Steve - I just wanted to thank you for posting this video, it was an absolute lifesaver. I bought an X200ma for my wife for Christmas and she'd asked me to set it up as dual-boot. I was really scratching my head when I realised I couldn't get it to boot from USB, and this video got me out of a real jam. Really appreciated it and wanted to let you know how much of a help it was.
Thank you so much, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I didn't have boot options on my X200CA. As someone else below said, the correct bios version for X200CA's is 208.
Thank you, thank you, for this extremely helpful video!! Using your instructions with my X200, I was able to update the bios and can now boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive. Really appreciate your thoroughness and detail.
GREATLY appreciate you posting this! My daughter's X200M crashed and would only come up in BIOS w/o recognizing the hard drive. Used your method to update BIOS from 302 to 506 so I could use bootable GRC Spinrite USB stick to perform surgery on the hard drive.
I do not speak much English, I'm from Venezuela but your Video xD saved my life. I was desperate, I thought I never boteearia my Asus, thank you very much for your effort uploading this video. PD: Everything was translated by Google Translate "If there is any inconsistency in the comment"
Hendrix Nwaokolo Wow. I have had a very hard day at work today testing over 130 students in my school. All kinds of difficulties and I'm very tired. Your comment really helped make my day much better. Glad I was able to help you.
thanks man, this totally helped us out! any idea what CSM stand for? Gotta love the lack of IT standards sometimes... LOL Thanks man, this even helped with a Rog G751JY that we had kicking around that is from around the same time as your video post.
Thanks so much for the advice yesterday. Last night I did a complete restore, but after that even windows cannot complete the restore and gave me the same os with files intact. Then I discovered the start ez flash on the bios, but after choosing uefi, “enter “ switch will not respond. So now even RU-vid’s response is like The US has elected a new president before the image appears, and then the blue screen of death appear. Too bad this laptop was highly recomended by Best Buy in LA. I should have chosen the Mcbook. Again thank you so much for entertaining a grandpa trying to be a geek. Regards
i tell you man asus..... i had the CA version i over ride the bios with M ver, and it worked just fine, the reason is that the old bios cant detect over 4gb usb . thank you for your help bud! A+
Thanks so much, I’m just waiting to start the laptop and will try a complete restore. Thanks again and more power to you.

is more easy: Esc to Boot, Enter Bios Setup 1. Disable Fast boot 2. Disable Secure boot control Save Changes reboot .. Esc. boot, Bios Setup and Boot, Launch CSM change to enabled and reboot. Esc and choose what you want boot. Thks.
Thanks. My ASUS R556LA came with bios version 503 but I couldn't figure out how to access the bios menu (tried F2, F8, F10, F12 like other machines) - never guessed it was the delete button - that's a new one! What I wanted was to boot from a Linux stick and I figured it out after watching part of your video, thanks!
Prof IT guy here, Asus is having problems lots of bios issues. Was trying to load an image and couldn't get it to boot to usb or cd or even to the hard drive that i had already imaged. Thanks for the video.
That absolutely solved my problem. It was heck actually getting to ASUS website, because it was 4 AM there and the site was down for maintenance. I just waited until the next morning, and problem solved!
I called Asus for an S500 and they would not tell me what to do to the BIOS to get notebook to bootup USB and they said I had to send it to them. Thanks so so much, I made those changes in the BIOS you said and BAM! installing beautiful Windows 7 OS love it!!! Thanks so much.
Luckily my asus x200m came with bios version 501. good to see they updated it. The bios is UEFI. so just Reboot while holding shift and you'll get a install from USB option. anyway, thanks for the video.
Thank you so much. My daughter has an Asus x200ma Atheros and the boot key is f2 for any of you who the del key isnt working. I wanted to replace Win8.1 with Linuxlite, everything is functional including touch screen.
Thanks, you almost saved my live, I need to boot my laptop with a Linux Live USB and I coudn't just because the BIOS wasn't updated. Thanks again and great video!!
Excellent work Stevebob1967, I struggled some time with the same problem. But now it works. Thanks, this was a real good contibution on RU-vid helping others, like me. Good job.
