I have always respected your balance between practicality and ultralight, and these gear videos just reinforce it. I have really liked seeing these more in-depth break downs for your thought process behind what you bring. A lot of people will give you a sales pitch on the latest greatest trinket, I like that you’re just giving an honest talk through of your gear. Thanks for sharing!

Regarding cracked fingers...I find that using superglue on the wounds really helps keep dirt and grime out of the cuts, and really helps the healing process, too.
@Hope8x28
@Hope8x28 2 года назад
Yes! We use superglue for every cut that doesn't require stitches. It was recommended to me nearly 20 years ago by a physician friend. It works like a charm.

Weird tiny tip... those compressed towels rehydrate well in a water bottle cap! Instead of carefully pouring water on the towel, fill a bottle cap and drop one in. You'll probably need to add a bit more water once it expands and you stretch it out, but it's easier once the towel is opened up.
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
I tried this last night! I had no clue the caps were big enough to hold one. Worked great! I did almost overflow the cap but that's just my clumsiness. Thanks for the tip!

Aquafor is one of my favorites to carry in my first aid kit. I've even used it as chapstick. :-) My solution for the wet wipes is that I take an entire pack of baby wipes (I need to use the scent and alcohol free ones because I have weird allergies) and I remove them from their packaging, lay them out on a baking sheet until they are completely dry, then pack them. The weight is next to nothing once they are dried out. I just add water and a dab of Ivory soap (I carry about an inch sized chunk of that) when I clean up at night. I try to let them dry out after I use them to wash up so they are lighter to pack out. I also have some in my poop kit. I agree 100% on the avoidance of chaffing!

Awesome video. I am just the other side of 50 and relate to the need for the magnifying glass for reading small print. Your flight was today and I am so excited for you to start this adventure! Good luck!

Hey Jay, I have prescibed meds as well, so I thought I would share what I do. I bought small plastic bags at hobby lobby. I take the medicine information from the bottle and put it on the plastic bag and put clear packing tap over it. I then pour the medicine into the bag. I do all my meds this way then put it in a quart freezer bag. Just an idea.

Love the concept of squeezing 1/2 gram from Neosporin tube and cutting plastic attachments from my tent and bag to shed weight then packing out an 18 inch sub and two 16 Oz beers from town. - Just a reminder carry what you want. Sure less gear you can hike more but quality of life on trail is most important.

You haven't described any items yet, but I have already told myself that if you take soap, that can win my subscription, but I think it likely that you will gain my sub on basis of your content (but seriously soap is understated, and hand sanitizer doesn't cut it).

You have a different phone than I. iPhone has a magnifying lens with a slider and you can get scary large magnifications with it. Your phone might have that as an option. Pretty funny, every time you say, "Everybody already know what that is", I have to look it up :). Swiss Army tweezers get lost, and don't grip/hold well, and the scissor spring weakens making the scissors hard to use with every spreading of the scissors. There is a guy that makes a water squirt plug that goes into the water bottle and you tip it upside down and give you rump a blast like a bidet. it is light weight. maybe use less paper with and early squirt . Thank you

They Can further damage your kidneys. In addition, interfere with your antihypertensive medications. Of course always consult your nephrologist on all your medications. Happy hiking!!

Great video and you’re exactly right that most of the items in this video are of personal choice and learned through experience. One thing I did because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to bring a sharpie on my PCT thru hike was go buy a mini sharpie, they have the same writing tip size but half the length of not shorter. Looking forward to watching your hike brotha!

Another great, informative video. I'll have to check out those space pens! And oh my gosh, I pack out my dirty toilet paper too! I just bring a separate paper lunch bag, inside a zip lock, and put my dirty toilet paper in there to pack out. Because, I mean, who likes seeing toilet paper scattered all over the place out there? And, as you mention, it's all part of LNT. I love that you brought this topic up! Also, my first time wearing earplugs, ever, was when I thru hiked the AT. Some of those hostels and shelters, oh boy!! Cheers!

31:29 If I was you I might consider getting one of those Aluminum Wallet Credit Card Holders. The ones that snap closed. They are designed for RFID Blocking, but they are also water resistant and virtually indestructible. It might weigh a bit more than that z-packs, but they are still pretty light. And as an added bonus, you won't have to worry about your credit card getting hacked. 😎👍
