency, it is not healthy and will only make your lungs weaker in the longterm.

I used to do that to, I'd get a roaring headache and puke after races, because I wasn't getting enough air. It's no fun. Firstly, avoid digestive stress, you want to avoiding eating a large meal at least 2-3 hours before running. Secondly, I'd completely remove dairy and gluten from your diet. Most people are intolerant and they can cause asthma symptoms. Thirdly, make sure to start out slow, so as not to shock your lungs, and focus on breathing in and out deeply/slowly through your nose (never your mouth). This prevents ragged/fast breathing, which can irritate your lungs and cause them to seize up. You can even hold the air in at the peak of your inhale for a couple seconds to help expand your lungs even further.

Deep/slow breathing will def help with that, but if you're having that much irritation constantly, then you almost certainly have some kind of food allergy going on. Most people are highly allergic to dairy and gluten, so cutting those two out for a week will probably improve your symptoms a lot. Also getting rid of junk food (processed sugar, chips, etc) can lower the overall level of inflammation in your body and calm down your immune system. @AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 5 месяцев назад
Most importantly you'll want to remove dairy and gluten from your diet, as they're the #1 and #2 causes of congestion/allergies. Also, both when swimming and just in regular life, practice "full," slow breathing to expand your lung capacity and strength. Asthma mostly comes from breathing too shallow and fast, which causing your airways to constrict. The inhaler will help in an emergency, but as a steroid, it will just makes your lungs weaker if used regularly.

@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 8 месяцев назад
Yea, I've had that tunnel vision type effect at the end of races too. Mostly likely your brain is not getting enough oxygen, because you're breathing too fast and shallow at the end of the race when you get tired. You have to fight that urge and keep your lungs relaxed by continuing to breath deeply and slowly. Remember, it's not just about how MUCH oxygen you intake, but how much is ABSORBED, and your lungs can't absorb if you're cycling air in and out too quickly.

I had asthma and allergies for 40+ years. Sometimes extremely chronic and caused bad insomnia at night. I knew dust affected me. Was hospitalized with bronch. pneumonia as a child. Eventually my primary care doc gave my Advair, Qvar, Albuterol etc.... Went to allergist and pomologist and did sleep study. The allergist told me I was allergic to dust mites. This helped me to some degree as I was able to mitigate the effects somewhat (mattress cover, Hepa Vacuum, Air purifier). I told the allergist that I thought certain foods contribute to my asthma (loved and ate a lot of "healthy cereals" such as granola, raisin brand, wheat brand, organic cereal). The allergist insisted that foods to not contribute to asthma and wanted to put me on prilosec. Luckily I knew better. Do not get stuck on an acid blocker long term. My sleep and asthma got worse and worse. The absolute game saver for me which probably saved my life was buying The Paleo Cure book by Chris Kresser, a functional doctor. I did an elimination diet (as described in the book) and cut out all processed foods, all grains, pasta, sugar, fake foods, all low fat foods, added health fats (olive oil, avacados etc.... Slowly re-introduced some foods. Fortunately, I always like healthy real foods, but I was just never fully educated about the bad foods. Eat only real foods that God put on earth, no food-like substances. God did not create a Dorito/Pringles Tree... Slowly and slowly I got better and within a year was off asthma meds. Changing my diet, adding probiotics and trying to control indoor toxins solved my asthma after 40+ years of suffering. I still carry an inhaler (as a binky), but use it less than 5 times a year (mostly preventatively if I am sick). I truly hope others can be helped by my experience as I wish I knew 40 + years ago what I know now. You can solve the problem by finding the root cause. Wishing you the best.💜

Hey Vyshnavi, really sorry to hear that. I've experienced a lot of anxiety over the years, as well. It may sound too basic, but the #1 remedy for anxiety is to simply bring yourself to a complete stop and focus on breathing in and out slowly and deeply through your nose until your heart and mind calm down. When you do this you lungs will unclench and it relieve the feeling of being "crushed" or "trapped." Avoiding caffeine and junk food is important too. I'd recommend checking out my Brain Fog video, which is full of tips that improve anxiety. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TT7huKIj0Cc.html

@AndrewFolts
@AndrewFolts 6 месяцев назад
@@Secondaccount-zo6kb Yes, an inhaler will help in an emergency, but it's a steroid, so if you use it on a regular basis, it will make your lungs weaker and weaker, which will actually worsen your asthma symptoms. The key is to practice deep, slow breathing in through the nose and make sure to remove congesting foods form your diet, like dairy, gluten, and processed snacks.