Thank you so much for this video. I'll update the BIOS. Anyway this ASUS X200MA can install Windows 8.1 64-bit only? How about 32-bt version? Because I didn't see 32-bit driver on the support website. Mine is comes with 2GB only and its very slow to runs 64-bit.
Hi there, thx to this I successfully reinstalled my bricked os. I was close to throwing the darn laptop out of the window because I can't boot to USB.,no any conventional bios lecture in my school taught me of this about uefi, not even a portable usb cd rom works, the screws can't be unscrewed from the buttom since the screws are losed and super tight alright so i cant move the harddrive to other pcs with usb boot to format it. In short almost no any other way to fix it but throw it. At one last minute, i found this, fucking hell, finally i saw my usb with Windows installer in the boot menu. Really man. Thanks alot. 👍👍👍
I'm having a rough week at work trying to get everything done before the kids come back. I was sitting down at the computer feeling sorry for myself looking at everything I have to get down and saw your post. Made my day. Glad I could be of some help!
man, you're a life saver! love everything about your video (especially cause it's so spontaneous lol).. it worked for me! I have a x200ma. Still having trouble to install linux, but at least now I can boot from usb! thanks to bios 500, and you \o/
Thanks man it helps me a lot. By the way my BIOS version is 208 and I did not upgrade my BIOS I only disabled my boot security and enable the CSM and after that I can now boot and install an Operating System from my flashdrive. it works now Thanks!
Hi Steve, I am Maurizio from Italy and I have seen you very interesting review. I own a X205TA (not X200) with the same problem of not having access to usb boot to update windows 10 cause the free space on the machine is to low so I need to do it through a usb key. What do you suggest I do to get a boot from a USB source? Thank you in advance, kind regards.
hey Steve , Im struggling with my new Asus x553m-bing...lets see if i can install Linux ..ill come back n post it here ..so far it just bypasses my usb stick; thanks for making this video. Though flashing the Bios makes me a lil jittery..never done that stuff .
You are best man brother God bless you ... every body please try also escape key on restart multiple time will also give you the all what ever you are looking for thanks every body specially Steve :)
I have a ASUS F200CA it looks extremely similar to this. My laptop is currently in a loop and keeps loading up the bios and I figure the only way to fix it is through this method. Do you think it'll work for my pc?
This is what I did to do that, and thanks to others in this forum and the ASUS forums for helping me bring it all together Have laptop powered OFF, and connect your USB bootable device to a USB 2 port on right side of laptop Power on system and immediately be pressing Escape to access Boot Menu, then Select BIOS Setup Under "Boot" tab, disable "Fast Boot" and under "Security" tab, disable "Secure Boot Control", save settings and reboot After screen goes black, be pressing Escape to access Boot Menu, Select BIOS Setup Under "Boot" tab, set "Launch CSM" to "Enabled" (Compatibility Support Manager, another name for Legacy Boot) Save settings and reboot After screen goes black, be pressing Escape to access Boot Menu Select USB device to boot from and press Enter
Great video! Unfortunately I don't get into bios at all, neither esc, F2, F8 nor del works. My notebook runs win8 and I want to replace it with linux. Do you have an idea why I don't get into bios although I tried different buttons after start as quick as possible?
I had a couple that wouldn't go into Bios at all. One even said it couldn't see that the battery was charging so wouldn't allow access. I had to send that unit back. The other one eventually went in. I had to start tapping the DEL key every 1/2 second repeatedly while turning it on. I even had to tap it pretty hard to get it to go in. Thought I was going to break it but it did eventually work.
ok Im back here letting everyone know that i just used linux off usb stick minutes after watching this video, my version is 205, i didnt have to flash the bios . though i have a different model x553m, but did all the other settings shown in the video . It worked for me
stevebob1967 can u help me Im struggling whit this error......bios not fully acpi compliant stop error every time i try to instal new system ?? does it need bios update or what ?
