Astrud Gilberto wasn't "The Girl from Ipanema." When Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote the song, he was doing so about a pretty woman that he used to see in his Ipanema neighborhood in Rio de Janiero. Astrud is from the Bahia region of Brazil, and was married to Joao Gilberto, the Father of Bossa Nova.

I have always loved her voice but never really cared for bossa nova and the jazzy types of music she sings, with exception of a few famous tunes. She has a very relaxing voice in every language. 1st song I remember seeing her sing was La Banda , the Italian verion of a Brazilian or Portugese song, I think it came out in America as Everybody love a Parade? It was also played by my High School band shortly after it came out , it was an instant classic. It took us a month of practice every day to get the song down. I live a few miles away from location of the former Warwick Musical theater "Warwick Tent" as we called it. I didn't know she sang there...so many good stars came there in 60s till 1990's ..It closed years ago.

True! that she wasen´t the Girl From Ipanema... It happend that when the song was the first brasilian song to be on the top ten BilloBoard... No one in Brasil could singed in english so this GREAT woman could and there histrory comes that she is known as The Girl From Ipanema... never pretending to be the BEAUTY but just the GORGEOUS VOICE!... LOVE HER!
