In this video I'm imagining the Orion Nebula also known as M42 in the Messier catalogue, one of the most famous deep-sky objects to image, I'm also going over some of my guiding settings using the SkyWatcher GTi mount and the AsiAir.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate, to let me know in the comments below.

Hi Tadej, Thank you for continuing your RU-vid sessions. When you first started posting your RU-vid videos, it was watching your videos that I decided to get into Astrophotography, leaping from visual astronomy to Digital. I bought a SkyWatcher AZ-GTI for portability, a RedCat 51, and an ASIAir. Your videos inspired me with what you were capable of doing with your setup. Secondly, your explanations helped me set up my ASIAir with the AZ-GTI. I've watched all your videos that you''ve posted since you started uploading them on RU-vid. Although I've never posted any comments on any channel ever, this is my first comment and I'm making it to you. I've watched many other channels on astrophotography since then, but I've always come back to your channel looking forward to seeing what you've done next. I encourage you to continue your channel, as I see others like Astrobackyard, Cuiz, The Lazy Geek, Nebula Photos, Astoblender, Dylan O'Donnel etc., are doing well with their channels. I put You right up there with them. You have the technical knowledge and capabilities of growing your channel as well. I think I'm not the only one who believes this. Sometimes it's nice to know that you're making a difference, that your passion for this hobby is inspiring others out there. From an old guy in Canada - Thanks again for your inspiring videos. Clear Skies.

This video should have been uploaded more than a week ago, but unfortunately, I had some health issues so I wasn't able to finish it in time, I'll pay more attention to the comments to answer any of your questions so don't hesitate to leave them in the comments. Take care. ✌

Stunning picture Tadej, finally got my 1st shot of Orion this week. When the first frame comes in, it blows your mind. Look after yourself and don't worry about delays.

Hi Tadej. Thank you for putting this session on RU-vid and covering the guiding settings. Really useful and has helped me greatly in not worrying too much about the guiding. I also noted your calibration, RA and Dec settings which are really helpful. The dithering settings work well which I have applied and has made a big difference in reducing noise. I assume the RMS is due the the total payload on the AZGTI which I have set up similar to yourself. I also have a ZWO OAG which I will use for my next session. Great result with the Orion image and look forward to your next session. Good to have you back 👍

You may want to try and increase your guide speed for your mount to see if that helps improve your overall RMS error. I have found it help with backlash in my case.

I have about the same setup and I find that aligning 2 stars first & pressing sync mount sometimes helps even better than doing polar alignment. Sometimes I skip polar alignment and just aim to the North to start. I have different scopes and of course the lighter scope will do better with the AZ-GTI. Great video with excellent results. I love how the ASIAIR notates what you are looking at. How does ASIAIR work with Meridian Flip for you? Sometimes mine does not work. I often have to deal with trees which is why its difficult to polar align my mount. Do you ever use the Plan feature in ASIAIR? There are 3 different ways to shoot I have not explored yet.

Thanks for sharing Tadej. I have a couple of questions for you: 1) I see that you open up the skywatcher app first, is there a specific reisonderdelen for that? My experience is that once setup, you do not need to open it up each time or do you have a benefit to doing so? 2) I see slightly altered guiding settings than default in asi air, how did you come to these, did use use a specific source of information or was it trial and error? 3) Did you have different settings before using off-axis guiding? 4) I recently looked into the recommendations of Dr Robin Glover (video on astrofarsography channel) on optimal exposure times for your subexposures. In my setup under Bortle 5 skies and with a 544mm 80 apo flatfield + 294mc pro OSC going longer than +/- 20-30 sec apparently doesn't add much (when not using narrowband). I've tried different durations (60, 90, 120 180, 300 sec) and for now max 120 seems to give me sharper results). Have you done these calculations for your setup area and what are your thoughts on long exposure (especially using this mount). I am wondering if I wouldn't be better off with more shorter subs (with less chance of guiding errors happening). Greeting from NL and clear skies, Jos

Thanks for the questions Jos, ok so your first question, all the things you see in the video are done with the thought that someone new (who doesn't know the equipment) is watching the video, so in the case, they decide to buy any of the gear I'm using, they already get at least a hint of all the necessary steps on setting everything up. 2) I ended up with this setting after testing, I noticed that the GTi (at least in my case) doesn't have a constant performance, so despite I may have a really good polar alignment and the mount tracks with a 1-1,5' total error one night, the next, might be quite different in both directions so the guiding would be worse or better despite also having a good polar alignment etc, So these numbers give me the best guiding, in general, that's why I stick to them. I would also like to mention one more thing that's not really related to guiding but it ties in a bit in your tired question, I think I'm pushing the mount a bit over the edge, meaning that the max payload capacity is 5kg/11lsb and my current setup weights 6,2kg/13.5lbs (with the counterweight) so that's why my setting are a bit on the aggressive side and I think there are no fixed settings that you could apply that would guarantee you good guiding with this mount since it depended a lot on what you putt on it. I switched to an off-axis guider to save some weight and my correction pulses were even more aggressive before . I'll give a bit shorter answer to your last question since it's starting to look like an essay (and I'll expand on this in one of the future videos), I watched that presentation too and I think it was great, a lot of valuable information, but for me, I rather take my chances wit longer exposures because it gives me better results (besides the failed exposures), I even played around with lucky imaging a few times with my exposures being 0.5-1,5sec max and took about 600-800 images, the image was noticeable sharp but there was extensible less information/data in the combined image, 1 120sec exposure had much more data than 200 1sec exposures, so to summer up, I rather stick to longer exposures because I do get better results but I do sacrifice a bit of the sharpness. I hope this answers some of your questions but feel free to ask any additional questions. Clear skies to you too Jos.

@@TadejSkofic thanks for answering all the questions, very helpfull to learn from your experience for a fellow AZ-GTI user new to guiding (also with a bit too heavy setup). Greetings from NL

Excellent job as always . I have a question : you're using an off axis guider but in the setting for the guiding scope focal lenght it's mentioned 250 which is the half of the actual FL are you using a x0.5 reducer on the guiding camera ?
@TadejSkofic
@TadejSkofic 2 года назад
Thank you, yes you are right, I'm using a 0.5 reducer.

For a 2 axis mount, should sidereal be at 1 or 1/2? Thanks much.

Hello, on user manual ZWO ASIAIR it is said that camera ASI120 mc s does not support the as a guide, as decided by this question

Hey, have you had any issues with backlash or having to "tune" this unit for it to work properly? I have seen some videos where they basically had to take the whole unit apart to tune it to fix backlash? If that is the case, then I am NOT wasting my money on this!