Alas the website you mentioned only has bios versions 208 or under from 2013. Nothing more modern, even though my bios is the same as yours. Seems Asus haven't updated their website!
hey thanks for the video .. i was trying to follow your steps but .. when i put usb with only bios on it .. the keyboard wont work .. and block .. and when i remove the usb .. the laptop back to normal .. i dont know what to do should i make the usb bootable for use it .. because i just put the bios file on it and use it .. please i need ur help
hi I just Justice subscribed to your channel. I have a question my Asus notebook is not booting up rite and it goes to bios could I do these steps to make my Asus notebook boot up again
+carlos cortes Well, if you are having trouble booting to an operating system, the problem could actually be the bootloader or other config files that start up your operating system. In the video I talk about upgrading the BIOS. That might help but first I would actually go to the save/exit screen and you have a couple of options like "load optimal settings" and "load default settings". I would try those before upgrading the BIOS. My reason for this is that if your operating system worked for a time, then stopped working, odds are the settings in your BIOS version were correct at some point. Play with the two settings I mentioned first. At least that's what I would try. Good Luck!
+carlos cortes Once you go into the BIOS. It should be the last tab. Once there, look down the list, select the one you want and make sure you SAVE then ext. If you do not save nothing will change. (I did that a couple of times myself)
Asus should be paying you for this. After upgrading to 8.1, the native recovery options were all disabled and I couldn't restore any backup images because they needed USB to run on boot. For the x200ca the bios that works is 208. We have dozens of these machines and once in a while we need to wipe them clean, this saved us a lot of aggravation.
I tried everything you suggested and I upgraded my Bios but still it won't boot. I will try making a new bootable usb, maybe that's the problem. Are their any tools you recommend for making bootable usb's for installing linux (Zorin)?? Maybe I'm doing this all wrong? Thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for the video. The first q serves me. I need install W8 in a new HDD; I can do thats you do in the video, but them fail and tell me: "ERROR: NFTS Partition could not mounted. (14) Not FOund" Can be a problem when i use Ruffus? Thanks for your time (Sorry by mi english)
Friend also replace it with a SSD. But when you turn on the black screen and flashing the dash before inertia Windows. And on the other hd shows the configuration of BIOS, Windows boot manager. In ssd does not show it. You have a solution?
A little off topic (regarding imaging): If you have 149 of these to image, why don't you have a bench machine with at least 4 extra SATA connections where you can take out the hard drives and image from a desktop (imaged stored on internal HDD or SSD) to multiple drives? Doing one at a time takes a lot of time. Just a thought. Is there a reason why you do them individually?
Armorlight Technology Services, LLC Sorry, just saw this message. When the units came in I was under the gun and had to start imaging right away. When My ping program didn't work the @#$% hit the fan and this was my most readily available option. I'm actually doing another new set of 50 and I am setting up something very similier to what you are saying. (actually exactly what you are saying. I'm wiring them into my instructor machine on my desk.)
stevebob1967 No problem. And yes, it does take some initial setup time to get the image ready so that makes sense. Thanks for this post by the way, it was very helpful!
thank you thank you a lot i spent 3 hours struggling then found ur vid i updated the bios with 502 and worked for me these new things are a pain in the ass
hello, I bought a used unit like the asus x200 from someone on ebay. the unit works while plugged in, but not on battery power. the bios requires a password so I cannot do the upgrade. what do you suggest? I don't find anything online about a bios password reset. thanks, Greg
+Greg Zegan Ouch! I'd contact the seller on Ebay. It is their responsibility to give you an operational unit. You don't want to try to crack the case open. There are many plastic hooks inside that are a real pain in the ass to get off and almost impossible to get back together again. I have found most BIOS passwords irrelevant unless you are in a questionable user situation. Almost all of the time it effects the technician in the end.
Sir, I’m just trying to change the boot options before I reset windows 10 thinking that it would change the “bios”.. after that I couldn’t even enter the boot section of the bios, csm is. Disabled, boot option 1. Windows boot manage... and 2 is UEFI: Matshitadvd-R. Any suggestions is appreciated.
OK, not sure why you can't modify the boot choices in BIOS. I would first try to restore the default settings in the BIOS. Those are usually on the last page of the BIOS settings. After that my first thought would be that Windows is most definitely corrupted. Seems like your boot sector is messed up and initially fails before being forced without any other options to boot. If you can somehow get into windows I would try to go into setup and restore the computer to an earlier version or even a factory restore might be the only chance.
Edii Dunno On the ASUS support page you type in the model number. In my case it is the x200ma. This is the page it comes to as of 8 /8/15. Specific for x200 series. www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K200MA/HelpDesk_download/ click on the BIOS link and they should show up.
ishystyle97 Not sure. The BIOS version is different. I would go with the highest version that has been out over a couple of months to weed out any bugs. version 208 looks good.