Because of asthma? Give "full breathing" a try. Before, during, and after working out, if your lungs feel tight/wheezy, pause to take a breath as deep as you can, hold it for a few seconds, then let it out slowly. Do this a few times, and your lungs should feel much more relaxed.

that's weird that your doctor only prescribed the albuterol inhaler. its a rescue inhaler, but if you're needing to use it that often, you should also be prescribed a preventative inhaler that you use twice a day. it took a few months for me to experience the full benefits of it, but now I hardly ever need to use my rescue inhaler, compared to when it was first prescribed.
@AndrewFolts

@@AndrewFolts I'm really glad you found what worked for you! Unfortunately I did breathing exercises for years and I didn't really help me consistently on a long term basis (I was in choir and musical theatre for years, so I have pretty good experience with diaphragmatic breathing and nose breathing) so that's why I ended up on a preventative inhaler. I still do the breathing exercises (that's actually why I got on youtube to find new ones to do and ended up on your video) and they do help to an extent and have probably prevented me from having a full blown asthma attack on a few occasions, but I just needed the inhaler to do more of the heavy lifting. in addition to the preventative inhaler, my rescue inhaler came with instructions from my pharmacist to only use it a certain amount of times per day, and to wait 6 hours in between using it to avoid building up a tolerance. I'm sorry you weren't informed of that its kind of messed up! it could've maybe helped avoid some uncomfortable side effects. I've also tried a variety of diets which hasn't helped me, but I had an allergy test done and it didn't show I was allergic to anything, so that's probably why. I was diagnosed with non-allergic asthma (and exercise induced) that's caused by environmental triggers that physically irritate my airways like dust, pollen, mold, cold air, smoke, or high humidity. they can be some of the same triggers as allergic asthma, but I guess the difference is its not caused by a histamine response? apparently its more rare than the allergic type and less is known about it. It's weird because I don't understand what would make my lungs react that way vs another person without asthma? My doctor wasn't able to give me much more of an explanation and I wish I could find out more. My only theory is I grew up on the south side of San Diego close to the navy shipyards, and apparently lots of children who grow up in that area develop asthma from the air pollution, so maybe exposure at a young age can cause lifelong sensitivities ? 😢 anyway, thanks for sharing what works for you, I'm always looking for other stuff to help with asthma to complement what I'm already doing. I've found some additional relief with wearing masks to block some particles in the air, using a hepa filter and a carbon filter at my house, yoga, and chiropractic adjustments.

@@heidihilts401 Yea, the immune system is so complicated, and there are millions of factors that can potentially trigger asthma. Have you tried eliminating dairy, gluten, and processed foods? Those were the big three that worked for me. Pollution definitely can be detrimental, though, so it would make sense if that was a big factor in your case. Glad you've found a lot of helpful strategies, though!

@@AndrewFolts yeah I have tried those diets and it didn’t make any changes for my asthma. Currently I’m vegan/ Whole Foods plant based. I try to avoid processed food and buy organic when possible. I’m not technically gluten free right now but most of the meals I make are gluten free anyway because I mostly eat oats, starchy veggies, and rice for my carbs instead of bread or pasta.

OMG HOW NOT TO DIE IS AWESOME. My mum was fighting cancer (she kicked it's ass) and her doctors were always saying "your levels of x are looking amazing! Better than expected" and I'm convinced it was greatly aided by the way she changed her eating. She ate mostly plant based foods and LOTS of broccoli and broccoli sprouts and other cruciferous. She would have green smoothies almost every morning, tried to treadmill 30-60min when she could, and ate whole foods. Perhaps MOST OF ALL, she avoided refined sugars! Plant sugars are okay, but refined sugars in milk chocolate and many desserts can reallly be like a cancer-booster. She did allow herself some though for fun, and so she tried to keep it under 15g of sugar a day. dark chocolate tends to have less refined sugars, so opt for that, but if you do, try to go for like Ghirardelli 72% or 86%. A lot of dark chocolates unfortunately have been found to have lead in them :/ do research what feels right to you! Good luck to anyone this might help!

What do you and maybe "the CAT DADDY" think? If I could somehow get him to join us on this conversation too...that would be so cool! ;-/) Time here is: 14:19
