This series is amazing and still relevant. I just bought an AS6508T and the series has been a significant help. One thing during setup, start the ACC once the LED screen mentions 'Initialize Unit'. Note that it might take a while for ACC to find your Asustor, took 10 minutes on my home network before ACC found it. Also, in Windows 11, you might have to manually allow ACC to go through the Firewall. I had too. If ACC can't connect to your Asustor, use a web browser to access the installation.
YOU ARE EPIC!!! I was in Japan and fought with this thing for hours. You got me there in 30 minutes. Absolutely awesome and can't wait to view the other videos!!!
Regarding Static vs Dynamic IP; I would suggest simply leaving the NAS as dynamic and then on the DHCP server, simply reserve that address permanently for the NAS. That way, as long as the DHCP server remains, the address will act like a static IP and if you replace your DHCP server, you simply let a new Dynamic be assigned and reserve the new address for the NAS.
I'm going to be quite irate, however, if my new drives are not here about the same time! (I have ordered a pair of 4 TB NVMEs, and a pair of 14 TB Ironwolf Pro drives...; with any luck, but the time I need to expand storage or add new drives, the 14 TB drives should be $150 in 3-4 years time! Or maybe the 20 TB units will be the new sweet spot...!)
For security reasons never use your admin account to map network drive. If you do so and you computer is hacked by a ransomware, all you nas files will be encrypted and LOST. Use a secondary standard USER account (read only permission) to map the share to a windows Net drive.
I agree, I use the admin account for these videos in order to ensure no unexpected barriers in the recordings, but you are right. I should highlight this more often.
@@navin4479 Uh yeah, this ^^^... Noob here...Same question... The process of mapping a drive is independant from a user access? so if my pc is hacked then whoever is accessing my mapped drives can only R, not RW, but I can still RW by accessing the already mapped drive with my admin account which is RW?

Thanks a lot for this video, and certainly for the entire serie of it! I look forward to have the time to watch them and learn how to use properly my little NAS ^^
And *now* you've made me spend another $1200 total (with shipping/import taxes, etc) on 6 each 10 TB WD Red Plus drives....; the 40 TB usable RAID 6 (w/6 ea 10 TB drives) will fill the bays of Asustor 6706T; hope to not need to mess with it for years!
Looking forward to this series mainly to see if I need to do anything different with my setup. I love my Asustor Nimbustor 4 with the only disappointment being the Asustor photos software does not have AI to allow me to sort photos on things like facial recognition as does Synology and QNAP. On a personal note, thank you for your assistance and answering my NAS questions on your help forum.
so yeah of course i didnt get the exact same thing as you guys did. story of my life. the cord i got with my NAS only connects to the USB port in the router.
Thanks for the donation buddy! Apologies for the slightly slow reply on this, just got back from Computex and catching up. Thank you for taking the extra step to donate and support us (me and Eddie) for the videos and articles that we make. It is genuinely ENORMOUSLY appreciated and I am always constantly humbled by it. Keep being awesome and have a fantastic weekend Dara!
Hi bud! Quick Message. Can you fire me an email on robbie (@) nascompares (dot com), it’s regarding bit of fun content I am working on for the channel and I am inviting those that donated to the channel or regular supporters/commentors along. Can really fire it here in the comments. Cheers in advance and look forward to hearing from you! p.s. Reading this message back, it sounds REALLY SPAMMY! Sorry for the cryptic nonsense and believe me, this is legit...I hate seagulls… I pronounce Router right/wrong….. quid… knicker…. Etc. I hope this convinces you I am me! *triggers existential crisis*
I tested an ASUSTOR 8-bay unit recently, then returned it when I discovered that the firmware was dangerously awful. The Model AS6508T is prone to failure, and attaches to the network LAST in the boot process! So remote administration software can only communicate with it when everything has gone perfectly. How lucky do you feel?
Terramaster is going to release their all new TOS 5, new PC client, new mobile app, and more other backup and data sync applications. Would you make a review about them then?
Went through the auto setup of a flashstor. Saying all drives are green instead of drive 1 mot being included as in the video. Also “Create” in Volume is greyed out. Wondering if a mistake was made in the setup.
FYI, for anyone who's curious. I have a Nimbustor 4 and I started with two drives, before expanding to three (in RAID 5) and now four. I don't remember how much noise it made when it was only two. However, with three drives it was very noisy and seemed to be constantly accessing. A short time ago, I added another 4GB of RAM and the fourth drive and now it's quieter than I can ever remember it being. I suspect two and four are the sweet spots. I have no idea how this would work if one or more was an SSD.
@@AOJOPhotography I have no idea how it works. It just changes the RAID striping from three drives to four. In my case it took about 40 hours to complete.
@@AOJOPhotography If you are planning to do this you should have all your data backed up on another storage system for ‘just in case’… I didn’t need it though.
Thanks for your detailed video. But I wonder if others have the same problem as I have. first of all if I try to install the latest ACC it says "unsupported protocol. Only HTTP and FTP protocols are supported" I got around that by clicking the download button underneath that tes and not on the right side. Means it downloaded an older version. But when I open the ACC it reconizes my NAS but i can do nothing there. It doesn't look like your ACC. On the bottom when I try to enter it sends me to a link on their website where is says I need to register. But there is no link to register. Only on the online support site there it says "reister" but again itdoesn't me a link to register! Fazit: I never seen such a USER unfriendly NAS system..I am thinking about to give it back and go for another brand. Terrible experience
I have a brand new AS3302T with 2x 6TB Seagate Iron Wolf HDD's and cannot initialize it as Raid 1. When choosing 1-click set up I have only the option "maximum capacity" resulting in a Raid single configuration. When choosing custom set up I can only choose the single option (JBOD, Raid 0 and Raid 1 are simply not selectable). Also, after set up as Raid single I cannot change it into Raid 1 via management option. Why is it impossible to set up my NAS as Raid 1? Are there any requirements related to the HDD's (formatting?), or to Windows 10 or BIOS?
Wish I would've known this video exited before setting up. I'm in a hamster-wheel-of-death with the whole ID thing. Would resetting the device to factory defaults be recommended? So I went ahead and did the reset, and for the second time my browser locks up on the registration page @17:40 (eternal "LOADING"). In the event anyone actually reads this and knows what to do, your help would be appreciated since I can't find help at the Asustor website.
When installing control centre, half way through installing it on win 11 it says i need to restart to continue the install, i restart and then starts install again, then tells me to restart etc.. what can i do?
On the same network and could not find. I'm fearing that I have to return this. This product is adding up to a 1 STAR product for actually existing with no documentation and does not connect. Finally connected with the IP on the screen and it wants me to log in and I have no username or password. Thumbs down all around