Have you ever come across upon startup you get a black screen with a blue box in the middle that says enter password. I tried f2, nothing. It wont boot at all, this is the first time I have ever seen this. Is there a generic admin password that I can use to get this thing to boot? My wife bought it at a yard sale, the previous owner is recently deceased, so asking the previous owner is out of the question. I am not super brilliant with computers, but I do know some. So if you could please keep it as simple as possible. Thank you in advance for your help. It is an ASUS X200CA.
+Robert Hoage Actually, I ran into this problem about a month ago. A student tried booting the machine and it must have gone strait into the BIOS screen. Once in he inadvertently changed the administrator password. Turns out the Hard drive was bad on the unit and I replaced it. That is why it went strait to the blue box asking for the password. It couldn't start up with a damaged hard drive. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't figure out the password even after replacing the hard drive. In the old days you could take out the BIOS battery and force the BIOS to reset, allowing you to configure stuff like the boot order and such. The new machines hard code the passwords into the mother boards so you can't do it. (I Tried). I ended up calling ASUS when I heard others were having trouble and was told they can send a code to unlock thew BIOS. Well, for me, the unit was out of warranty and ASUS wanted me to ship it back to them at cost and the pay for a tech to enter the code. About $60 to do the whole thing. I ended up replacing the mother board from another unit with a broken case. The unit is probably still worth $60. I would recommend calling ASUS and send it in.
Hey guy. i 've just buy the e200ha ASUS . it is seem to be similar with ur laptop. but one have installed win 10 64 BIT on it. it make my e200ha so lag. SO and i want to install win 8 32bit by usb boot. but when i go to BIOS. i can't see CMS or LEGECY BIOS to boost from USB. when i saw ur video i cant do it because i cant hear alot of English. and the video so BLUR , :( HELP me plz tell me the way to enble CMS or LEGECY BIOS options
Hello everybody, To install windows 10 or Windows 8 you need the 32 Bits version and use Rufus (search on google) create a bootable usb as GPT/UEFI and choose FAT 32 then deactivate secure boot and you can install windows.
Nice video. But did not work for my ASUS X200M. I have an ASUS X550CA and X200M (touch screen). For some reason the "delete" key option works for the X550CA, but not for the X200M. Sometimes with WIndows 8/8.1 and ASUS laptops boot "too fast" and the only way I can get to the USB boot option (or even settings) is doing the following. From the sign-on screen, holding down the SHIFT key, then (on the screen) select the POWER button, then "RESTART". This will reboot to the Windows 8/81 "Choose an Option" screen, and from there I can boot USB, or go further in the process, and use the "Troubleshoot" option to get into the laptop UEFI settings. For the most part I like the ASUS laptops, but their tech support is pretty much non-existent -- but that's another issue.
Asus's support site is no longer set up like this and I can't find the BIOS updates anywhere on there. Could you possibly help a brother out on this one?
if you go to support.asus.com it will bring you to the support page where you can enter the product model. If you enter "x200ma" it will take you to the correct model support page. Click on "drivers and tools" next to the FAQ button. Next click the OS button for windows 8 and then click on the "+" next to the BIOS in the list below. I would select the most recent BIOS which today was 506.
My. Asus model is KB 5003837 OS is windows 21H1, system Bios mode UEFI. My problem is the BiOS, it’s unmoveable and I’ve been working for a week trying to adjust the bios and like heaven sent I saw your video. Any suggestions, before I venture to be catastrophic geek again would be very much appreciated. Domo aregato guzaimadu.
greetings, I have an Asus EeeBook X205TA and has exactly the same problem, and even updating the bios, the problem remains, I wonder if there is any solution already specifies that the BIOS is only in v.212, so I can not do nothing. Should there be a solution, I thank in advance
+Ricardo Almeida (ヒカルド・アルメイダ) Sorry. All I can say is that the BIOS should be running at the latest version which is above 500 for the x200ma or at least a bios date above Jan 2014 for other versions.
To get to the bios I had to select restart from within windows, then when the screen went black I pressed fn + f2 keys and held them down until bios loaded.
